  1. Judging by feedback from those using Makro in Bangkok/Chonburi(?) there isn't much if anything to be saved by shopping there.... :)

your not wrong there,a few months ago we went to Makro in Chonburi ,not worth the trip.

I've been to the Makro branches in Chonburi and Rayong, the Rayong one was far better in my opinion, but a freind of mine has recently been to the one in Rayong and he says the Chonburi one is better??? but neither anywhere as good as they were in the UK though.

  2. Work is carrying on at a frantic pace anyway, trucks carrying upfill, and now a lot of piling taking place, whatever it is will become apparent soon.

Makro?? within walking distance of my house - oh the hardship!! :)

  3. There is a huge ammount of ground being carted in to a site on Sukhumvit very close to Underwater World, next to the recently established used car lot there, now from a vauge memory - that would be the site of a 1000+ Rai development of Pattaya's inland waterpark.

Not sure if it was any of the local mail's, but it was supposed to be a huge inland water ski ,etc???,

However, locals assure me, that the front at least, is Pattaya's new Makro??

    Anybody know for sure??

  4. Thanks for all the pointers and help guys. Me and the missus were back in Pattaya 3 weeks ago for a week and decided that it's unfortunately not the place to bring up the kids (we decided to stay for a week in the middle of town this time to see what it was like). Although the Dark Side is a totally different place, it's still Pattaya. When you compare house prices the US (Texas) to house prices in Pataya, they're about the same. For a 3rd world country, that's silly.

Thanks, we'll be back on holiday. Over and out.

    Sandy

Makes a perfect argument for moving to Pattaya then! :)

  5. In all my time here I have never, repeat never heard a Thai ask another Thai for a tip, its not done out of respect, its done out of fear of the consequences, these people are at the bottom end of Thai society and they know it, they also know the consequences if they disrespect another Thai, loss of face loss of job etc etc, as previous poster said shows just how much respect they have for you, a simple FO works every time, if these people have no respect for me why should I respect them.

You must be kidding, "tipping" is rife between Thais espescially at places like the Land Office, and Banks when Thais are trying to get loans!! and we are not talking 20 Baht here!

I would call it bribery but they just ask for a "tip" and they consider it quite normal practise! :)

By the way, telling them to FO is not smart and will probably land you in bother, take care.

  6. I've encountered a few snakes here, poisonous and non poisonous, 99% of the time they are off rather quickly.

By far the most bad tempered snake i have come across was a Radiated Rat Snake, also known as a Copperhead Racer.

Apparently this species is harmless to humans but jeez did he repeatedly strike out - wow, to anybody that did not know it was harmless (like me at the time!) it would be rather scary!! :)

I always carry my handy little book with me to identify them. :D

  7. Here's an easy way to overcome your embarrassment for not leaving a tip.

They're being exceptionally rude by asking for a tip, so not leaving one is a good repayment for rudeness.

When people are rude enough to ask for a tip don't leave one. It just makes the situation worse when you reward bad behaviour.

My Filipino gf taught me this because in her country they never ask for tips and she considers it very bad manners.

    Absolutely spot on Tropo.

I have no problem giving a tip for good service, but i am dammned if i will give a tip just because it is the "norm" !
