German tenant sought after Krabi rental home wrecked

Police in Krabi are searching for a 27-year-old German man after a rented house was found extensively damaged, with the owner estimating losses as high as 500,000 baht.

The man, identified by the owner as Mr Enderes, had rented the property in Villa Maharaj village on Maharaj Road, within Krabi town municipality, for four months. Police said they were seeking to prevent him leaving Thailand while they investigate.

Damage found across both floors

At about 5.30pm on 25 August, Pol Lt Charnwit Jamsai, an investigating officer at Krabi City Police Station, was called to the home by owner Pattaralada.

She told officers that a foreign tenant had allegedly smashed furniture, household items, electrical appliances, walls, room doors and window panes throughout the house. Broken glass and debris were scattered over the ground and first floors.

Police investigators who attended the property also found a strong smell of cannabis in an upstairs bedroom. Cannabis-use equipment, which had also been broken, was found in the room, along with a box of shotgun cartridges in a wardrobe.

Pattaralada said neighbouring residents had reported hearing loud smashing sounds from the house over the previous two days. She had tried to contact the German tenant by telephone but received no reply.

Concerned for his safety, she went to inspect the property on 25 August. The house was locked and the tenant was absent, although a motorcycle was parked outside. After seeing several damaged windows, she used a spare key to enter.

Village security staff reportedly told her that they had seen the man walking out of the development around midday.

Police ask Immigration to act

Police collected evidence at the house and said they had contacted Immigration police to have the man's passport blocked, amid concerns that he might leave the country. Officers are continuing efforts to locate him and bring legal action.

The motive has not been confirmed. Police said they suspected the man may have used drugs and suffered hallucinations or an agitated state, citing the smell of drugs inside the property.

Surely she held a significant bond from the renter? And insurance against damage???

2 or 3 times the monthly rent, would be the norm.

Insurance, unlikely in Thailand.

If you read the article, it would appear that there was no deposit issue.

The reporting indicates that the lease was still ongoing.

Ah, yes. my bad.

Not so sure about that.

What would happen, if it was a falangs home rented to a Thai and it got trashed.

Who knows, you don't!

The news report is about a tenant going on a smashing spree in a house he rented.

Most of you go off on your own ridiculous detective stories.

And you really have no idea as to what happened.

Okay, I don't know why he did it and we are all just guessing.

But here are a few facts:

  1. Most Thai (and maybe farang owners/lanlords) insist on a 2 month deposit and usually minimum one year lease. Well, actually, the law states a ONE MONTH deposit is maximum. But like so many things here, follow-the-leader is the norm, and the authorities never intervene to uphold the maximum deposit rule;

  2. The Thai landlord who rents to a foreigner assumes the foreigner will be leaving the country soon, so some make up fake excuses why the deposit will not be refunded - expecting the foreign renter to give up when time runs out and they must leave Thailand;

  3. The landlord, by Thai law, can only withhold part of the deposit to get things fixed that the tenant damaged (not wear and tear) and must provide estimates and final receipts for work completed. The repair can only restore the damage to what it was like when the tenant arrived and not use it to make things all brand new;

  4. The landlord - depending on their connections - may hold out even if the foreigner is not leaving Thailand. But if they are not a hi-so, the tenant has a reasonable chance of getting a court ruling in their favor for a return of most of the deposit (collecting it is another matter).

  5. Given the above, some renters - who have been unfairly refused a return of their deposit - take things into their own hands. In that scenario, who can really blame them. But it's a dangerous game. If caught they lose more than the deposit.

Funny, I smoked some cannabis this morning but actually cleaned up around the house.

My medicine seemed to have the opposite effect. 😎

Should have helped a brother out and cleaned up this house.

there is no suggestion at all that cannabis use is responsible for this

I think this is a ruddy huge suggestion with the smell already having been attributed to cannabis.

"Facts"?

  1. "Most", "usually minimum"?

  2. Nothing here was even factual

  3. Appears to meet the criteria

  4. "may hold out", "reasonable chance"

  5. "unfairly refused" and the entirety of the last 2 sentences.

Bravo!

Except that cannabis does not create an agitated state or hallucinations its the most ridiculous suggestion I have ever heard. How many other trashed rooms have been reported since the legalisation of cannabis ?

I wouldn't agree or disagree with that (I honestly don't know), but that's definitely what is being suggested which you denied.

I put the question to AI...

Yes, cannabis can produce agitation and hallucinations, particularly at high doses, with potent THC concentrations, or in susceptible individuals.

So which is true?

Speaking from personal experience, not just my own but that of everybody I know, and of everybody they know (that's a lot of people) AI is yet again talking rubbish.

The more I see and hear from AI the less confidence I have in it .

Ai doesn't "know" anything, it is nothing more than a glorified search engine, "Ai says " is no better than "I read it online / in the papers " I am very wary of anything AI "tells" us

Reefer madness continues to infect many people, from the "man in the street" to government ministers and even some "medical professionals" and this naturally influences what gets posted online,

So, try this , using a normal search engine like google , ask any so called factual website about the effects of cannabis, and 99 times out of 100 only the alleged negative effects will be reported , never are positive side effects mentioned, Never do they mention "a pleasant feeling of relaxation" or any other enjoyable side effects .

That is where AI gets its info from. Go ahead give it a try yourself,

You will see the effects of cannabis listed as :-Paranoia , Nausea, Hallucinations, Aggression (really?) Schizophrenia etc etc .Now ask yourself, If this was true, would anybody ever bother smoking it ? Its almost as if there was a narrative being followed.

Those who simply enjoy the effects of cannabis are not inclined to endlessly post online about it , however there are many who have never smoked it, who, as part of some "crusade" endlessly post negatively about it

Take a look at the threads in the cannabis forum on this website , you'll see what I mean about a very badly informed yet very vocal minority,

I suggest taking most of what AI says about anything "with a pinch of salt "

The smell of cannabis both in its raw state , or the smoke from it is very very distinctive, and easily identified. Deciding that cannabis is "responsible" for the trashing of the house is a completely different matter,

Had the house smelt of coffee would caffeine had been blamed ?

Does methamphetamine leave a strong smell ? no it does not , so the culprits could just have easily have been intoxicated with "ya-ba" which would be far more likely to cause such behaviour , as would alcohol, Try to think for yourself in future

I'm a part time smoker, all of it when I visit family back home, and have been since I was 17. I've also known hundreds of fellow smokers, and never have I seen nor heard of anyone going off after or being a pot smoker.

Cocaine and meth, definitely. Alcohol of course. That the room smelled of weed doesn't take away the possibility of him drinking or doing other drugs.

Opinions mean little, but this was likely about money. Him possibly not getting his deposit back, so he decided to get even, and if he was smart, left the country as son as he was done. if he is a drinker and had a bender, it could mean he's still around renting and will be found as soon as he places his passport down.

So did they catch him or has he left Thailand. If he's still here it should be easy for police to call him in.
