This thread has captured all the typical negativity you expect on this forum. You have half the people saying the Thais are useless for not evacuating the tourists - because they don't care about foreigners or are too greedy, and the other half are saying the Thais are pathetic because this "only" has winds of up to 90 kmph and they shouldn't be making such a big deal about it - it's not like "proper" storms in the US. They can't win on TV can they?
They've been issuing warnings for days, ferries and flights have been cancelled, they have provided shelters for those who have chosen to stay, and the army is on standby. Seems like they have got it about right to me.

If I see one more poster writing about queues at BTS ticket machines I'm gunna go postal !!!
Just buy a Rabbit card. The sooner they wipe out cash payments for the BTS & MRT the better. Don't use the BTS often? Doesn't matter. The stored value on your card is valid for two(?) years and can be used in McDonalds, various coffee shops etc. etc. Unless you're some first time tourist, there is no reason to be lining up for tokens, ever.
I'm a great fan of the BTS but to be fair, the system of queueing for coins then queueing again for tickets is ridiculous. Yeah, we all have our Rabbit cards and there is no excuse for people who live here, but for tourists it is horrendous - they can't be expected to know and they may only make one or two trips in the time they are here.
In London you can't even get on a bus now without an Oyster card - there are no other payments options (apart from contactless bank or credit cards) - so you could just do the same here and everyone needs to adapt. But a 100 baht deposit for a Rabbit card is quite a lot for someone who might only be here a couple of days.

There were huge queue's at the ticket machines saphan taksin 4 hours ago. And we were there after waiting in a super long queue at Icon Siam to get the boat to Sathorn pier, had to wait 4 boats before we could board...took 45 minutes so don't go there...
Were there any bird attacks at Saphan Taksin? Did you survive? Hope you didn't get chirruped to death.
Feel free to answer any of the questions you've been asked about those ridiculous claims. Feel free to name the stations that are infested. Feel free to tell us about the station closures that have happened. Any time. We'll just be waiting here.

Maybe from Mo-Chit yes, there are a lot of tourists especially on weekend as many want see the JJ weekend-market.
But on other routes I see about 80% Thai person in the BTS... sometimes even more.
Definitely. How can anyone say the BTS is mostly clogged up with tourists? As you say it is mostly Thai commuters.
Just proves that most of the moaners don't actually use it very often, or base their criticisms on one bad experience and extrapolate that to the entire network.

Evidently. I use the Skytrain daily all up and down Sukhumvit and I have never seen these invasions of birds. Silom is definitely full of birds but we can hardly blame the Skytrain for this. But saying that hundreds of birds live in the stations is just ridiculous, and incorrect.
And I noticed you ignored the bit where I asked you to tell me when the stations were closed due to bird flu. It's never happened and it is one of the most ridiculous claims I have ever read on here.

What on earth are you talking about? Bird flu closing stations? Please tell me one single time anything like that has ever happened.
People making things up about not being able to get on it for several trains at all times of the day is one thing. But the BTS being infested with birds and stations being closed due to bird flu is a whopper I haven't come across before.

There goes the women's waist lines. One of the reasons I used to like it here.

Coming to Thailand soon..
Yes, all Thai women are now going to eat Taco Bell every day.

No it isn't. If the road has two or more lanes in the same direction then you can legally pass on either side.
It's always better if you know what you are talking about BEFORE YOU SHOUT.

What happens when you have no Internet signal.
Why would you need an internet signal? It's an app on your phone that stores your DL information and a QR code. You don't need internet.
And a normal DL is still an option.

What's the advantage? Seems to me like this is just a way for the government to have more of your personal information.
A licence takes less pocket space to carry than a phone.
And. Road safety and carnage reduction should rate much higher than this nonsense !
What's so hard to understand about this for people moaning about how much bigger a phone is than a card.
Nobody is asking you to carry another phone for a DL. It is not a burden. You already have a phone. If you want to you can have a DL app on it. You do not have to. It is not compulsory.
And your last line is straight out the TV textbook. They should not be able to make any improvements to anything at all because road safety is very bad here.

That's great news if it happens.
In the concrete-jungle that is Bangkok it seems such a shame. Although I think that area has only been really developed in the last 60 years or so, I think that house was from the 1920's, originally built by/for a Thai General apparently.
Not really reconstructing it. They are building a replica of it (but using a couple of original bits and pieces). And it is on soi 11 so will have none of that quiet oasis charm.

Good to see this old nonsense trotted out again. Utter nonsense. So, how many times have you been rear ended by a drunk Thai driver and been blamed for it?
It's happened to me twice. Once at high speed and it totalled my car (I was stationary waiting to do a right turn across a major road, he piled into the back of me at great speed). The driver blamed me, said I didn't have any lights on, I wasn't indicating to turn, etc etc. Police interviewed us both, very quickly came down on my side and the Thai was prosecuted.
The second time I have been in an accident here had the same result - the police apportioned blame where it should have been (and it wasn't with me). So please stop spewing nonsense like that because people believe you and then perpetuate the myth. As you said so aptly yourself, "Saying it doesn't make it so", so don't be a hypocrite.
QuoteI had a friend who used to take a walk down a private street right next to his apt building for years then one day some homeowner came after him , after he left the complex with a long bamboo pole and hit him twice with it. He yelled for someone to call the cops and when the cop came he took him to the police dept. The desk cop there told him he could go home if he promised not to walk down the street anymore. He had a concussion and asked to go to the hospital and stated he wanted to make a complaint and had to wait one hour for the tourist police to come. They told him he could make a complaint against the guy who nearly killed him but he would go to jail for 5 years for trespassing. Safe? Not if you are a farong.
So he was trespassing for several years until the guy came to the end of his tether. Obviously wasn't right to attack him but did the police not say he can lay a complaint? Obviously the other guy would lay a counter complaint of trespassing so it would end up in both sides being penalised for their offences. Or you could just drop it all and everyone goes home.
So why did your friend not prosecute?

Bangkok is a big place. Where?
The Marriott soi 2 has day passes to the gym and pool
How much they want to spend?Good point, it is a big place. They are staying on soi 11. They wouldn't mind paying a grand each for somewhere nice.
Just saw the Sofitel do a day pass. Looks nice. https://www.so-sofitel-bangkok.com/offers/sofit-one-day-pass/
I'll check out the Marriot, thanks. Any other suggestions most welcome.

agree about the design and art it contains! and the hotel was certainly an icon.
but I don't agree about age and history... what history did this building see?
I think it took a rocket during the Bangkok protests, but I can't remember any other historical episode of any major significance. maybe you can enlighten me.
Thanks for the belittling reference to "the mall" lol. my parent's home was built 1538. but it's a bit unfair... old Europe, hey.
Dusit Thani is a recent building that won't be remembered in 200 years, sorry.
I don't like disproportionate superlatives and exagerations - check my other post about George Bush Sr.:
Lauding everything in superlatives is not doing anyone a service.
Iconic it may have been seeing as it was once the tallest building in Bangkok. Interiors and artwork are impressive. But other than that, meh. Personally I always found it quite an ugly thing. It looks very much what it is - a concrete building from 1970. It certainly wouldn't be preserved in the UK, nor should it be.

Hi all,
I have a friend coming to Bangkok with his wife for a few days. They are staying somewhere ok but not amazing. They have asked if there are any hotels with nice pools that allow you to pay to access. I have no idea if anyone does this. They would pay just to hang out there for a day by the pool and drink cocktails.
Does anybody know of any?

You're right!! This Samut Prakan extension is very badly connected to the Northern bus Terminal. It also has really difficult connections to loads of other places it goes nowhere near, such as Don Mueang Airport, Rangsit University, and Bang Kachao - they really missed a great tourist opportunity with that one. Typical short sightedness.
You have just proved that no matter what the subject matter, no matter how positive the story, some miserable old git will pop up here with a negative comment. Well done.
(And it's usually people who moan for the sake of moaning - such as people who don't live in Bangkok moaning about the Skytrain, people who don't fly anywhere moaning about the airport)
