An American traveler recently attracted significant online attention after claiming to have spent ten days in Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport due to financial constraints imposed by increased airfares. The man, using the Instagram handle @rastagraphy, shared videos documenting his airport routine, highlighting activities such as watching movies, reading, and eating. This situation arose when he was unable to purchase a ticket for onward travel, allegedly due to higher costs linked to war-related airfare hikes.

The traveler initially flew from Singapore to Thailand on March 15 but was denied entry by immigration officers. Police Major General Kathathorn Khamthiang explained that the man appeared unprepared and not typical of a tourist. Under airline regulations, the carrier responsible for transporting the passenger to Thailand was tasked with managing his care and facilitating an onward journey. The ultimate goal was his return to a Southeast Asian country as part of a planned route back home, unrelated to any active conflict zones.

Reports indicate the traveler departed Thailand on March 21 after the situation attracted media coverage. Kathathorn emphasized that immigration's role concluded with the denial of entry and shifted responsibility to the airline for arranging his departure. Despite the unusual circumstances, the airline reportedly fulfilled its obligations by ensuring the man’s basic needs were met throughout his prolonged stay at the airport.

Kathathorn further commented on the situation, suggesting the man’s posts might have been designed as content creation to gain views or elicit donations by generating public sympathy. He cautioned against the public falling for sensationalist narratives or being manipulated by such tactics, emphasizing the importance of discernment in consuming online content, reported The Thaiger.

Waiting 10 days in an airport is like torture.

Couldn't imagine being stuck in an airport for 10 days, have had 24 hour delays a couple of times in Dubai but the airline put us up in a hotel so it was like having a mini break in the middle of the travel.

I've got a 7 hour transit time in Beijing (PEK) next Tuesday & am already climbing the walls thinking about being stuck in an airport that long - Trying not to get hammered in the lounge is top of my list :)

For one thing, apparently he didn't have an ongoing ticket which leads to the question why he was allowed to board in the first place as most airlines strictly enforce the ongoing ticket rule. Clearly they are paying the price for their error by having to support him and provide an ongoing flight. I thought the rules were it had to be to his home country but perhaps not.

He didn't enter the country (was denied immigration clearance) & it's the airline's job to check he has an onward ticket before letting him check-in.

I've flown from Changi 100's of times, I'd say approx. 15-20 times on a 1-way ticket and have always been challenged at the airline check-in desk if I didn't have a return ticket. Every time bar 1 I had a flight back, the 1 time I did'nt I showed a letter from IRAS confirming I'd paid my Exit Tax & was leaving Singapore + a job offer that showed I was coming back at some yet to be confirmed date in the near future & after a chat with a supervisor they let me check-in.

Also got stopped at DMK when we had 1-way tickets to Penang, we hadn't decided if we were going to spend 4 weeks in Penang or go elsewhere in Malaysia and maybe even come back via boat from Langkawi, fortunately we decided we were going to come back from Penang so I'd booked 1-way flights back a couple of days before, otherwise I don't think they would have let us check-in.

Thos has nothing to do with the war trump being American and especially cost of flight. The guy got refused entry there are many reasons not just no hotel, no plan and no onward ticket.

Immigration refused him entry leaving it up to the airline that brought him to take him back to Singapore. The airline is responsible for him . He is lucky that immigration did not provide him meals and accommodate him
