  1. I'm told that the roads between CM-Pai-MHS-Mae Sariang are in good shape as far as Mae Sariang but that the road between Mae Sariang and Mae Sot is in terrible condition.

    Ride On!

    Tony

Thanks. I really did want to ride the Burmese border down but even though I have a lot of time it is not unlimited. Unless I hear differently I guess I'll have to turn east at Mae Sariang.

Sorry about the Mae Sanang thing. The letters blended together on the map I was looking at.

  2. I found a thread about Chiang Mai to Pai. Sounds like the roads may be pretty rough. What about from Pai to Mae Hong Son?

I will be on a full size motorcycle. I do not plan on any speed records. I just want to know if the roads are passable on a large bike.

The next part of this trip would be south on 108 down through Mae Sanang and more of the same type of roads (as depicted on the map).

  3. if all it took was a little work, resources and a down turn in economies Mexico would be king of the hill by now but thailand is hendered by the same thing that holds mexico down; corruption and as long as the school boys keep it in place thailand will always be a developing country. btw the dollar was at 22 to the baht when i came here in 96.

And boy did that bubble pop. All the way to ฿50 to the dollar.

  4. I recently rode my Road King from Phuket to Nong Bua Lamphu passing on this road in August. I saw nothing out of the ordinary. Although further east toward Phun Phin they are in various stages of widening the road and there is some construction going on but it was an easy pass.

I can't really say anything about after the recent rains.

  5. A quick fix is DTAC. They have a promotion, 199 for 50 hours per month (plus 50 hours free, meaning you get 100 hours). I am near Loei, been using this for the past 6 months. Good enough for surfing and emails though Youtube is sluggish. I have had no problems. Another offer by DTAC is 49 baht per day usage if you are not in the country all the time. Tried this as well, same speed ad the 199 promotion. Very easy, just call DTAC - I think it's 1678 and they will configure your phone within a few minutes, and bingo...you are ready to go!

Unfortunately DTAC is not receivable at the house site. My wife had to change to 123 call so there would be service. I already have CDMA for that and it is lousy service for ฿ 500 per month.

  6. I heard some mean bastard spreading rumors that you cannot change the battery in an iPhone....can't be true, can it?

Apparently it is true for i-pods unless u pay almost the cost of a new one to an Apple dealer. The screens on my i-pods go before the battery so i haven't found out for sure but after having an i-pod i would not go near a iPhone.

On line you can google up replacement battery kits for I pods. With instruction and tool(s). $10-15. I haven't looked for Iphones.

I changed 1 before. the battery and the screen still work.

  7. I am confused. Is it me or is it OK for a government official to meet, discuss, seek approval of government policy and giggle with a wanted fugative, charged with corruption, treason and funding the overthrow of that government? Not to mention a convicted criminal on the run to avoid his goal sentence and further prosecution?

Yes I think you are a bit confused.Sanan isn't a government official and can meet who he likes.Secondly this isn't the first meeting by neutral parties with Thaksin, for example the respected Bangkok Mayor Sukhumbhand met him in Brunei some months ago.Thirdly Thaksin remains the most popular politician in the country (and I grant you the most unpopular) and thus has a huge domestic base which can't be ignored.Fourthly he has transformed politics in Thailand, with the present government copying many of his policies.Fourthly he has been found guilty of only one relatively trivial offence.Fifthly there's a widely held view that many of the other charges against him are politically motivated.I don't think he's been charged with treason, has he?

In terms of the overthrow of governments, much of the current difficulty can be tracked back to the criminal coup of 2006 where the perpetrators remain unpunished. They awarded themselves a post facto pardon.I suggest first on the critical path is to nail these brutes and their not so hidden amart supporters.

And Thaksin? I think he's finished - too divisive and flawed.Let him stay in exile for a few years. But he's changed the country permanently so that the majority can no longer be patronised and ignored - which explains the fury and vengeful behaviour of the greedy, corrupt elite.

    All good points.

Relatively trivial? Does that make it better than ................................

  8. Highly doubtful that you can get a landline. I live in a town and cannot get one. I use C.A.T. C.D.M.A. It works very well. If you live within 3-4 kilometres of a mobile phone tower that is equipped to deliver, internet, and you have a clear line of sight, you will most probably, not need an aerial. However , any further away and you will need one. Cost is B9,000 (including aerial. Monthly fees are around B850, including V.A.T.I am very happy with it.

Thanks, I have been trending toward them but since I haven't moved in full time....

Any body know about satellite systems?

I use to live in Nong Bua town and used CAT cdma which always had a great reception I now live about 10 kilo's away on the mountain and still get a low connection but its always connected and never interupted.

Go to the CAT office on the left just past the Tuesday market, the girl there speaks good English and will tell you if will get a reception.

There are not many farrang in Nong Bua Lumphu so I bet I have seen you around town before.

I can recommend CAT cdma, there is a first payment for the novatel wireless dongle but you get 3 months free. 770 baht a month after but they prefer it to be in a Thai name as I tried with my Passport and no joy.

I actually live about 25 k, from the Loei border. I have maybe been to Nong Bua proper about 20 times for shopping and I take my truck to the Isuzu dealer for service. O yeah, K bank also.

  9. I have an architect working on a house plan. Now I am looking for a recommended builder in Nong Bua Lamphu.

I am at the western side near Loei in case there are some there.

  10. Does anybody know the process for getting electric run about 2.5 km back to a property from the main road. And approximate cost ?

It may not be that far but because of the speed you have to drive it seems like it.

  12. Loei is doing ok I think it has enough now only 1 & half hour to Udon for anything you need

You must live there. I feel for you but I live 50 km from Loei and 100 km from Udorn. I am looking forward to a Lotus there.

  13. Checked baggage rules are determined by the originating carrier. If it's a code-share flight then the rules of the airline listed on the ticket apply.

However the OP is asking about carry-on baggage. In that case you will be subject to the rules (and whims) of the gate personnel at each airport. That said, as long as your carry-on meets the size requirements of Thai, there is no chance that they will weigh your carry-on bag.

I am surprised however that United allows 50 pounds of carry-on baggage.

Not a chance any carrier allows 50 lbs of carry on luggage. 18 lbs is the most I have ever heard of. Chances are it will not be weighed anyhow.

Now for checked baggage. If it is an international flight it should be 20 kilos.

Carry-on baggage policies for all United travel

For worldwide travel on any United flight, you may carry on one bag and one personal item such as a purse, briefcase or laptop computer. Your carry-on bag...

    must fit under your seat or in the overhead bin;

    must not be more than 9 x 14 x 22 inches (23 x 35 x 56 cm) or 45 linear inches* (114 linear cm); and

may be required to travel as checked baggage if the bag cannot be safely stowed on your flight.

It says nothing about weight. Do you mean checked luggage? If so, assuming you are traveling economy, it is one bag, 23kg, 62 linear inches (158 linear cm).

I had a weird ticket my last trip. I was on 3 different airlines. None were code shares. The first leg was a feeder flight from Vegas to Portland. They honored the baggage allowance for international flights. And if you check your bag at the curb, they don't weigh it...

I got this with my Eticket from United Airlines and a call to them confirmed 50Lbs

What would you possibly have that weighs 50 lbs and fits in those dimensions?
