Thailand’s digital wallet project: Green light to make cash splash
sirineou replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
That's not how this works, The below is a over simplified explanation. Two terms that come into play are "Propensity to spend" and the multiplier effect. Propensity to spend is the percentage of this amount that is spend on the average. In Thailand I am sure is is close to 100% The multiplier effect : is how many times that 10,000 baht will circulate in the economy . So I spend 10.000bht buying shiny beads, Now the shiny bead store owner has 10.000 with which to buy beer, the beer store owner has 10.000 to buy som tam and so on and so on. at each transaction (or most of then) a 7% tax is collected. After about 15 cycles the goverment has recouped the 10,000 and more , and the economy is stimulated. That's the theory. Of course there are some problems. The stimulus could be saved and not spend at all, or it could be spend outside the country.- 83 replies

House makes history, removes McCarthy as Speaker
sirineou replied to Social Media's topic in World News
That might be good if it was true. The Republicans support deregulation when it comes to bussiness, lower taxes , which again helps those with the most to tax. And gun control. They say there is a need to get big goverment out of the way. but they have no problem getting in the way of, reproductive rights. Immigration issues, same sex marriage, religion, sex education, recreational drug use. etc.- 52 replies

Statistics have a way of skewing reality. remove from statistics those parts you do nor engage in and for you, the picture is entirely different. For instance "Thailand has a very high motor vehicle accident fatality rate " But Thailand has more motorbike than any other part of the world. and most of the motor vehicle accident fatalities , and serious hospitalizations are of motorbike riders. So, if you do not often ride on motorbikes.........

Recent changes in the Golden visa program, and foreigner taxation in Portugal make it a more difficult place to move to. "Portugal to scrap ‘unjust’ tax breaks for foreign residents " https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/03/portugal-to-scrap-unjust-tax-breaks-for-foreign-residents "Portugal to Apply New Golden Visa Changes Soon, Following President’s Approval " https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/portugal-to-apply-new-golden-visa-changes-soon-following-presidents-approval/#google_vignette

More details on Thai taxation of overseas income
sirineou replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Unless there is a treaty of such country with Thailand that requires that such income is only taxed in the source country then since no tax has been paid in said country , there would be no credit, and such the full tax liability would be due, But Thailand as many other countries have done, to attract foreign investment might make provisions that such income is taxed at a different rate than domestic income, For instance , in Greece (my plan b country) the rate is 7%. So let's see how this thing plays out. -
The middle income trap is hard to overcome. But kudos for trying . The trap is that departing the middle income range makes wages too high to compete with low income countries , but does not have yet sufficient innovation and highly skilled personnel to compete effectively with upper tier economies. So aside from economic policies to raise wages, he also need to institute policies toward education and the "Mi pen rai" cultural attitude. ( Impossible to do in four years) Both those policies come with their own unforeseen consequences. It is really ,Macroeconomics 101 , but I wish him good luck. If he is successful it would not be very good for most of us here, because most of us earn our income outside Thailand and the rising tide will not lift our boat.

So many reason why a businessman does not like to give prices over the phone or , on line. First, they don't like making it easy for their coopetition to know their business. Second, they want to see have a conversation with you to fully understand what you want from them, and how difficult the job is, Not all jobs are the same, not all customers are as easy. Third they want an opportunity to sell the job.

‘No turning back’: how the Ukraine war has profoundly changed the EU
sirineou replied to Social Media's topic in World News
"Leaked U.S. strategy on Ukraine sees corruption as the real threat " "10/02/2023 05:00 AM EDT " "Biden administration officials are far more worried about corruption in Ukraine than they publicly admit, a confidential U.S. strategy document obtained by POLITICO suggests. The “sensitive but unclassified” version of the long-term U.S. plan lays out numerous steps Washington is taking to help Kyiv root out malfeasance and otherwise reform an array of Ukrainian sectors. It stresses that corruption could cause Western allies to abandon Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s invasion, and that Kyiv cannot put off the anti-graft effort." "Ukrainian graft has long been a concern of U.S. officials all the way up to President Joe Biden. But the topic was deemphasized in the wake of Russia’s February 2022 full-scale invasion, which Biden has called a real-life battle of democracy against autocracy. ‘No turning back’: how the Ukraine war has profoundly changed the EU

That's your opinion and I respect it , but don't agree with it. -
The article has a lot of could and might. Having read the tax agreement between the US and Thailand, I am pretty sure I would not have to pay tax on my pensions and annuity income but implementation of the tax law will create another layer of bureaucracy to the already complex process of immigration. I am sure we will have to hire an accountant, at least until we figure this thing out. Even though I have other options ,part of the reason I am in Thailand is because for me at this point it is easy. I already have my house here, by now have it the way I want it, my car, I transfer enough money every month to live conformable, and I do a yearly extension to stay. Who wants to be starting in another country at this stage of my life. So let's see how easy it remains. and whether it is worth the trouble.

‘No turning back’: how the Ukraine war has profoundly changed the EU
sirineou replied to Social Media's topic in World News
The quote " A little learning is a dangerous thing" attributed to Alexander Pope has never been more true than than this instance. because a little knowledge can be easily manipulated Propaganda is only effective when it contains part of the truth. and since many only have part of the truth, many otherwise intelligent and well meaning people are susceptible and easily manipulated. It is really sad. With the fall of the Soviet union , we had a chance to bring Russia in the fold of liberal democracy and once again we failed to capitalise. In the future It would IMO viewed as the greatest blunder of the 21 century. -

That is not true, they are not yours only if you purchase them unlawfully and you re discovered, same as in paper books. All the books I purchased are in my account library, if I was caught engaging in illegal book purchases, my account will be closed and as such all the books in that account will be lost. It stands to reason, you can't have books in your kindle account if you don't have a kindle account. Kindle with the proper reader is great!! You can have your whole library with you, anywhere you go. Try doing that with your paper books. When I am waiting some place, I take out my IPhone log on to my Kindle app, and pick up where I left on my Kindle device at home, I can change the fonds, or make the letters larger which come in handy as I get older, I can highlight a section, and make a note of it for later use, Too many things you can do with kindle to mention. Ohh and you pay less for the books. -
I think it's a great idea. It can also have emojis like this forum. It can have a Sad Emoji. (Ohhh) Laughing Emoji.(555) and a Fist pump emoji. (Yesss)

FYI , scanning the news headlines today and came across this one , concerning DC charging that I am sure it would make all of you happy. "After studying 12,500 Teslas, Recurrent concluded that “the results show no statistically significant difference in range degradation between Teslas that fast charge more than 90% of the time and those that fast charge less than 10% of the time.” " https://news.yahoo.com/study-reveals-truth-effects-tesla-050000840.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly9uZXdzLmdvb2dsZS5jb20v&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAACjLkSvsYS0waMbgGlgnQ56BRs6IwFMovqHu7VH0JkthoJd7xJ-bOhdE8tfIpKMcxfgkG3xs_iSxh32WRKj6M_2pQeLb2K-R-5Npf1bc69dxVQbGgylF6RnWFsHe5P-fOI0Ux2JhAs6HDgArF1Q3qHEM9ywj3rLszDUBuII9VhyS
