  1. It sounds the logical conclusion that the price would drop except for your other point about it being enforced enthusiastically.
  2. The opposite in some respects but it may well have an effect in the longer term. It's not really Russia as a country we need to defeat but Putin and his government.
  3. That's not true. They might not be any use in a military conflict but then is that really a problem for Thailand? They would however be perfect for the Thai military to play in. Maybe a flight for the girlfriend to improve their sex life?
  4. I'm sure a while back they said they were making it illegal to ride in the cargo bed. My wife mentioned it as well and I said I thought it was already illegal but not enforced.
  5. Mahasarakham has 2 universities so its the most likely to have uni bars.
  6. I also have safety measures for that. My wife won't let me go to night clubs or massage parlours. If there is collusion with the police which wouldn't surprise me then sadly there will always be a danger in these types of establishments
  7. I think it's more a case of what there is isn't doing anything constructive.
  8. So you're saying I'm not a Sex God but a man with a bag of condoms?
  9. I can't see anything on their website so I would imagine it's just masks that are needed.
  10. As others have said no real problem. I flew to Khon Kaen on 13th March and then a return trip to BKK from KKC in the middle of May both with Thai Smile. Masks were needed and probably still are. There was no food, tea or coffee but they did give you the food when you left.
  11. Just noticed that should read 'I glanced to my left'. It's age you know.
  12. The trouble is how else do you deal with it? You can't just get rid of them all. It will take time to turn it around as it's such a big problem. Hopefully if enough are kicked out then it will dissuade others joining because of the corruption and the chance to benefit. Things should improve as those who are corrupt become a smaller part. Of course the police aren't the only place where there's corruption so more work is needed.
  13. That's the problem isn't it. It's the same with the points system they are thinking of which could involve the taking of a licence. If you aren't likely to get stopped by the police and if you do you just pay a few hundred baht and are allowed on your way then it won't work. Taking the vehicle is a good step so long as they don't have enough money to either own another or just buy one.
  14. Assault isn't right but I can understand the anger. Things might be different if the police were properly employed to do their job. From what I can tell they are underpaid and are allowed to make up their wages with fines or bribes. It's as if the main purpose of the Thai traffic police is to fund the traffic police rather than make roads safer. Look at all the food delivery drivers from Grab, Food Panda etc. All the ones I've seen have been wearing helmets so why are they so different from others. My guess is that it's a case of 'no helmet no job'. That may apply to having a licence as well. I think with the police the amount you pay if you have no helmet is pitched so the police still get a steady money stream rather than making people wear a helmet which would cut that supply. It doesn't help when police get to the stage of wearing a peaked cap, the cap becomes more important than their brain. There's a tendency from posters on here, myself included to make fun of the situation. There's not much we can do about it so we may as well have a laugh. The fact is that alongside the friendly welcoming land of smiles there's a darker side. There are many deaths on the roads of men women and children. That will always happen but it could be cut with a bit of effort and responsibility. A proper police force with the correct funding to enforce the rules. A lot of what's needed in terms of regulation is already there is already there. Helmets, seat belts, not riding in the back of pickups, licences etc. A proper diving test would help and retesting if needed. If the police could work a bit more outside office hours and not just on roads big enough for all the police, cones and the table to take the money. No policeman ever needs to take money. Of course there's the young kids riding bikes with all the bad habits they've learnt off the parents. The trouble is that faced with the choice of being responsible and making some effort in order to save lives or just not bothering Thailand as a nation seems to say " Nah too much trouble let them die". That may seem harsh and they probably don't link it directly but it's basically a lack of adult responsibility. Before someone mentions the fact they believe they will be reborn I'd make 2 points. As far as I know in Buddhism life is important and rebirth isn't an excuse for a lack of care. get a big knife or a gun if you can and go up to a Thai as if to use it against them saying "don't worry you'll be reborn" and see how concerned they are. Try it on someone important. They wont have much security because it doesn't matter. It seemed to matter to those who assaulted the driver. RIP to the vendor and sympathies the husband and family
  15. I did the online test last month. I can't remember anything on there that I didn't already know so by now hopefully you'll have done yours no trouble. One of the problems is that they've not used a very good translator so you could understand it easily if you had time to read it a couple of times but when you're trying to read quickly it's more difficult. They just need to pay for a proper translation or get it checked by an English speaker. So it'll stay the way it is. It would have been nice if they'd driven outside of Bangkok. They'd find it much more challenging upcountry. As you drive the next day you do get the feeling you've been privileged to see a secret video with information those around you on the road have never seen. Mine was the car video but I assume there's a different one for bikes. Or maybe not
  16. The LM laws are somewhat flexible anyway depending on who it's being used against. I've never heard of the "theft by night" law either but I've just looked it up. Mind you there are weird laws in many countries that aren't always used and are often very old.
  17. I didn't know that. How many prosecutions have there in those circumstances? The answer to that might give a clue to how much interest there is.
  18. My wife works in civil government and she gets 10 days holiday a year plus the national holidays so I'm not sure if the "long paid holidays" is accurate. As for getting food, they usually bring it with them but sometimes they can get what my wife refers to as "the maid" to get it although I haven't seen this recently. These are the women who clean, lock up ect.
  19. I remember going to get our affirmation of freedom to marry some years ago. After visiting the embassy and getting the translation we handed in the papers to a guy who just took them one by one and without looking just picked them up again and put them in a tray or envelope. I think he may have counted them. Then we waited and were called into a room where there was a woman in uniform (almost certainly with a university degree) who just stamped each one without looking at them. My wife was in front of me and sat down but I didn't as by then the stamping was finished and we left. I think a lot of it is down to job creation. They seem to split jobs that could be done by one person to use more.
  20. Our house is down a short shared driveway and we don't have a sign with the address either on the road or on our gate so my wife printed out the house number, put it in a plastic sleeve and tied it to the gate. Then we took pictures. Another time she wrote it on an old tile with a marker pen. Thus time we had a visit from immigration and immigration police. I think there were 3 or 4 of them plus 2 people from the village to back us up. Oh and me but I think my only involvement was in the obligatory pictures.
  21. Ah yes the rubber stamps. My wife works in a government office so I'm used to seeing lots of stamps but when we went to immigration for a visa extension and provide my signature at least 20 times the woman there had 4 large plastic boxes full of rubber stamps. And that was only the ones I could see.
  22. In the UK last year I was out for a walk and I had to cross next to a roundabout. I looked to my right before I crossed to the centre Island as that's where the traffic would be coming. Just a I was about to step into the road I glanced to my right and saw a van coming the wrong way and stopped just in time. I put that down to living here and looking everywhere.
