  1. I am no expert. I used the link above to test it

    http://www.speedtest.net/

It says it is using Vientiane, so I guess that makes it International?

I am testing from about 10m from the wifi box supplied by AT&T in the house, through 2 walls and I am today getting Down 24.32 and Up 3.21.

I have just run a cable from the wifi box to the lap top and retested and get Down 33.06 Up 3.30

My point is that even at 20 it is 4 times faster than I was getting from 3BB and at half the price.

I have no financial interest in either company, though maybe I should buy some shares in AT&T!

3BB not offering the cable service in my area. Pretty much downtown only at present.

My 13Mbps is fine for what i need anyway. Not launching a rocket to Mars or anything soon.

  2. Try Thai Exports, Baan Tawai, Hang Dong--boss is called John Green--they should be able to sort out the transport of your items from CNX to Spain.

Shipping animals is more complicated since you need various tests on the cats to be completed and the test results accepted by the European country to which the cats will be traveling, and this can take some time; a good vet should be able to give you the info.

EDIT--sorry, just re-read your post and you ask about Airlines that will send animals--as far as I know, most of the recognized carriers will ship animals, a friend of mine sent her cat with Thai Air.

Used this company before, very good. Cant seem to find his number anymore though.

  3. Blame Soloman or Mengrai.

    Their designs are very similar.

The Celtic knot appears on the walls around the 3 Kings monument as well...But that's another story.

Sounds like it would be an interesting story. Going to have a closer look next time I am walking by there.

Actually it's a Celtic knot / cross. As you can clearly see on the pylons. They go all the way around the wall. The two pyramids are also symbolic.

  4. You must be new here. Good job you don't live in Bangkok. Been like this for decades.

I was wondering how long he will last here.

He is attacking an accepted Thai practice that even some of the Farongs are joining in. If you want clear foot paths you are in the wrong country.

I wonder what the next item on his list to westernize is.

Proper drainage? Underground power lines? Driver education programs? Trade schools? Parks? First aid training? Proper queueing procedures? Holding the door open out of courtesy?

Are these "western" or are they the product of a society that uses common sense....

I am here, I am in the right country.

  5. When the town planners were laying out CM do you think they built footpaths for motorbikes to park or were they exclusively for pedestrians. You may need to think about this one

I think the town planners were thinking rickshaws and the occasional ox cart mixed in with pedestrians.

Since the rickshaw did not appear until the late 1800's (1887 in some sources)I don't think the city planners were too bothered by them. I think they were more worried about defence than the movement of locals, tourists and resident farangs. (the last two terms not yet having been invented when Chiang Mai was established).

Lets be positive and look ahead, not backwards!

    Blame Soloman or Mengrai.

    Their designs are very similar.

  6. I don't think this is a case of me seeing through western eyes since pedestrians need footpaths period.

I believe I have found you flaw in your logic... You are not in Kansas anymore Dorothy...

When the town planners were laying out CM do you think they built footpaths for motorbikes to park or were they exclusively for pedestrians. You may need to think about this one

They didn't build them at all. There are none.

It was designed for horse and cart.

Good luck on your noble quest to change Chiang Mai over to a pedestrian friendly town. Hope you have infinite patience.

  7. Long term vision i guess. The store at Kad Farang is going to be a large supermarket compared to the small grocery shop they have now.

It will be great for Hang Dong, save us "southerners" from getting stuck in the grid lock of the towns traffic. Starbucks, Maccas, Rimping, what more can one ask for...

McDonalds, Burger King, KFC a whole host of other foreign products.cheesy.gif

    I was being sarcastic NJ.

And if one thinks they are building these places for farangs one can think again.

    By Thai's for Thai's.

The franchise is a monopoly in Thailand and owned by one family.

  8. Now that's a breakfast...Healthy? Probably not. Happy food? Yeah baby. Just have it with their orange juice to open the arteries back up a bit.

Not sure anyone is forcing you to eat those sausages. As I mentioned, choices are up to the individual. There's also the egg white McMuffin and oatmeal breakfast available in the states! Another thought is not too many people go into McDonalds to lose weight. The original menu stressed the burger, fries and milkshakes. Per my own weakness when I'm back in the states. I've never gone into a Taco Bell looking for a low-cal meal. Give me those double Chalupas or maybe that Mexican pizza!

Who said anyone is forcing me to eat it? I didn't. Please don't twist my words around.

Everything i do is my choice.

  9. This looks more reasonable: a 105 Baht and 93 Satang breakfast.

Not quite the deal Rimping is in that part of town of course where just about everything is in that range (bit less actually), but it's not unreasonable. Although if my kids order anything else like a sandwich or something then I'd be looking at 200+ baht just for that I suppose.

    10584009_1513014315600010_18857281248200

This is no "big boy" breakfast by any means. 2 strips of bacon? C'mon, 3-4 mouthfuls there, 2 eggs, and a piece of toast, and a coffee...

50-60 baht tops. And the 7 % VAT, why? Just show the full price from the beginning, misleading otherwise.

Another place doing a breakfast similar to this is charging 130 baht for 4 pieces of Canadian back bacon, 4 sausages, black pudding, tomato and onion mix, potato hash, 2 eggs, a coffee or a juice. Oh, and 2 thick slices of decent bread.

  10. 3BB are the best option for Hang Dong at present. hang in there, get it sorted. Mine is fine. Could be your connection somewhere. About 9 months ago my connection started getting "spotty" turned out it was a dead bug in some box, somewhere. Or so they said.

Been told the cable won't come unless they get enough signatures from locals. haha, amazing Thailand at work.

  11. I think you misunderstand the subject. You need a Residence Certificate when you buy a Motorbike, Car or in my case, renew a Driving Licence. You go to Immigration, fill out the Form and get it the next day. There is no such thing as a grace period on that one. Officially its free and I think I got it for free one or two times 20 years ago. Since then its been 100B, 200B and from last year 500B. No receipt!.

Never paid for one in nearly 30 years, and no reason why I should start giving them money now. It's always been free.

p.s. your type face is ofensive to the eyes!

    Cranky old goat. haha

  12. I'm not hawking McDonalds but bought into it at 67 three or four years ago when I read they were going to get more aggressive in Asia with many more outlets and a McD's University in China.....also a 3+ percent dividend. It looks like the outlets have increased a lot. How many new McD's have opened in Chiang Mai in the last 4 years? I don't think their coffee is bad and their breakfast McMuffins and egg dishes are also okay. They've tried to expand their customer base with McCafe and tailoring some menu items to the Asian countries. I've also seen them trying to offer a healthier menu in the states with salads and wraps. Recent focus has been on the scandal in China and Russia closing some stores. There's always controversy about Big Macs and some of their other food as not being healthy but I ignore that because "INDIVIDUALS" make their own choices when they go into a restaurant....not just McDonalds! Overall I think their offering enough choices on the menu to eat a relatively healthy meal without throwing down 1500 calories on a Big Mac Meal! That said, do they have room for healthier foods like most other fast food restaurants? YES!!!

With all that said I think it might be a good time to trim some or all of McDonalds from my portfolio. Profits have declined slightly in the first two quarters and frankly, I don't see the news getting "healthier" in the next few quarters. Also, for the record, I haven't had anything from McDonalds in the last 6 months except a few coffee stops.

    Yeah right Ronald.

  13. Many Thais know there are many different kinds of bamboo and they know the properties of each so they can choose an appropriate kind to meet their needed use. It is not just about drying or treatment.

There are more that don't know than do.

The CLC option was if he was after a piece that would last 12-15 years. Untreated 3-7. It's just suggestion, not an order.

  14. If you are after a piece that's been properly treated and use for building purposes then CLC are the folks to see. Mae Hia / Hang Dong-ish.

    http://www.chiangmailifeconstruction.com

Yes it has some nice pieces but they are architecturally prepared and dried and shaped for contract projects. Very expensive aswell.

The op only needs a single length.

Actually from CLC if you continue further on the left there is another timber yard, very big, and this is where I get the 3 4 5 inch bamboo, now that's nice bamboo but can be paying a whopping 50bt a metre for it !

If you ask nicely they may do you a single length.

It will outlast untreated bamboo by 10-15 years.

Depends what you want it for.

Up to you as they say in the classics.

  15. For once, the authorities showed great foresight in planning a hospital near a McDonald's. I can now stuff myself safe in the knowledge that, if necessary, help is nearby.

    Thanks, far-sighted authorities!

    G

Bumrungrad hospital in Bangkok has a Macca's, Starbucks, Pizza company and a bakery all inside the building.

Gotta keep those heart attack machines working. Seize up otherwise.
