Price of electricity from January-April to rise
Bangkok Barry replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
This month was the first month I ever paid more than 4bht/unit. So you're clearly wrong! This is from a source we are not allowed to name. So I'm clearly right. The price was reduced and now it is planned to increase it again. Article dated October 2023. -
Price of electricity from January-April to rise
Bangkok Barry replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Inflation figures anywhere are nonsense, because only some things are included in the calculations. Something that has increased by 1% might be included but something else that might have increased by 30% isn't included in the 'basket' used to calculate the figures. I'm sure we've all seen certain foods increase by a massive amount, up to 100% in some cases, but they often don't count when inflation is calculated. -

Actually, it will and it won't. The price was lowered recently and they are simply returning it to what it was before. -

Shouldn't this re-printed press release be classed as a commercial rather than a news item? -

Try another country, where you are more welcome to spend your time and money. -
What sets this case apart is the gender dynamic, with a female teacher accused of the offences. Other than that, just another case of a teacher abusing a student, whether physically or sexually. And just part of the culture, in that we read of such cases over and over again. Meanwhile, the school responded with - what. By saying nothing at all, it would seem. Also normal. The only surprise is that there is no claim of the school trying to buy the parents' silence.

Immigration queues Jomtien
Bangkok Barry replied to twozeds's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
It's Kalasin, and its relevance is that, by comparison, I'm lucky not to have to attend those offices which are overcrowded and need an appointment. As for your second question, no they can't as they must attend their local office. I hope that is clear for you now. -
Drunk police chief insults foreign man at restaurant in Isaan
Bangkok Barry replied to webfact's topic in Isaan News
You do know this is a forum about Thailand, don't you. As far as I've read, no-one has said this only happens in Thailand. -
Drunk police chief insults foreign man at restaurant in Isaan

A policeman abusing and insulting someone because he isn't Thai. Makes you feel safe and welcome, doesn't it. There is so much nastiness and violence just below the surface in the Land of Smiles.- 105 replies

Immigration queues Jomtien
Bangkok Barry replied to twozeds's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I love that at my local immigration office there are rarely any queues. The most I've seen there is about 10 people, and when I went to do my 90 day last week there was no-one waiting at all. -
Thai-Chinese Meeting Addresses Negative Film Impact on Tourism
Bangkok Barry replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
This is a movie they're talking about, isn't it? A drama, not real life. Don't the Chinese know the difference? I guess the same mentality exists there as existed in my native UK when I was a kid, and maybe still does, where people would want to know where to send flowers when a soap actor died. -
Thailand ranks bottom of the pile with ASEAN English score
Bangkok Barry replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I know a now retired school secretary in Sydney, who told me of two Thai brothers who failed their exams there. Expecting the Thai-style automatic pass, they demanded that they be given a pass, otherwise their father would remove them from the school and that school would lose the tuition fees. The school told them 'goodbye'. -

I've always remembered that when I was a kid I asked a teacher if the 'tubes' you can see alongside the London Underground tracks include telephone wires. She said she didn't know but she would find out. And she did, and they do. Can you imagine a Thai teacher saying they don't know something?! -

Has it occurred to you that many people do not have the aptitude to learn a foreign language, in the same way that not everyone can has the ability yo learn math or science - or English. It isn't as simple as saying 'you should'. -

There is nothing to back it up; it's just that some are obsessed with sex! Anyone would think teachers shouldn't have sex! That isn't what you said. You stated that native English teachers in Thailand are mostly sex tourists, not that teachers should have sex the same as anyone else. And I asked you if you have anything to back that up, apart from it being your personal opinion rather simply stating it as a fact. It is your opinion, nothing more, but you stated that the teachers ARE mostly sex tourists. -

Anything to back that up? Or did you forget to preface your post with 'In my opinion' rather that stating it as a fact? -

I hope you're joking. English is a universal language. Thai is spoken almost exclusively in one country. Those in the UK and US (and other countries where English is the main language) can opt to learn another language if they want to, but they don't need to. Thais really, really need to learn something other than Thai if they want to exist outside of their little bubble. -

I fully agree with you. I've long thought it's kind of funny that those who speak the best English are Thailand's 'entertainers'. At the same time, I think there are a considerable number of 'hidden' English speakers. They just don't use it. I've experienced it with health personnel (although also many don't speak a word of English), and in one case someone in the area I lived in Bangkok who assisted me when his dog ran out and bit me, taking me to a clinic and paying the bill - the only time in my 26 or so years here that I've seen a Thai take responsibility for anything. Others are perhaps too shy to use what they know.
