Airfare Hike Strands American in Bangkok Airport for 10 Days

An American traveler recently attracted significant online attention after claiming to have spent ten days in Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport due to financial constraints imposed by increased airfares. The man, using the Instagram handle @rastagraphy, shared videos documenting his airport routine, highlighting activities such as watching movies, reading, and eating. This situation arose when he was unable to purchase a ticket for onward travel, allegedly due to higher costs linked to war-related airfare hikes.

The traveler initially flew from Singapore to Thailand on March 15 but was denied entry by immigration officers. Police Major General Kathathorn Khamthiang explained that the man appeared unprepared and not typical of a tourist. Under airline regulations, the carrier responsible for transporting the passenger to Thailand was tasked with managing his care and facilitating an onward journey. The ultimate goal was his return to a Southeast Asian country as part of a planned route back home, unrelated to any active conflict zones.

Reports indicate the traveler departed Thailand on March 21 after the situation attracted media coverage. Kathathorn emphasized that immigration's role concluded with the denial of entry and shifted responsibility to the airline for arranging his departure. Despite the unusual circumstances, the airline reportedly fulfilled its obligations by ensuring the man’s basic needs were met throughout his prolonged stay at the airport.

Kathathorn further commented on the situation, suggesting the man’s posts might have been designed as content creation to gain views or elicit donations by generating public sympathy. He cautioned against the public falling for sensationalist narratives or being manipulated by such tactics, emphasizing the importance of discernment in consuming online content, reported The Thaiger.

This guy should be thrown into prison. There should be zero tolerance for americans who cannot afford to travel. There bore us with capitalism is great, and only apply it when it suits them.

Strange story...Not clear why he was refused, only he did not look like a tourist and not prepared, is bit vague.

Same for no money... How would he spend here with no money??? He came from Singapore.where and how did he live there??

Well I am more inclined to say the USA Embassy should help him out, because the US have caused much of this mess! Put a few red thumbs down on THAT!

I share some of your view " there should be zero tolerance for Americans who cannot afford to travel " poor statement more bashing on American you being bias concluding a dislike?

The statement should be for everyone and anyone! I'm an American, and prior to reading your statement was going to respond to my American brother " get me a fking crying towel "

Here there are more Brits doing go me funds that any other country including America! and when they not it seems they are in jail for being in a drunken brawl?🤣

Immigration did the right thing this time it is the airline responsibility!

Waiting 10 days in an airport is like torture.

Couldn't imagine being stuck in an airport for 10 days, have had 24 hour delays a couple of times in Dubai but the airline put us up in a hotel so it was like having a mini break in the middle of the travel.

I've got a 7 hour transit time in Beijing (PEK) next Tuesday & am already climbing the walls thinking about being stuck in an airport that long - Trying not to get hammered in the lounge is top of my list :)

His president started this war, he and many other US nationals now have to pay for the consequences.
So do we, by the way.

For one thing, apparently he didn't have an ongoing ticket which leads to the question why he was allowed to board in the first place as most airlines strictly enforce the ongoing ticket rule. Clearly they are paying the price for their error by having to support him and provide an ongoing flight. I thought the rules were it had to be to his home country but perhaps not.

There's me thinking it's bad enough spending a few hours waiting in a airport for a flight out

Looking at this guy first impression can he afford to stay in Thailand

Maybe that's what immigration thought as well

Hey dude, next time do not travel if you cannot afford to travel.

No way will I support More Runs who fly half way around the world without any backup plans for emergencies.

Regardless of the war, this more run traveled to this part of the world, when he knew he had no emergency funds. No sympathy for stupidity. None!

either immigration (again) didn't do its job (making sure the guy had onward travel), or he faked his onward travel with he entered the country.

He didn't enter the country (was denied immigration clearance) & it's the airline's job to check he has an onward ticket before letting him check-in.

I've flown from Changi 100's of times, I'd say approx. 15-20 times on a 1-way ticket and have always been challenged at the airline check-in desk if I didn't have a return ticket. Every time bar 1 I had a flight back, the 1 time I did'nt I showed a letter from IRAS confirming I'd paid my Exit Tax & was leaving Singapore + a job offer that showed I was coming back at some yet to be confirmed date in the near future & after a chat with a supervisor they let me check-in.

Also got stopped at DMK when we had 1-way tickets to Penang, we hadn't decided if we were going to spend 4 weeks in Penang or go elsewhere in Malaysia and maybe even come back via boat from Langkawi, fortunately we decided we were going to come back from Penang so I'd booked 1-way flights back a couple of days before, otherwise I don't think they would have let us check-in.

Long winded route for a bit of Brit Bashing!

Can you put any meat on those bones? What are the source(s) for your stats? Do GFM provide National by National figures for requests?

(Just counting the number of mentions on AN doesn’t qualify. )

Just as a side issue, if Mother Theresa style philanthropic cretins wish to donate their hard earned ackers to someone they have probably never met, then I will have my typewriter at the ready when I fall off mi bike.

Thos has nothing to do with the war trump being American and especially cost of flight. The guy got refused entry there are many reasons not just no hotel, no plan and no onward ticket.

Immigration refused him entry leaving it up to the airline that brought him to take him back to Singapore. The airline is responsible for him . He is lucky that immigration did not provide him meals and accommodate him

Oh that's a change, normally the idiots on this blog throw such comments at the British for some reason, it is nice to know they are not at all racists seeing as they are also abusive towards other nationalities en masse.😀

How lucky for you that you don't come from a country burdened by capitalism. Let me guess - you're a communist? A fascist? Hitler was your buddy and Putin's your daddy? It's such a shame that those nasty American people "bore" you with their praise of their "capitalist" system. I know how you feel. As an American, all of my working class neighbors who are suffering economically with unaffordable housing and lack of health care are truly boring as they express their love of capitalism under the current administration. Please tell us how we can all be more like you. Oh PLEASE do! Now could you translate your comment, explain how it pertains in any way to the story, especially with your small minded attitude toward other cultures - you see, most of us do not speak your native language, gibberish in the dialect of ignorance. Google can't translate gibberish.

Now here's a piece of enlightenment in case you might shoehorn it into your tiny mind - I don't think anyone in the world besides the wealthy and powerful who benefit from it think capitalism is great. I haven't heard anything like that since the Bush administration - could you tell us where you heard it (And the voices in your head don't count)? And here's a BIG one - ready? Take a deep breath: Opportunistic whiny wanna be tiktok stars come in all nationalities. Yup, it's true. You'd know that if you made even the most meager attempt at educating yourself. Do try, won't you? Good luck with your higher education. Now in the mean time we hope you don't have a bad experience with a Thai person, then we'll have to read your subsequent list of everything wrong with Thai people, and we've already heard too much from you.

It's about time entry to Thailand required $40k in ready cash in the event of accident or unforeseen emergency such as this. After all, it's what us retirees have to keep in the bank to guarantee our stay here.

Lol - years ago, I 'lived' at Heathrow Airport for 4 days while trying to return to Bangkok after attending my dad's funeral. Money was tight for me in those days and so I took (what I thought) was enough cash to pay for the return ticket (since I did not know how long I would have to stay in the UK).

Alas!, plane tickets were more expensive from London to Bangkok than Bangkok to London! The only ticket that I could afford was Egypt Air via Cairo, leaving 5 days later. So I spent some time at the airport terminal, with a few quid to buy water and a little food.

On the second day, the patrolling police asked me what I was doing, and kindly allowed me to stay in the warm terminal building since there was snow outside and it was bitterly cold.

Airport seating is not designed for a comfortable night's rest :)

Just one of life's experiences.... (I didn't vlog about it!)
