AFAIK, everyone here is masquerading as somebody, or something, else. I find it difficult to figure out who, or what, I am masquerading as at any given moment, as I read posts on this forum ... even more difficult to locate where, and when, I am, and how I got here from whatever there was. I'm not complaining: I love living in (whatever) Chiang Mai; I think these fluctuations of identity/reality are one of the key features that make me feel so at home here. There's a simple practice that helps me really enjoy each day here: stand in front of a mirror when you wake up, and repeat the mantra: "gajok gohok" (Thai words for mirror and liar) until the you that appears in the mirror is what feels right. Chiang Mai changed/changing ? Of course: other than in old photographs, what city or area hasn't changed in ten or twenty years ? With aging, what eyeballs have not changed; what modes of perception have not changed ? What memories have not been reshaped by both trauma, and revelation, by dreams fulfilled, and dreams crushed ? There are so many types of cancer, with so many different etiologies, varying symptoms, prognosis, treatment modalities, etc., that a "cancer support group" ... well, what did you have in mind ? The realities and needs and concerns of people just diagnosed, or staged, are really different than the realities of those being treated and dealing with chemo, radiation, and/or surgery, facing limits to mobility and health. And, the needs and concerns of people post-treatment struggling to resume their former ways of life, possibly deaking with relapse: different. I once worked for the American Cancer Society as a field-researcher, interviewing 40 families where each family had more than person with cancer. Transcribing those interviews ... taught me to avoid generalities about "cancer." A famous essay by scientist Stephen J. Gould, "The Median is not the Message:" has helped many people think more clearly about diagnosis, prognosis, and "survival/recurrence" statistics: Gould's Essay imho, a "support group" has to have institutional sponsorship and support, and has to have limits on the types of clientele to have any chance for cohesion. Once upon a time in Amazing Chiang Mai, movies, and tv series, etc., in these formats, were plentiful at places like Pornthip Plaza, a big shop near Maharaj hospital/Suan Dok on Thanon Suthep. I used to find some classic movies and foreign films ... not the bang-bang-hyper-macho trash shown on various ISP tv services. Shut down by BIB ? Gone out of business ? Years ago, in the small Soi just west of/behind the (old) Montri Hotel at Pratu Thapae was an all woman's tailor shop that did wonderful work, including custom tailoring for menswear. By respectable, I mean not a place where men go for ... uhhh ... financial liposuction, and other "extras." A quiet, clean, not crowded, place ? Where a weary traveler can recover from 30 hours of international travel ? And, I mean "nuwat boran" massage, as taught in the famous school in Wat Pho, and its branches. To complicate: while there are lots of hi-so spas for women here, they are very pricy ... is there such a thing as a spa with traditional massage and some other relaxing procedures ... for under 1000 baht for a package ?
