Thailand's Transport Co, known as BKS, will launch a daily cross-border bus route between Udon Thani, Udon Thani International Airport and Vientiane on 9 September.
The 87-kilometre Route No 2 service will operate once each way daily, using 40-seat, second-class air-conditioned buses. Tickets will cost 80 baht per journey.
The new service is intended to give passengers landing at Udon Thani airport a direct onward connection to the Lao capital, removing the need for several transfers.
Daily timetable and stops
The Thailand-bound service will begin at Udon Thani Bus Terminal 1 at 9am. It is scheduled to call at Udon Thani International Airport at 9.30am before arriving in Vientiane at noon.
The return journey will leave Vientiane at 2pm, reach Udon Thani International Airport at 4.30pm and arrive at Udon Thani Bus Terminal 1 at 5pm.
A low-cost Laos connection
For foreign residents, tourists and other travellers in northeast Thailand, the route offers a comparatively inexpensive option for reaching Vientiane from Udon Thani airport. At 80 baht, it may be particularly useful for those arriving on domestic flights and heading directly to Laos rather than arranging separate transport to the border or Vientiane.
Passengers using the service for an international journey will still need to ensure they have the necessary passport, Lao entry permission and any documents required for their onward travel. The bus route itself does not alter immigration or visa requirements.
The airport stop should make the new route more straightforward for travellers carrying luggage, compared with changing vehicles after arriving in Udon Thani.
