Western Union better than “Wise”
Jaggg88 replied to Everyman's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
It depends on what reason you choose on Wise for the transfer. If you select the last option 'long long-term living expenses in Thailand' it will take longer to transfer but is flagged as a foreign transfer. If you choose any other option it is flagged as an internal transfer. I transfer directly from my bank every time as the fee from Wise is smaller than using a debit card and the money arrives in seconds. I don't need it to be a foreign transfer. I did it two days ago. My bank forces me to authorise the transfer using an electronic PIN machine so perhaps other banks delay the funds transfer until it has been authorised. -

Taxi driver arrested for attempted rape of son’s teenage girlfriend
Jaggg88 replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Exactly, that's the age of consent in Thailand The child is subject to parental control of the parents until the child is legally determined to be an adult. Adulthood occurs when the child reaches the age of majority which is 20 years old in Thailand or when the child gets married. Until this time, parents have rights and obligations to their child. Siam Legal. The age of consent in Thailand is 15 but it is very complicated and until 20 years old the parent's permission is required and that can be withdrawn at any time and a complaint of rape lodged with the police. -
The Thai government has said that any tax paid under a double taxation agreement will be used as credit. My UK pensions and earnings are taxed at 20% far higher than the Thai tax rate so I will not have a Thai tax liability. The double taxation agreement says the tax will always be paid at the higher rate so I'm stuck with that or I would happily pay tax here instead of in the UK. Other countries may not be in the same position. Extract from UK Gov website and extract from PwC accountants Thailand

What you say is mostly true but the original tax regulations have changed. Originally you could bring UNTAXED money onshore tax-free if it was earned in previous years. The amendment to the original tax laws says all UNTAXED money brought onshore is now liable for tax no matter what year it was earned. Thailand, like most countries, has an enormous problem with people earning money online that is not taxed and this was the reason for the amendment to the tax rules. Under double taxation agreements, if you have paid tax on earnings, this will be credited to your tax liability in Thailand. If you don't earn any money in Thailand (investments or work) or bring UNTAXED money onshore then you don't have a tax liability and this is why they have never pushed for expats to file a tax return. If you have no tax liability in Thailand and do not file a tax return, then you have not committed an offence. Tax evasion is the criminal offence you allude to and failing to file a tax return when there is no liability is not an offence. Whether any of this will change going forward we will have to wait and see.

International Driving Permit required?
Jaggg88 replied to sheldoncollier's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
First of all the Embassy websites are often wrong as the UK one says you do need an IDP. Technically you do not need an International Driving Permit if your home country licence has a photo and is in English. However, in reality, you will need one as the police use it as an excuse to fine you and insurance companies use it as an excuse not to pay your claim. -

So if these deaths are not reported as possibly vaccine-related then there is no investigation into the safety of the vaccines -

My mother had a stroke and massive bleed on her brain 12 hours after receiving her Moderna bivalent vaccine. Her doctor and the hospital refused to report her death as vaccine-related. I think that 'small percentage' is much larger than the authorities want to admit. -

Correct. There is no import duty on goods under 1500 baht but they now charge VAT on goods of that amount. China is adversely affecting most countries economy by sending low value goods at below cost value. In the UK I used to buy cables from China that were valued at below one pound and were delivered free. It surely must cost more than £1 to post even a small item from China to the UK

Thailand's COVID-19 Surge Expected to Peak in July
Jaggg88 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
There is a good reason for that. Many qualified professionals and healthcare workers are calling for the ... mRNA vaccines to be banned until the proper research has been carried out. These vaccines were given an emergency licence during the Covid pandemic but now the risk level has dropped dramatically they should be subject to the same stringent testing that all other vaccines are subject to. Reconsideration of afternoon ban on selling alcohol in progress

Absolute rubbish. Factory workers can buy drinks all day long if they wish as it's only mainstream shop chains that follow the rule. The Thai tourism sector has petitioned the government specifically because of tourism - that's what it says in the article. -
Well, although I didn't suggest it I assumed it would be done by his wife. There's no reason to name the school as people will know what school your children go to.

Bangkok Taxi Driver Drags Motorcyclist's Bike for a Kilometre
Jaggg88 replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Seems that Wicharaphon thinks that he, somehow, has the authority to "stop and question" other motorists about their driving! When I first came here 20 years ago, a long-term resident advised me not to get involved with road rage as a minor incident can quickly get out of hand. He told me Thai men have pent-up aggression that becomes uncontrollable when provoked. The motorbike may have been in the taxi's blind spot, we just don't know. We also don't know what was said by the motorbike rider. There is no excuse for the taxi driver's actions but the motorbike rider did shoot himself in the foot all for the sake of a 'nearly' accident.
