I wonder how the Ukrainean footballers of Man Citeh and Everton and other clubs are managing these days.

As a war baby myself, I often remind myself that, without what the Russians did at Stalingrad and afterwards, I (in fact, most people on this platform) would be either doing the Sieg Heil salute these last 75 years or being part of the Resistance in our home countries against the Nazi conquerors. That being said, Putin does not have to actually invade the whole country to more or less get what he wants- -- namely, guarantees (treaty?) from Nato that the latter will not drag Ukraine into Nato.

Excise Dept Says No Plans to Raise Taxes on Alcoholic and Energy Drinks

For this relief, thanks be to Bacchus. Oh wait: maybe there will be a reduction in taxes cos so many falang have left the country it's not worth collecting the tax. Er, no, that's too logical. -
Can Thailand really afford to stop exporting to Russia?
blazes replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
The Russian people have great resilience. If they could resist the onslaught of Hitler at the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942 (which was the most significant event in beginning the defeat of Hitler) and if they could survive all the privations of the Soviet economy, and if they could re-build their economy after the chaos and economic collapse of the Yeltsin years, then a mini-collapse as a result of some delicate sanctions (not including oil to US or gas to Europe!!!) seems survivable. (Oh, I forgot: little Trudeau has just ordered the banning of Russian oil imports to Canada, the fourth largest oil supplier in the world. That should make a difference.) -

The supply of oil globally is tight (hence the high price), but of course Biden has not exactly helped by cutting the Keystone pipeline (from its friendly neighbour Canada) and the moronic Green New Deal has cut off the supplies of the fracking industry. Thank you, Joe.- 145 replies

How about building a replica of Mecca somewhere in LoS? That could attract a few weary travellers post-Haj. Or, better still, maybe negotiate with the Saudis to allow the Thai "Mecca" to be an acceptable alternative to the exhausting real thing. Marching around a rock in temps of 50C takes it out of one.

What is the good news about living in Thailand now?

Canadians bravely suffer their (at least away from the West Coast) abominable winters, but they suffer greatly under their Dear Leader, Kim Il Trudeau. -

I'm still waiting (for many years) for the good news that the ridiculous tax on imported red wine be dropped to something that does not threaten bankruptcy.- 249 replies

Why blame the Russian people for the decisions made in imperial Washington (and its British lackeys like Bojo) to push the limits of Nato right up to the Russian border. (Cuban missiles anyone?). This whole "crisis" has to do with Biden wanting to help his Ukrainean cronies who have enriched the Biden family and of course the usual suspects: Raytheon, Northrup Grumman and other arms' peddlers who have lost a little bit of business after the Afghanistan defeat.

Yes, I have the same routine, except that she says "let me do" about almost any domestic task. -

My wife insisted on being my "barber", so have not spent money in the barber shop for many years. -

Excellent. I could have written this myself!!! One slight caveat: the addiction to cell phones will probably ensure that slowly but surely Thai women will absorb most of the negative traits of the Western woman that you outline so eloquently above. Alas, we live in a global culture. Of course, my wife is different (as we all say) !!!!!!!!! But to be fair to her, she uses her cell phone to scroll through loads and loads of YouTube videos that help her in her career. -

Yes, I guess that kind of job is just hunky-dory as long as you are not a trucker. Can't imagine the trucker's job being farmed out to Thailand any time soon, but I do hear that driverless trucks are being developed.... -
Would you agree now could be the time to buy bricks and mortar again?
blazes replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Absolutely right about foundations. I've often casually stopped (while walking in Chiang Mai) to observe various condos being built and always wonder how they could possibly hope to have a building stay upright when the foundations are so shallow. Especially in an earthquake-prone area like C M.
