  1. Do you have some examples? 1) in state vs out of state university tuition? 2) resident vs non resident for local attractions?
  2. Currently the Thai baht has been on an upward trend ranging from 35.17 to 35.4308 to the US dollar.
  3. Agreed! Why would anyone from Europe, the US, Canada want to go to Thailand during the rainy season in Thailand and the peak of the northern hemisphere summer? On top of that airfare is always higher. November through mid-March? Ok, that is a more conducive time to travel to Thailand while the northern hemisphere is in the midst of winter.
  4. My luk krung son was looking to come over to Thailand in December. Airfare jumped from a high of around $900 to $1350 economy in a matter of weeks. Those are about the cheapest fares around. A lot are in the $1500-$1600 range. A far cry from when they were $600-$750 just a few years ago. Maybe after September the prices will come down some.
  5. I think a few Thai riders are going to have to die before anything starts to get done. Farangs are simply expendable.
  6. Watching the video was a bit unnerving. The farang was very compliant after he was on the beach. He made no attempt to push the long poles away. Never lunged at the advancing police. He easily turned over onto his stomach which you want in order to place the handcuffs on him. It doesn't always go that way. When on the sand it took only one officer to put him in handcuffs. A non-compliant person will take a lot more than one officer to handcuff him. Try 3-5, it's not that easy.
  7. Ah, but were they local Thais or Thai tourists? Not that any Thai or Thai tourist would ever be carrying the dreaded Monkeypox.
  8. Thailand ranking 110 out of 180 puts them a bit on the below average side of things. No surprise there.
  9. I wonder where Mr. Wanchai is getting his information from? Any verified research that concludes tourists could infect the macaques with the virus that causes monkey pox?
  10. I use the A/C on at night but it is set to a low fan speed and at about 26C. I also try to keep the unit from blowing directly on me as it gets too cold.
  11. We did this through the Thai Consulate in Chicago. We made an in person visit. They registered the marriage and sent us copies through the mail. Very easy. Later we also applied in person for Thai passports for our two kids. They arrived a few weeks later in the mail. Much easier than doing any of this in Thailand. This was also 30-35 years ago so it's definitely not current information.
  12. Correct. It's more about xenophobia than anything else. You're either a Thai or you're not. Thais get one price, non-Thais get a much higher price.
  13. Exercise. I still run a little bit and cycle quite a bit at Nong Bon and Skylane. Meet up with friends I've known for years that live here. Always on the look out for a new restaurant. Plan my next trip either in Thailand or another country nearby. Decide how much time I want to spend here or in my home country each year.
  14. Thai roads are pretty dangerous for everyone. People on bicycles are at greater risk. Probably best to stay off of the main roads and use secondary roads with less traffic and lower speeds. Wearing high-vis clothing will help as will flashing lights at all times. Don't cycle at night in traffic.
  15. This topic of dual pricing at National Parks falls more in line with xenophobia and nationalism than straight out racism, although it is a very fine line between them. Xenophobia, the “fear and hatred of strangers or foreigners,” is an unfamiliar term for some. While xenophobia is similar to racism, racism is prejudiced thoughts and discriminatory actions based on differences in race or ethnicity. A person can be both racist and xenophobic. Currently the Thai National Parks practice entrance based upon nationality. You're either a Thai or you are not. Yes, there are cases of Burmese and others getting the Thai price. Easy to do if they don't say a word when approaching the ticket booth. For a foreigner who has Thai citizenship it's a little different. You don't see a lot of westerners that have obtained Thai citizenship but they are here as demonstrated by some of the posts on this thread. The bottom line is that this dual pricing sucks but it is here to stay as the Thai government has no plans to change it.
  16. Well my two luk krung kids both got their degrees abroad. They both worked in Thai restaurants as servers to help finance their education. The work experience was very valuable for them as neither had worked at a paying job before. They didn't have any desire to return to Thailand. They stayed in farang land are doing very well working in tech and commercial real estate.
  17. If you happen to have Thai citizenship, even though you previously had citizenship from a western country and perhaps still do, and look very much like a western tourist make sure you carry your Thai ID with you so you can get in on the Thai price. Otherwise you will be paying the "farang" price.
  18. I don't know about Colorado or Utah, but in California at Disneyland they do have dual pricing but it isn't like in Thailand. If you live in Southern California, let's say Huntington Beach, You can purchase a local pass which gives you a discount to enter Disneyland. If you, from Utah, want to enter you pay the full price as would any other US citizen from any other state or foreign tourists. It's a pass only for the locals of southern California.
  19. Did you even read the links you posted? Here’s the manual’s conclusion: “The ideal choice for the patrol rifle is a semi automatic rifle chambered in 5.56mm or .223 Remington.” It continues, “The two most popular (police service) rifles chambered for this round are the Mini-14 and the many variants of the AR-15. Both rifles have an extensive line of after market accessories and have a proven track record. The Mini-14 may be attractive to those departments that find the AR-15 to (sic) ‘military’ looking.” Go back and watch the entire video that you posted. I know I did days ago. There is an example shown of a semi-automatic AR-15 that the police train with. No mention of full auto because it is a not a good choice in an urban/suburban environment. Full autos are designed for the military battlefield, not for police work which you were advocating earlier. Good Day sir
  20. Thanks for posting this video and proving my point. At no time in the video do we see police officers using an automatic assault rifle. If you listened to former LA police officer Rick Massa in the video he at no time states that they (the LA Police) train or use automatic weapons or automatic assault weapons. He does state that they train with assault rifles and that is very standard. These are semi-automatic assault rifles as shown in the video. The difference between a fully automatic and semi-automatic assault rifle is that when you depress the trigger system on a semi-automatic assault weapon one round is discharged. When the trigger system is depressed on a fully automatic weapon or assault weapon multiple rounds are discharged until the trigger system is deactivated. Better yet, why don't you call up your local US police department and ask them if they use automatic or semi-automatic rifles, assault style or otherwise.
  21. We know that the ones that are fighting are the boys that attend these schools. Do the girls also engage in fighting other girls from rival vocational schools?
  22. My favorite of the Thai beers was Amarit which was popular in the 90's. Sad that it is no longer produced.
  23. "THE THAI AIR FORCE will manage to install its own weapon systems aboard US-made F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters which will be procured in the future, according to air force chief-of-staff ACM Panpakdee Pattanakul." The Thai Air Force will install their own weapon system??? What could possibly go wrong?
  24. Most, if not all law enforcement agencies i.e. City police, County Sheriff, and State police, do NOT use fully automatic weapons. They use semi-automatic firearms. There is a very huge difference between the two.
  25. Kind of a misleading article in regards to Thailand. They mention a number of countries but barely mention Thailand other than taking extended stays in Phuket and Koh Samui.
