  1. As a lad I loved pictures of the schooner Yankee. I used to day dream of sailing the world on it. It was a sad day it was wrecked on a reef.
  2. Dilbert is the Man. Long live Dilbert.
  3. When money has become more important than people, that society IMO is doomed to the fate of all failed societies- the Babylonians, the Romans, etc.
  4. Of course. Farangs come below the soi dog in importance, except as an ATM, IMO. Family ( parents ) children family ( siblings ) boyfriend/ unknown husband friends monks educated Thais ( teachers, doctors etc ) official Thais all other Thais other Asians soi dogs farangs
  5. My wife was racist, superstitious, an alcoholic, a prolific liar, prone to anger over not much and astoundingly untidy. I knew little of that before getting married, despite living with her a year. She was consummate at hiding the problems till after we got married. Even after I found out there was no point in trying to discuss any of it as she refused to talk about it. In the end though, none of that was the reason we got divorced. PS. Despite all that above she was a great partner till she wasn't. Always worked hard, great cook and the other as well.
  6. I doubt if many give a rat's bottom about the problems you reference. I worked in Saudi for years and they are just as bad, but rarely a whisper from the oil consuming nations of the world. The only reason, IMO, that Qatar is getting it is because of the publicity due to the world cup.
  7. Perhaps, like Dr Strangelove, they just can't help themselves.
  8. When my wife to be didn't require any sort of party I thought I'd found a good 'un. She did get a thousand or so out of me for the professional photos done in front of different scenes while wearing costumes, but other than the legal documentation that was all I paid. I did give sinsod for show, but got all that back. PS. Ring not necessary. Not part of the legal marriage. That's a farang thing.
  9. They will certainly "bless" the union if you wish it ( in return for some "gifts" ), but that gives no legality to the marriage.
  10. Consider yourself lucky that you don't have to go through the "to pay or not pay sinsod" discussion on the forum.
  11. If my wife to be had told me I'd have to pay for a giant party for her and her friends/ family I'd have said goodbye right then. Had she paid for it that'd be her business.
  12. As I pointed out in my previous reply you have as many options as you want. Sky's the limit. Do anything you like. Only bit you have to do is turn up at amphur with the required bits of paper, sign the paper pay 20 baht or whatever it is now, get the paper, leave. Of course depending on the office you may require witnesses of your own, translators etc. The office will tell you what you need. I fortunately did not require to bring anyone else as the office staff did all that- they even took a photo with my camera. We didn't have any sort of party after as she had no family nearby. Soooo, have a gigantic party with monks and elephants or just a few friends over. It is, up to you.
  13. As the "service/ party" etc is nothing to do with being "married", you can do whatever you like. The getting married happens at the amphur office, not by monks ( unless a not legal village wedding ) or any religious/ non religious entity. Why don't you let her decide what she wants for her ceremony. That will take care of the "acceptable to Thai people". but your reply indicates there is no good advice on marrige matters on this forum (so why is there a section on it?). It's more about the divorce side than the getting married side, but there are no rules ( apart from the amphur legal bit ) so anything goes. It's not even necessary to have anything at all. It is indeed, up to you ( and her ).
  14. How did a fun thread on the Pub about superyachts morph into yet another evil Russia/ Ukrainian war rant thread?
  15. What else would he say? They should have known all that before awarding the games to Qatar. I've seen a bit about it on Al Jazeera and they must have spent a phenomenal amount of money on it, but one wonders what they are going to do with all those sports stadiums afterwards.
  16. Don't anticipate too much. Donations of millions of quid to a certain country has to be paid for, among other massive payments ( to rescue the NHS perhaps ), and it may be decided that giving rises to those not living in the UK is no longer sustainable. Brits living abroad are an easy target.
  17. Absolutely. Ban the pacs and all money donated must be visible to scrutiny. A limit on campaign finance would be in order too, as minor parties can't match the big parties.
  18. I also support ( and have said so on this forum ) an absolute ban on lobbyists or politicians getting jobs on companies that benefitted during their time in congress.
  19. Link? The only thing I could find was a reference to her being a friend of Hillary Clinton.
  20. I suspect she got that much time ( wonder how much of it she will serve in jail ) because she ripped off self important people, rather than the poor masses.
  21. but it is yourself that posted the post to which I replied. Seems like a discussion to me.
  22. Doesn't matter if it doesn't make him rich. If advertisers stay away it won't make money.
  23. Call me a fool then. Remember bent bananas?
