Didn’t the police have access to his TDAC or TM30 information which give accommodation details? Why do we bother to give this information if no one uses it?

Absolutely, with facial recognition software that they have it should not be too difficult to figure this out!

Me too. They are usually readily available at check in.

How did they know he was a Brit ? .... oops sorry .... they must have seen is neck tattoo ... durrr.

My approach as well- and it has saved me before now on several occasions in foreign place!

As already mentioned, google maps and drop a pin.

These days most bookings are made online and one would think that he would have had that information on his smartphone. And if not one would have hoped he would have had the common sense to pick up a card to keep in his pocket. Especially if he's semi senile or suffers from memory issues.

Not to sound critical of the guy, but these seem like fairly basic survival instincts.

I do the exact same thing. One for my wife and one for myself, just to be sure.

Just to take a SWAG at the reason. Maybe??? Checked in drunk, went on a bender, wakes up on the sidewalk and realizes he has not idea where his hotel is.

I remember when I was about 20 I was crawling over a speed bump in the road. Trying to figure out where I parked my car... Like to have never got over the speed bump, and never did find the car that night.

The Tourist Police are a worthy venture both in Bangkok and Pattaya. Yeah, they rescued me from Patpong yonks ago!

Many years ago I couldn’t figure out how to get back to my hotel in Hanoi. No problem, I thought, I’ll just jump into a taxi and tell the driver to take me to the Lucky Hotel. Only thing was that there were several establishments of that name in the city.

Been there done that - Boys trip in Prague, I didn't book the hotel.

Beers on flight - dropped of baggage - straight out to sample the local beers.

Homing beacon switched on - walked back to the hotel by which time I realised I didn't know where I was staying.

Luckily, found it in the end.

Same with actual room number - I never carry the card sleeve out - figuring if I loose that with the card in anyone can enter the room.... but I stay in so many hotels and I've checked in so late or tired off a flight etc... when I get up early go out, work all day etc then get back and realise "damn...what floor was it?"... I've learned to take a photo of my room number to avoid the embarrassing question of asking the front desk what room I'm staying in !!!

When you're in hotel so regularly - they can often blend into one.

This fella likely did something similar - checked in boozed up - and simply forgot.

Or, there may have been a mental health issue - anyone who tattoos 'England' on the back of their neck surely faces some sort of stunted mental development.

It could work if 'tracking history' is no - but if someone is in such a state they can't remember their hotel - they're not in a state to use google maps to track previous history.

Now - how many of us have forgotten where we parked the car in a massive multi-story carpark ?

So the embassy confirmed he has the required documentation for onward travel to the UK. Very useful. But did anyone actually find his hotel?

Or take a screenshot of the hotel on google maps or take a photo of the hotel. Google maps saves the searches you do anyway. The guy must be real thick. THICK be a good tattoo for him
