  1. And secondly, this intersection, despite having large amounts of traffic with different routes, has no traffic lights or guidance of any sort, leaving it to a complete free for all?

I'm pretty sure this intersection has flashing orange and red traffic lights indicating who has right of way.
  2. Paid my "tax" today. The police were pulling over nearly every motorbike - Thai and Farang a like and coming up with reasons to charge us. Mine was the left turn on a red light. Sigh. I suppose stay away from Narawat on Saturdays!

The sign says essentially, "Wait for the light." If ya can't read it - opps! But like I said, memorize the signs by rote memory. Left turn are legal in Thailand at most stop lights, as is turning right from a one-way on to a road with traffic moving from left to right -- except if there is a sign saying not too.

no, the reverse is true. It is illegal to turn left on a red light unless there is a sign to say you can "with caution", and it is a blue sign with a white "turn left" arrow.

  3. I took some pictures this morning of the place I got nabbed by the police.

This was an innocent enough looking intersection. Turn right and theres the bridge, turn left towards Thae Pai Gate. I turned left on red last week and then saw a militia of police right around the corner. They kindly informed me that they were the bridge trolls and there was a 400 baht fine for left turn on red in Thailand. That fact is still debatable. Im not sure what the signs say but I dont see any clear sign saying no left on red light. But I dont read Thai. This is facing north with the bridge on the right.

There is an illuminated sign telling you to stop, it's called a stop light, and when it is red you must stop. The only exception is when there is a blue sign with a left-turn arrow indicating you can turn left on red with caution. if this blue sign does not exist, you must stop.

  4. One original with a copy is ok for both renewals. 2 copies will not work, I tried it 3 weeks ago and she wanted 1 original.

When I got the original, I got 2 done at the same time (i needed one for something else) 500 baht for the 2. I'm under the impression that is an exception rather than the rule though.

  5. What is he considering an educated Thai. Probably the hi so's who are to good to mix with the educated Graduates of the red shirt schools.

With that many people involved some one is bound to get sick even if none of them ever come near the moat. Saying people will get sick is what we call a Barnum statement. You know the guy who said there is a sucker born every moment.

If any one is really interested in how many people get sick from water coming out of the moat in Songkram go check with the hospitals.

the system is stuffing the quotes up again.

I usually agree with your posts, but in this instance it was never my intention to politicise.

    I'm just being a kettle.

  6. They chlorinate the moat right before Songkran every year. And the rats start pi**ing and sh***ing in it as soon as they've gone.I'd advise you not to brush your teeth in the tap water in Singapore. I've pissed and crapped in that. The first time a had a bucket of moat/swamp water land on my face, I just realised I was I a traffic jam with thousands of other people getting the same treatment. No body got sick.Otherwise, stay away from the moat/klongs and you'll get mostly tap water. Each to their own. My advice came from educated Thais who stay far away from the moat in Songkran. You'll also notice a few people covering their ears if they're in sniffing distance, as ear infections are extremely common from the moat, too.And I'd be interested to know how you know out of "thousands of other people" that "No body got sick".

I'll use the same "educated Thais" reference you used.

  8. Interesting, ... not venturing to make a purchase immediately, so not willing to call ... but would like to know where the new shop is in HDong, since I pass often. Last time I dropped into the Green the gentleman gave me some good info on the economy of Chinese digital to analogue valve amps that I should follow up on some time.

what is an "digital to analog valve amp"? Im Guessing an DAC with a valve (pre) amp output, otherwise it would be a house filling monstrosity if valves were doing the digital conversion.

Valves are very low-fi, don't know why anyone would want to use them unless you are trying to deliberately change the original sound.

Valves are very "low fi"??? LOL, I have used them in my business for more than 35 years now and there is no technology that comes close to being as high-fidelity as valve technology! There is a HUGE valve revival all over the world right now and the trend is getting more an more popular.

they are what they are, good for guitar amplifiers and distortion effects for the same reason that makes them garbage for hi-fi amps.

LOL. Garbage for hi-fi amps. Sorry but you haven't got a clue. I've got 35 years of experience in designing, building, and using valve amps professionally.

Edit: There is obviously a glitch in the new TV software as I never wrote most of the stuff that shows you quoted me.

yeah there is a glitch. Iphone app it seems.

but yeah Instrumentation engineer, yeah I haven't got a clue.

Take any amplifier topology, build an amplifier with both valves and modern components and the amp built with valves will show its age and the amp built with modern components will shine and come in 1/10 the price.

If you want distortion, noise, non-linear frequency/ phase response and micro phonic feedback then use valves.

If you want to reproduce the source signal and amplify it without all of that garbage, go modern components.

Or unless you want it to survive an EMP from a thermonuclear detonation.

Odd thing is, 5 years ago I thought class-d amps couldn't match a good class a/a-b, probably good enough to run a sub-woofer. now if your source is digital you should be seriously looking at them. The amp is the DAC.

  11. Regarding the Thai courts I recall back in 2001 The Orphan(the UN.is not my father)wasn't in power long when the constitutional court brought charges against him,2 days later the Thai airways 737 jet he was supposed to travel on exploded on the Tarmac at Don muang. The NTSB found traces of explosives But this residue, like all other evidence of a bomb, disappeared in a hurry. There was an outpouring of sympathy for the PM(not so much for the dead crew member). All charges in the case were droped.....
