  1. The Police check point you mention has been in operation at that location for several years and it stops far more Thai's than it does farangs, I live on the East side of the bridge and I pass through that check point at least twice a day, every day, it's purpose exists to catch and fine idiots who drive motorbikes whilst not wearing a crash helmet, a sting it is not.

And for catching people turning left on a red light! (Coming up from River Market road)

Is turning left on a red light illegal??

    unless signposted otherwise, yes.
  2. I believe an English language DL is sufficient for tourists rather than International DL, but only for the class of vehicle being driven. So a UK car DL is no good for motorcycle.

I think the BIB have confiscated my uk Licence at least 10 times with never a query on it.

however having read your comment about the uk licence being no good for bike; I am checking now.

with uk licence we can drive on the road.

*motorcycles with or without sidecar and a max design speed exceeding 50kmh and engine over 50cc

*any vehicle upto 3.5tonnes with no more than 8 seats

*motor vehicles for carrying goods upto 7.5 tonnes

so if they accept a uk licence as valid, then it covers us for motorbikes.

I once brought an official international licence with me, it only lasts one year and costs about £10, but the one and only time I was stopped, I flashed this other permit, and they had never seen one before, they wanted my uk paper licence or plastic card.

  3. In a related development, a report claimed that Thaksin's personal jet had landed at Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai International Airport yesterday, and that Thaksin was staying overnight at a local luxury resort.

Rather than "personal" I guess he has to share it. Times are hard. Of course the report might be a load of <deleted>. Or the Nation could really change the habits of a lifetime and put the "investigative" into journalism and give them a call. Maybe even pop round. It's just down the road. They even provide a map.

Most private owned jets are listed to be operated by companies similar to this so they have an AOC to operate under.

though a little investigation to try and find Thaksins personal Jet, the best I could find currently is A6-BBD operated by Empire Aviation Group (UAE), though I couldn't find a very solid reference for this.

  4. one thing i'll mention that hasnt been raised yet, since the music buffoons went through and stopped everyone playing pirated music, they all (well mostly all) play the same bloody music disc distributed by said buffoons.

a bit of personality and variety in the bars was lost there.

being said, I havent heard 'Gotye - someone i used to know' for a few months now. new licence, new disc maybe?

  5. They did raid a hospital during the 2010 riots and took a few redshirt bodies to parade around their protest site.

No. They went after the army snipers that violated the agreement not to station personnel in the hospital.

The snipers managed to hide and evade detection from the one incident during the Bangkok troubles.

  6. otherwise, as long as this Thaksin is around, there is no solution in sight, and there will never be. Regret to say that there is only one solution to this ever increasing problem!

Agreed. Mr. Thaksin returns and runs for PM next election. Subsequent to his victory, peace and prosprity will be ensured for thailand. wink.png

Presumably that would be after he has served his two year prison sentence?

Sorry, I forgot that would make him a released criminal and criminals aren't allowed in Thai politics

    pardon takes care of that.

    pardon or amnesty?
  7. Maybe if previous Governments/Army over the past 50 years had thought about helping the farmers/other less well off with education, economic opportunity etc, then maybe the power vacuum which Thaksin stepped into and abused would never have been created.

Closing the stable door after the horse has bolted for the old political and Army General Bangkok families.

This problem isn't only confined to Thailand , take a good look at the countries around her, except for Malaysia, Singapore and H.K. who all had British rule and Values knocked into them, the rest are all junta unrepresented rabble , ask yourself, who runs the government of Thailand my friend, the Generals in Charge of the departments , a trade off for free elections, so who does run Thailand???? it ain't Yingluckbah.gif

    Myanmar had british rule.
  8. the reference is hardly tenuous, there are many many many similar references

and therefore the conclusion is hardly arbitrary

but yours was. If 1000 is a decent sample size to measure 200 million then 1200 is not too small, is it.

the only position to take to invalidate the poll would be that the polling company did not use a random sample.

sigh. I said something about arbitrary and tenuous before, denied, rinsed then repeated.

You draw the conclusions you want. I'll take it all with 1kg of salt.

if you dont understand how polls work, then fine

How many posts have you made in other threads since I posted this? why dig it up 3 days later to make such an insightful retort?
  9. I just see a whole lot of buz words in that article but none of it makes any sense - democracy and ignore the law in the same paragraph - this woman wouldn't know a democracy in a hundred lives, she along with the rest of the rabble don't have the capacity to understand what the word means.

Ears eyes open mouth shut is the best advise I can offer

I thought she was a communist.

I thought she still is a communist.

  11. Why don't they just do the usual? Take two wires from a suitable length of cable, jam them into a socket with a couple of match sticks, at someones house near the Samui Ferry Terminal, then use the ferry to drag the cable across to Samui and rig up a few hundred extension sockets like the ones you can buy from Big C for 200 Baht, if they need to get them across roads or other obstacles, they can simply tape them to the ground with some brown parcel tape or prop them up with 5 metre lenghts of bamboo - Alternatively if it is crossing a road, they could provide drivers with a Thai to sit on the car roof with a stick to lift the cable up as they pass underneath! I love watching them perched precariously on top of vehicles as they hurtle along the road - it looks like a scene from Pirates of The Caribbean! Poke a few of their eyes out with a sharp stick, give them an eye patch, they already usually have the machete - Johnny Somchai Depp-A- Porn

Realising your post is light-hearted, can I point out that underwater power cable transmission is done as DC and requires rectifier/inverter units at either end. Not my end of the business, so I am not sure why, but guessing it will have something to do with the magnetic flux of AC.

    or capacitance of the cable.

  12. alright man, misread your post - technically correct but there is no reason to think it is not representative making the logical assumption that the polling company knows how to poll and run the numbers.

you "seemed" to want to cast some shadow of doubt on the results with a comment "only x people" but that is then entire purpose of polling and theres no reason dude to doubt the results based on that. double the numbers, same result, triple the numbers the same result, ask every thai the same result. within the margin of error of the polling. basic stats.

there is 1 reason to think this is not representative of the whole population - the sample is so small.

It maybe accurate, but the uncertainty at this sample size is so huge you'd really be stretching to draw conclusions from it.

    not true man

a sample size of 1000 gives a margin of error of 3% when measuring over 200 million adults in america

    http://www.publicage...nd-margin-error

    the results should be solid

    solid

    really solid

a very arbitrary conclusion to draw from a very tenuous reference.
