New Zealander held in Surat Thani over watch theft

An 18-year-old New Zealander has been detained in Surat Thani after allegedly taking a watch left in a security tray at the city's airport. His family said he was expected to seek bail onJuly 21, after his initial application was refused over his visa status.

Loukas Rainger, from Tauranga, had been travelling in Thailand for a month with a friend on his first overseas trip. He was due to fly home via Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok on Thursday 16 July 2026, when immigration officers stopped him, his mother Natasha Rainger stated..

She said her son was told there was an arrest warrant linked to an incident at Surat Thani airport about two weeks earlier.

Arrest and transfer back to Surat Thani

According to Natasha Rainger, Loukas said he picked up a watch that had been left on the tray alongside his luggage during a security bag check.

"He was told by immigration that there was a warrant out for his arrest," she said. Loukas reportedly told his mother he was "completely confused" by what had happened and said he had "just picked it up too".

Natasha said police removed him from the airport, retrieved his checked luggage before it reached the aircraft, and held him overnight at Bangkok police station. He was then handcuffed for several hours on a train journey back to Surat Thani, where he was questioned and has remained in custody.

New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was assisting the family of a New Zealander in Thailand, but gave no further details for privacy reasons.

Lawyer seeks visa change and bail

Werabhat Hemthansarp, managing partner at Phuket law firm Lawyer Republic and Rainger's representative, told Stuff the teenager had been charged with "theft at an airport".

"It is more serious than normal theft because it happened at an airport," Hemthansarp said.

The lawyer said he was working to change Rainger's visa so that he could apply for bail, while also arranging a US$1,000 compensation payment to the watch's owner. Bail was expected to be approved within 24 hours.

Natasha said her son had apologised to the owner from prison and was told that she accepted the apology and would accept the payment. She said he had not acted maliciously, describing him as inexperienced and unwell after a long boat trip shortly before the alleged incident.

For foreign visitors, the case is a reminder that an allegation made during a domestic airport transit can still lead to detention, an arrest warrant and travel being stopped at another Thai airport. Visa status can also affect bail arrangements, making prompt help from an embassy and a Thai lawyer important if someone is detained.

Rainger had recently left school and was travelling before starting an electrical apprenticeship, his mother said. Natasha, who is in Bangkok after surgery, said her own visa was due to expire in mid-August, while his father Mark remained in Tauranga with Loukas' younger brother.
