  1. From what I have seen (and it is not that much) Suratthani is a crossroads city. Many people pass through it - on their way to somewhere else. Not a large expat population. I did not see any other foreigners whilst I was wondering around on my stays there - other than folk 'in transit'. Some good restaurants that tended to be in clusters. It has some very good hospitals, both government and private as well as good schools. The only expat people that I know there are teachers and they tended to socialise mostly with other expat teachers. It is obviously the centre of government for the province and I suspect that you would need to speak Thai for most of life's daily chores. Those are my observations from my few stays there. This forum is probably not going to be much help to you - maybe look for a 'Suratthani expat Facebook group'.
  2. That would explain it - she was a teacher and had paid SS for many years. Thank you.
  3. Hi Sheryl I am confused and I do not want to dispute your very valuable comments to AN but..... My wife died in her sleep. I rushed her to the nearest hospital that had decent emergency care . It was a private hospital (Bangkok Hospital Samui). They tried to resuscitate her for almost an hour and eventually gave up. I went back the next day to pay the bill - no charge. Hence my comment. We are both from the UK.
  4. Any advert that starts with 'your trusted source' is not to be trusted.
  5. I suspect that as he was a construction worker, he had a truck. We will probably never know.
  6. But there are six other hospitals on Samui. Or did he not have insurance!!! Mind you - emergency care is FOC. It is the follow up that is expensive.
  7. I am not sure which is worse. Air pollution or military pollution. At least the air pollution improves with time. (Until next year.)
  8. Good article. I am surprised that it was printed. Starting to look under the rug maybe?
  9. And the Swiss shockwaves roll on and on. This is an old trick used extensively in Thailand. Quite a few plots near me have done a similar thing. Land titles are being revoked.
  10. From the full article “It’s not like tomorrow everybody will drop their prices by 30%. It’s going to take a long time to implement it step by step,” says Conrad, as the price changes must be reflected across the supply chain. “Maybe by the end of the year, we could see some effect.”
  11. The real issue at the moment is working illegally. Not prostitution. The Russian girl just happened to be a prostitute and that spices up the headline.
  12. Self defence is not assault. What would you do if he groped your butt?
  13. Koh Samui - where it is nearly always hot and sunny. ⛱️🍺
  14. The deniers are out in force already. Just waiting for the old and well worn alcohol comparisons next.
  15. But the timeline does not match. From The Examiner report - From the Phuket Express But the suspect left Tuesday night on a flight at 09.38 pm Confusing or what???
  16. The risk is being caught. Go and admit overstay, just a fine. If someone catches you in the 2 days before you get to the desk - possible arrest, and a bigger problem/fine. The immigration folk sometimes hang around the ferry terminal here in the morning and check passports of foreigners when boarding the ferry. Quite a few folk doing border bounces were caught out and arrested.
  17. I find Windguru to be the most accurate for here. https://www.windguru.cz/30397
  18. Ditto from me. No rain here so far this year! Some short downpours 'up on the mountain' as the locals call it, but nothing disastrous. Just an hour or so. Speedboats still going out from Bangrak every morning for the diving. No bad days yet.
  19. Lots of foreign business owners getting away with it. Look at the construction industry for starters. It's been going on for decades.
  20. Please send them to Koh Samui. Most businesses here are desperate for workers. Salaries are through the roof and still shortages everywhere. I know of one hotel that is paying cleaners up to 24,000 baht per month (including tips, perks etc). NB Russian language skills NOT required.
