What means "ghen chai" in English?
Kreng jai is a Thai concept that lacks a single English equivalent but can be understood as a combination of consideration, deference, and reluctance to impose on others Core meaning: To be considerate of others to the point of sometimes putting their needs before your own.

Kamala Harris Signals Possible 2028 Run: “I Am Not Done”
Projections for 2025 estimate the total US population to be around 347 million, so the adult population would be a proportionally similar number, or over 270 million. And of all these people, candidates for the US presidency end up being just a target for criticism. So who would want such a job? Perhaps in some cases someone with a narcissistic personality... But from all that big pool of people, this is just the best that can be done. It would mean that the best of people simply got a better and more rewarding job than such a presidency, and what it would entail for a normal sensitive individual. But things are getting worse. From Ronald Reagan, who at the least mastered the English language, and used it to make us smile, with his wonderful humor... But now we are at the bottom of the barrel, as the humor is about that kindergarten individual wanting to make a come back. Appears that she is oblivious of how she is perceived... Given my political ideology (the right is right), would be a good thing that she could run again...

Thai Doctor Warns: Too Much Porn May Harm Your Sex Life
Well, I see so many Thai women, in their 30's, not wanting Thai men any more. So many women being left by themselves to care for the child of a Thai genitor. I read, so many years ago, that prostitution in Thailand was the result of men abandoning women. So now women make men pay for it. (sweet revenge). And then foreigners were coming to Thailand to avail themselves of this now available service. So good luck with eliminating or reducing this source of pleasure in this land....

Newborn Baby Abandoned at Pattaya Hotel Dormitory
Yes quite right, a criminal offense. But philosophically, this child is a lucky one. He was allowed to be born. In many other countries, he would have been discarded in the the process of abortion. Just so many ways to prevent birth. Many, including birth control pills. To a point of some views of luck, for the ones who made it.... Perhaps the poster was thinking about the sadness related to extremes where some women, revert to child abandonment. But this woman who abandoned her newly born child, is just not lucky, but in another dimension... Life is not fair.. But those who make laws, they are part of the lucky ones, same as this newly born child. Same luck.

How does one know if one qualifies as a true Intellectual?
Thank you for this post Gamma... I love how you go from philosophy, to the sound of frogs, as when I feel like something else than philosophy for a while, and I listen to music, perhaps not James Brown, but frogs, yes. I just came across some philosophers that strangely have thoughts similar to mine.. I wrote this to my son after listening to these two YT videos.. Peter Boghossian on Critical Thinking, Failing Universities, and Why Debate Matters... Excerpt: " I like thinking, I like thinking about why people believe things, I like..... about ideologies..." "You sent Peter Boghossian on Critical Thinking, Failing Universities, and Why Debate Matters... Excerpt: " I like thinking, I like thinking about why people believe things, I like..... about ideologies..." And strangely, this is what I have been thinking about lately. Why is it that something that appears so clear to me as being the right thing to do, is seen by others as a real bad thing to do....". So take a listen..... And unfortunately, your post raised some vitriol again, from even some members that I thought were above that...

Bangkok Launches Smoking Crackdown to Improve Air Quality
The greatest scam of all times, getting people to experience withdrawal pain from using a product that generates so much money, that any lie is acceptable to keep this going. So the scam is getting users hooking on a very addictive drug, so addictive that it will cause pain when the drug ceases its effect on the body. But no fear, there is a way to reduce this withdrawal pain, just pay more money to inhale more of it to eliminate the pain. But this absence of pain, that I have all the time as a non-smoker, will last only for a short while. So a bit more inhaling, and then this absence of pain for a while is viewed as 'pleasure' but the addicted people. I hear that heroin will have similar effect, stronger as it certainly is.. This is why this drug is for kids, as they re the only people who can fall for this scam, because of their immaturity and lack of experience. We should check how many people already in their 30's, or even their 20's, start smoking. Then the reason for smoking would be described using words not so flattering for these addicted people... So I would think that the alternative to smoking is to breathe just regular air, already polluted, but at least not willfully polluted but adding a known poison. And the alternative to the gruesome pictures on cigarette packs, that do nothing to reduce the number so smokers, how about trying to tell the truth on these packages. "Product for people at an early stage of brain development'', or some variation using even less of a euphemistic wording, which would have a chance of success, in this country where "saving face" is a cultural trait....

Drunk Driver Kills Teen in Sattahip Wrong-Way Crash
I agree with your remarks that kids do drive motorbikes here, responsibly as well, as here it appears to be about the same as riding a bicycle...... The distinction here is that this kid was driving at 1 a.m., should have been at home sleeping, at a time when drunks could also be on the roads

Drunk Driver Kills Teen in Sattahip Wrong-Way Crash
All of this happened in a culture where there is a lot of 'poor parenting', where there is just about not enforcement of traffic laws, and where the punishment for causing a tragedy on the roads carries less punishment than being late on taking care of a permission to stay in Thailand. Poor parenting would statistically have more of a chance of occurrence in this instance... Using "Imagination", to come up with an excuse that would diminish responsibility for an event, should not be a way out of this... What if, what if, and perhaps due to being poor, or any other explanation straight out an imaginary scenario..

The violent right kills again.
Publications NGOs & Funders NGO Monitor > Campaigns of Demonization NGO Atrocity Inversion: False Accusations of Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing to Distract from Hamas Massacre October 23, 2023 On October 7, Hamas and other Gaza-based terror groups perpetrated the world’s deadliest one-day massacre in more than 20 years. The horrific murder, torture, rape, desecration of bodies, and kidnapping of civilians revealed the depravity and evil of Hamas, as well as those who celebrated and justified the slaughter. This posed a challenge for the network of anti-Israel NGOs, many funded by European governments, that try to paint Israel as the worst violator of human rights in the world. In the aftermath of the brutal pogrom, how could Israel continue to be portrayed as worse than Hamas? The solution of these NGOs is to repeat the accusations that Israel is guilty of even more outrageous and extreme international crimes: genocide and ethnic cleansing. The only way to make Israel look worse than Hamas was to allege that it was acting to “eradicate the Palestinian people.” This atrocity inversion – whereby the real crimes of Hamas are projected onto Israel – is a central piece of the demonization campaign, and will play a key role as NGOs and their allies push the UN and ICC to investigate and indict Israelis.

Pattaya Drivers Flout Laws Amid Ongoing Traffic Chaos
Precisely so... The main focus of Traffic police is to collect money. The second focus is to go wash the blood and collect broken vehicle parts on the asphalt after collisions. When I dared to ask why no enforcement is done, I got a hand gesture signifying that the problem would get resolved by itself, somewhere down the roads. I've been here for some 20 years also. And yes I saw the effect of the learning curve, learning that if a driver gets home alive and has not killed anyone, then there was no problem. And the size of the motorcycles have compounded the dangers on the roads. Some 20 years ago, many 100 to 125 c.c. on the roads. Today, kids go to school on 150 to 160 c.c., and so many drivers sitting on 350 c.c., including so many foreigners who come here to join in on the driving mess. When I see a responsible driver on a motorbike of any size, will typically be a long time visitor, at the age of retirement, who has learnt that if you want to survive here, keep the speedometer between 50 and 70 km per hour. Perhaps they do not care much more about others on the road either, but they do care about themselves...

Pattaya Drivers Flout Laws Amid Ongoing Traffic Chaos
"Pattaya's streets will continue as an arena of unpredictable driving, where safety is constantly compromised. ..." They got that right.... "Consequently, traffic laws feel more symbolic than substantial, fostering widespread disregard." What should be expected when traffic police disregard enforcing traffic laws??

The violent right kills again.
Thanks for the comment, as what I wrote was not clear. "******Perhaps it is worth mentioning that a violent left winger tried to kill a right wing politician, very recently as it was... Oh well, not a good idea. Would support the idea of brainwashing..."**** I meant that 'mentioning a narrative of violent left winger tried to kill a right wing politician', would thus appear to support the idea of some brainwashing. But as we are all brainwashed, I did write before that some brainwashing is better than others. But I did not mention it again here, as this is the hearth of the problem. The polarization of ideologies, so a brainwashing of one narrative, that some people like, and a brainwashing of the contrary, as some people would dislike. So the left and the right. Which side is right then, as our beliefs of one or the other is the result of brainwashing. I met a Jewish family at Immigration, and I raised the subject of Israel and Gaza. As he asked me what I thought about it, during a short hesitation for me to answer, he started to say 'It is complicated', and I quickly answered that this was not the question. I told him that I was a Canadian, and in Canada, we are brainwashed to be nice to people. Not for all, but Canadians have a reputation in this domain. And I went on saying that many Arab Palestinians teach their kid to hate... And so I brought up some historical facts about Canada. The 18th century fortress of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island. The on-going fight between the French and the English settlers. And then peace was achieved, creating the Upper Canada, and Lower Canada. The land was shared, and peace was achieved. And nobody in Canada would suggest to hide bombs for many years, to retaliate for fights endured for a few centuries. No such mental process happened, because hate was never part of the upbringing of children, in both parts and culture in Canada. We just decided to live peacefully. The acts of other part of the world are not based on cultural facts, they are based on 'hatred'.

The violent right kills again.
Violent people kill. Starting with killing Charlie Kirk. But I do think that this right wing and left wing dimension should be avoided. Making it political. Brainwashed people kill. Let's start with stopping all this brainwashing. Could get rid of all religions, not needed. But political leaders, no way to get rid of those... Perhaps it is worth mentioning that a violent left winger tried to kill a right wing politician, very recently as it was... Oh well, not a good idea. Would support the idea of brainwashing...

Motorcyclist Killed in Train Collision in Chon Buri
When commenting on this tragedy, keep in mind that it happened in a culture where traffic lights are ignored, zebra crossings are merely spilled white paint on the pavement, speed limits signs are road decorations, double yellow solid lines in the middle of a busy road are there to align the middle of your car right on top of them, and that driving on a road is a contest about who gets to be ahead... The result is that some people will cry the loss of a cherished one. But the culture will keep on....

Obsessed with Bottled Drinking Water in Thailand? Really?
Oh yes, 18.9 liters. But the water that shows no debris in the blender, is Nestle, from stores, clear water, and S.P.A., same bottles as the ones you show in your post.. I think that they do not service Karon. From near Naka market, to Phuket town, and Chalong. No debris in my blender, while even the water at the hospital shows quite a bit of debris. Try the test yourself. Not very complicated, even if some members do not understand how it can be done...

What you should get tested is for the presence of synaptic activity in your brain. Ask for a very sensitive device, capable to detect even minute activity. Please report, after you finished cleaning your toilet...
