  1. Hi,

I am looking for a lets say, shaved your head, live a 1-2 years monks life, learn the thai language and merge into the monkhood kinda lifestyle. Will go google as much as I can.

If the retrets can be somewhat of a semi sponsorship programs for other foreigners to donate to, to upkeep the monk and temples, will be good. Its to build good karma kinda retreat for some rich fellas, and also to calm some minds and start life anew for some other poorer fellas/foreigner will be good.

    VK,

I'm not sure your vision coincides with reality.

"merge into the monkhood kinda lifestyle" (?) " Its to build good karma kinda retreat for some rich fellas" (?)

I guess before I could go any further here, what is your definition of "monkhood kinda lifestyle" as for whatever reason I feel you are glamorizing that a bit.

"retreat for some rich fellas" guess you'll need a golfcourse nearby, no?

You think your target people are ready to give away all possessions, strip down put on an orange robe and wander asking for alms?

I understood in the beginning you had one person that needed help now it sounds like an unrealistic business idea.

Anyway, there are my two satang's worth on the subject.

  2. Dear oh dear. Nearly 30 US for a burger? And the irony is that 'Joe's' is such a poor place. It trades on a location that isn't exactly world class, the seating is poor, the staff are even poorer, and the food/drink prices are the biggest joke you could imagine. 150 baht for a small beer???? It has the reputation of being 'exclusive', and in reality, is nothing more than a down market, 'wannabe' kind of place.which only 'posuer's' could be interested in.

    '

I agree 700thb for a burger? Is that filet mignon on a bun?

  3. Seems that you as much as your friend LivinLOS have some awkward banana comments to this.

And lucky enough to have public water.. what are you talking about. I dont think we are talking a bamboo hut life up on Big Buddha hill. Rather one of the most populated areas on this part of the island.

Since I v never met LivinLOS, he s not my friend. Only in your mind

Here in Tambor Karon not even a third of the houses have public water, wether they cost 1 million or 70 million baht. So we simply envy you and your public watersupply. Even if the water is not perfect, we would all still like to have it supplied at only 10-11 baht m3. Treating it after supplied is inexpensive and simple

You ask for advice on Thai Visa, but dont really want it from posters with water experience. Up to you

OP I think the first mistake is trusting that "a public water" system here in Thailand would work perfectly. As we all know, part of life living here is that nothing works perfectly. Gets real windy, my power goes out, a couple weeks ago I had no trash pickup in my neighborhood for about two weeks as the trash truck was down, etc., etc., etc.

So I think your fellow TV posters have pretty much given you your options. My opinion is, that probably somewhere around you they have been working on the pipes and mud is getting in there, who knows, two weeks from now maybe the work will be done and it will clear up. Amazing Thailand !

Anyway, best of luck with the situation.

  4. yepp, after midnight

during restaurant hours I much prefere Capanina in Kata or M&M in Nai Harn

I with you on Capanina in Kata. I'm not too big on M&M's.

Jimi007 and out to HDRider too as I believe we all live in the same area.

Relatively new place La Cosa Nostra, enter at Patak Villa entrance and he's right on the corner. Patak Villa entrance, Chalong circle toward Kata up 200 meters, left turn.

Had a pizza there two weekends ago, definitely on par with M&M's, not as expensive. Pasta was good too.

  5. Philippines is a mess on every count. It has to be one of the poorest values in Asia.

Don't even waste your time on Philippines. British ministry even warns against any/all travel there. I was told even years back, despite the hype about lovely beaches, Phils has lower tourism than tiny Cambodia with only one real attraction.

I'll disagree here, I think the tourism is more than Cambodia, for sure if you eliminate Siem Riep, and PI is not a waste of time, that's crazy. I'm looking forward to diving with the whale sharks at Sorsogon and also doing some surfing in Northern Luzon.

Bangkokburning, I'd like to know the last time you were there, I have a friend who lives in Cebu who is quite happy there.

  6. What a load of opinionated B.S.

And that's YOUR opinion, as well as your right to express it.

And, by the way, it's easy to sit there and call it "opinionated B.S.", but I don't see you refuting, or disagreeing with the things I have said with any type of intelligent reply?

    Have a nice day! :D

I agree with Ulysses G. there's always an angle, yours is negative, many of us see the glass half full.

    Have a nice day !

  7. Between the Philippines and Vietnam, I've heard some negatives about the level of safety in the Philippines.

Scott I don't mean to bash or cause trouble, but to make a statement like that without ever having been there.................................

It's like when I go back to the states, and people learn I live in Thailand, "oh it's nothing but a bunch of prostitutes, I saw the PBS Special on the tele".

I've been going to the Philippines a couple times a year the last few years, same as everywhere else, level of safety depends on the places and situations.

I can make no comparison as I have never been to VN but would like to go for sure.

  8. I guess most punters didn't have any faith in Paul the octopus who went 6 for 6 on his picks on the German matches. He called the two losses along with their wins.

and now has called Spain for the final, load up punters !

P.S. anyone have the cel number on the lady in the photo? You think Paul the Octopus could predict my success (or failure) there?

  9. Bangkok-Phuket Hospital has a number of plans.

Went there with a Thai girlfriend a few years back, I think I paid about 4,000thb for quite an extensive exam.

    Girlfriend was less.

In the finish up consultation the doctor said three different times in different ways, well Grumpy, "best you get your weight down a bit", then later " it would help if you exercise more, eat and drink a little less", later "you're at 91 kilos, you know you really should be under 85".

Girlfriend on the way out the door "I think the doctor was saying you should lose some weight". Gee really! Thanks sweetheart...................................

  10. The book is aimed at breaking down misconceptions among Muslims and non-Muslims, both in the South and elsewhere in Thailand, he said.

    -----------------------------------------------------

Yes, what misconceptions???? It is deadly clear what is going on in each "infected area".

    Glegolo

Easy you guys, my post was just an attempt at some light humor, lets not turn this into a Muslim bashing thread.

Where we infidels rise above is that we are tolerant of other religions, so lets practice what we preach and allow these people to worship as they wish, and at some point hope they will understand tolerating other religions.

  11. well i was in ao nang yesterday beachfront bar singha small 80 bht yes there are a few bars in ao nang that are up around 120 bht but these are nightclub places just out off interest farang cravings how much are the beers in night clubby places in chang mai i bet about the same.........and you dont get a beautifull beach to look at.............................

and witold comment about krabi town being rundown i think you maybe just to used to the commercialised places off thailand

I agree with you on Krabi Town, I like it better than Ao Nang for sure, definitely a little more of a Thai feeling there than the tourist zone that is Ao Nang.

  12. british and australian troops had an R&R camp on pattaya beach in 1963!! no bars no hotels only a dirt road the first bar and brothel opened in april 1964, it wasnt until 1966 that us troops passing through plucked up the courage to stop, this was yonks before the vietnam debacle kicked off :) have attached a couple of piccies of pattaya beach 63 and 64

Those pics are cool. We should have a thread which is "Pictures of Thailand before 1975" and let those who have them, show them..

  13. 'They're just trying to make A living'...................ahh, drug dealing is OK now is it???

If someone actually buys from them they can then practice the entrepreneurial task of extortion on the premise they'll turn you into their cousins that wear brown uniforms :).

Exactly right, and since the BIB at their regular job don't make so much money, eveningtime they drive tuk-tuks. Nice little side scam, they sell, take the money, then turn in the buyer and get a split of the cash the buyer has to pay to get out of the situation. Double up to make up !

  14. Talk about confusing everybody, these are seperate crimes, and the photo of the cop holding the suspect in the bar hostesses murder, really confuses things.

Guys seated in the photo are accused of murdering a Mr. Witarn, he was hanging out with one of those guy's ex-girlfriend.

Photo cop is holding is the sketch of the suspect wanted in the murder of the Kata bar hostess.

Phuket Gazette "The island's source of misinformation and overpriced real estate".

  15. Another place worth seeing is about 40kms before Ranong, if you look up Wasanas resort Ranong on Google

you can get the details, magnificent scenery and i was told very good beaches , we didnt arrive until after 4pm

and looked for accommodation after 6pm and found it was all booked out by people from the Phillippines.

Its apiece of unspoiled Thailand and we will be returning but booking our accommodation before we go.

There are no bars there but its a great place to go and relax and everyone is friendly .

    Hi Peter,

once off the island how long of a drive is that? Also, you take the road to Khao Lak and just keep going, yes?

  16. Hi VK,

in the health/medicine part of the forum is Channah, they are a sponsor. Although what you describe might not be alcohol-drug related, I'll bet the people there could give you advice anyway, regarding a stress reduction program.

Might be a place to start.

    Best of luck, GOM

  17. WHO: Vuvuela Syndrome is real

Governments must act swiftly to prevent hysteria, officials say

Geneva, Switzerland - World Health Organization officials urged governments on Wednesday to act swiftly to control the spread of Vuvuela Syndrome, warning that the world is in grave danger of a deadly pandemic triggered by the horns at The World Cup matches.

Vuvuela Syndrome is defined as a constant never ending Vuvuela humming in the affected's ears.

The illness has affected 45 people so far, in cases largely traced to watching too much World Cup action while consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, experts have warned the Vuvuela Syndrome could become far worse and become a global pandemic if people continue to watch The World Cup matches while drinking heavily.

"We at WHO believe that the world is now in the gravest possible danger of a pandemic," Dr. Shigeru Omi, the WHO's Western Pacific regional director, said Wednesday.

German Helmut Schmidt a sufferer of the syndrome is quoted " team Germany vil march on to become vorld champions and as a German, this syndrome is a small price to pay for the good of team Germany"

WHO has cautioned that more evidence is needed about how damaging the syndrome is to humans.

  18. Can't help you with the hot springs question, but as far as land, take the road from Hat Napparat to Khlong Muang and there seems to be a ton of land around there.

Not far from both those places and you can swim at either.

  19. That there is a guy looking for a specific place, you have the place for him, and that Thaivisa ends up working for the good of both of you. Thus, TV success story.
no, it didn't, I'm still looking for an apartment in Rawai OR Nai Harn
Yeah but the poster was being helpful anyway, and you are not going to find much at your keyboard, so best hop on over to where you want to be, plenty of places for rent. Nothing wrong with Kata, especially if you have an ocean view.
