It gets stranger by the day here. DLT wanting ID's, banks wanting yellow books....things the majority of people don't have and have never wanted or needed. Anyway, at least you are good for 5 or 6 years, who can guess what you'll need next time.

That's why doing it at the airport is a good idea. They don't want copies of anything and it takes 10 minutes. And they'll do the application form/photo itself for 200 baht extra.
The people, not necessarily the nation, are certainly caring and supportive of anyone in need. But that wont get him medical care which he needs. More than once I've asked about ailing relatives of a similar age and and am told simply "he's waiting to die".
