British Tourist Attacks Thai Officer, Gets Restrained

A video showing a British tourist attacking a Thai police officer inside a 7-Eleven store has surfaced online, quickly drawing attention. The footage, shared by social media user @JamesPGoddard90, depicts the British national forcing the officer to the ground and punching him, as store staff and another foreigner attempt to intervene.

The incident was widely circulated without an official statement clarifying the cause or outcome. The altercation escalated with a store employee restraining the British man by the neck, before the officer regained control, wrestling him to the ground. The video ends amid the struggle, creating widespread speculation and concern online.

This episode highlights broader issues of foreign conduct in Thailand. Under Thai law, using force against an officer can result in severe penalties, including prison time and fines. The tourist may face charges under Sections 138 and 295 of Thailand’s Criminal Law, potentially leading to a combined sentence of up to four years and fines totaling 80,000 baht.

The online reaction has been swift, with many condemning the tourist's actions, noting such behavior tarnishes the reputation of Britons abroad. Experts note this incident could strain diplomatic relations and affect tourism, especially as Thailand welcomes international visitors post-pandemic. Calls for an official response are growing as the video continues to circulate.

Looking forward, authorities are expected to issue statements clarifying the events and any charges filed against the tourist. This incident may influence future legal and social policies regarding foreign nationals in Thailand, prompting a review of diplomatic guidance on traveler conduct, reported The Thaiger.

Even in the unlikely event the cop provoked the situation, you gotta be out of your tree to chin him. I can imagine the retribution back at the station would have been swift and without mercy, and not one to one!

Last year I seen it first hand in the foyer of my condo in Na Klua. A tall asian guy, maybe "Korean" went right off his head. probaly drugged up. The female office manager tried to intervene and he threw a heavy fist at her, luckily for her it missed. I told her to ring the cops, one arrived 20 minutes later, he was that young looking he could've been on work experience. The "Korean" guy punched him in the face and the young cop bled freely. Next thing the calvary arrived, all tooled up like a terrorist squad. The 4 cops tackled him, lifted him up and drove his head into the tiled floor. Then they picked him up and threw him down the stairs head first. He was then shackled in a crucifix position in the back of the cops pick up and the vehicle sped away. I never heard anymore about this but I'm sure he got a savage beating when they got him back into a police cell. This happened around 8 am in the morning, which was strange as most of these dramas usually happen later in the night or early morning.

Not trying to defend the UK guy in anyway as he was a complete idiot for getting into that situation with a Thai Police officer (especially one that was bigger than him!) but he had surrended before the Thai police man decided he was going to choke him out.

There was no need for that.

As a former law enforcement officer....Yes, there was a need:

There is no mention if there were other cops there other than the one you see.

So I am on the cop's side of course but if he was alone and had already been assaulted by this moron, I would have done the same thing, detain / hold him using a controlled restraint move / any way whatsoever until his backup arrives.

For the technical term we used (and he used here), it's called a Lateral vascular neck restraint (LVNR).

Well done copper!!

Does anyone here know what started this?

The cops actions after he had him under control were laughable.

Done by a man who had lost face.

Sure the Brit was wrong but it looked like retaliation to me.

He did good though,din he?

Obviously Thailand needs you back as soon as possible.

It’s gone to pot since you left.

No. No it doesn't. The RTP are world class experts in the de-escalation of potentially violent situations. So much so, their first response is typically not to show up at all.

Fair point !

The cop was literally being chocked. The guy most likely intoxicated and who knows what else ... you expect the cop just to calm him down when he lets go, shake hands and walk off?

In America the guy would have been shot. Here the police guy had to restrain him incase he kicked off again.

You can see the Benidorm Brits sticking up for the guy here - this is the behaviour they would applaud.

Can only wish an end to marijuana laws, so the Benidorm lot (and mules) can go back to their Bendorms, Magaluf and Ibizas and trash those places instead.

Another "top quality" Western tourist, so highly desired by the regular posters on this website.

If he'd been Indian (read Indian sub-continent, case Pakis, Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans all look similar) / Chinese, OMG - you'd have seen all the negative comments.

I doubt it but am sure that he would sue the Officer/PD for assult and (on the basis of the little video evidence we've seen) win, irrespective of his earlier actions.

One difference, this is Thailand and not Kansas.
