  1. Thanks - I had no idea. To the OP - I am with NatWest on line banking in the UK and again, nothing from them, but they may have had that information from back in the day when I worked in the UK. I became a 'tax exile' when I move to Bangkok back in '93.
  2. Nothing for me from Krungsri or SCB banks - then again, I am employed and pay tax every month. Krungsri is my main bank and I use online banking all of the time. SCB does not allow it any more.
  3. It is like the old saying - 'who will police the police'. The task force set up to oversee bad things - doing bad things. Love it.
  4. Sadly, they take down a lot of poor people as they do fall.
  5. Not quite true. He has overspent the budget on major infrastructure projects - aka brown envelopes. Apart from that - no positive achievements.
  6. You were actually beaten with wooden poles as she was? I am amazed that that is part of police training.
  7. And this is the Thais complaining that the foreigners are let off and the police only target Thais. From The Thaiger today “This completely dares the power of Patong police officers. Foreigners are not afraid of Thai laws. They even dared to spray messages on the footpath. Police, look at this. Do not arrest only Thais. This will ruin the image of tourism in the province.” Thai netizens commented on the video, calling on police to take action in the case. Many accused the police officers of only arresting locals and ignoring all the illegal foreigners. Two sides to every coin.
  8. So you really believe that it is OK to beat recruits black and blue? Unbelievable.
  9. They did when I lived there. Especially when it rained and it rains quite a lot. When it rains, they stopped cruising the streets and went static. The only way to get a taxi was to call a number. When you called the number, there was an extra 'booking' charge on the bill. However, you are spot on when you say that something needs to be done. The taxis in Thailand are on a different level of scamming. Especially on the resort islands.
  10. Agreed Everyone that I work with is Thai. Most have been pulled over and fined at some stage for not wearing a helmet. I usually have to send someone down with the money to pay the fine. OK when it was 500 baht but now, at 2,000 baht............ I even bought them all helmets in the past. Twice. They just sold them a few days later. NB for those promoting an 'us and them' theory - none of it was reported on AN or in any newspaper. But it happens.
  11. Or maybe, just maybe, English language newspapers and websites do not post articles in Thai? (That is where the Thai miscreants are usually reported along with Thai TV items.) I can assure you, just as many Thais are singled out for money or prejudice. If you want to know what some (murderous) Thais get up to look in the BP on a Sunday. Under the Life channel (Social and Lifestyle). usually written by Mae Moo
  12. I was on the mainland a couple of weeks ago and a large group of Thais on big bikes were chased by the police and pulled over. I did not see the article here on AN so maybe it did not happen? Some posters here seem to think that if they do not see the CCTV or it is not reported here then it does not happen. This is not aimed at you CK - just an observation on many comments that appear regularly on AN.
  13. These folk are after BJ. End of. Their complaint is about the 200 guns. Not gambling.
  14. I did not arrive in Bangkok until 1993. If I met him, I never realised it. Lots of 'interesting' folk around in those days. No internet or social media back then (thank God). As a newbie from the UK, I found his writings entertaining. I never thought of them a gospel or serious. They were just social gossip. 'Nuff said.
  15. Appeasing Hitler by Tim Bouverie. Early stages yet but quite interesting.
  16. We are lucky here on Samui - it is only one day. I go out in the morning and stay at home for the rest of the day. In the morning, get a little splash from a few young, local Thai kids, but the mayhem usually starts lunch time.
  17. When it happened to me (when Noah was a lad) I had to go to Bangkok to get it changed. Mind you, back then, Samui immigration were not the friendliest/most helpful folk and there have been lots of changes to immigration 'local' rules since.
  18. This is probably due to a recent case of a device with a battery that caught fire in the cabin. I cannot remember too much about the details, but it was either in the overhead locker or the seat pocket depending on which article one read. Cabin crew put out the fire ok. Found a report here https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/spirit-airlines-overhead-bin-fire/index.html
  19. Diagnosed cataracts last year and found this web site at Bangkok Hospital Phuket. https://www.brightviewcenter.com/ Very expensive but absolutely top class. (200k). Best eyesight ever. Tri focal lenses means that I do not wear glasses any more. (I needed glasses for reading and different ones for mid range.) This PDF should answer most questions. Flow-RLE-Flyer-1.pdfFlow-RLE-Flyer-1.pdfFlow-RLE-Flyer-1.pdf How painful can it be? Nil pain - anaesthetic in the eye drops What are the best practices in choosing an intra ocular lens? Is this a once in a lifetime operation (under normal conditions)? Depends on your age. At 72 they will last a lifetime. Recovery time (under normal conditions)? The replacement took one hour (no pain). Sat in a dark room for a couple of hours. Walked back to my hotel (with dark glasses) and was typing emails that afternoon and updating spreadsheets that afternoon. After full recovery, what precautions are necessary - eg is swimming OK Pool or sea? After about 2 weeks, nothing other can cleaning your eye now and again. No water in the eye for those two weeks.
