Russian men flee war to work Pattaya's strip bars

The Sun has reported that young Russian men working in Pattaya's nightlife district say they left home partly because they fear being called up to fight in Ukraine.

The newspaper spoke to Sam, 23, from Moscow, and Ilya, 25, from St Petersburg, at a club on Walking Street. Both said they preferred work in Pattaya to the prospect of military service in Russia.

Sam, who had arrived in Pattaya three weeks earlier after first going to Bangkok, performs as a pole dancer at the venue. He said people his age were frightened they could be sent to fight and said he had buried friends and relatives during the war.

"Everything is so hard back home and every one of my age is terrified that they will be sent to fight," Sam told The Sun. He said he believed the conflict would not end until 2034, without explaining why he expected it to last that long.

Work and life on Walking Street

The Big Tool club is on Walking Street, at the centre of Pattaya's extensive red-light district. The venue employs men and women, and attracts male and female customers, according to the newspaper.

Sam said customers could buy drinks from a menu with prices reaching 1,390 baht. Ilya said he worked six days a week, with the club open until 3.30am, and offered hotel visits for 10,000 baht.

Commercial sex remains illegal in Thailand, even though nightlife and entertainment venues are highly visible in Pattaya and other tourist areas. Visitors and foreign residents should be aware that the law can be enforced, and that arrangements made through bars can carry legal, financial and personal-safety risks.

Ilya told the newspaper that Russia had changed sharply in recent years, claiming there was now "no money, no work and no hope". He said he would "definitely have to join the army" if he returned home, and added that he valued the freedom to be himself in Pattaya.

Yana, 26, a dancer from Vladivostok, told The Sun that many men at the club were from Russia or Turkey. She said Russian men would rather be in Thailand than risk ending up in the army and then at the front.

Thailand's growing Russian community

Russia last ordered a major mobilisation in September 2022, calling up 300,000 reservists after battlefield setbacks. The Sun said Moscow has since relied on recruitment incentives, particularly in poorer regions, while dismissing rumours of another imminent call-up.

The report cited Ukraine's claim that Russia is suffering around 1,000 casualties a day, while stating that Russia is desperate to replace losses. It also said that, in the four months shortly after the war began, 233,000 Russians arrived in Phuket, according to the local airport.

Sam summed up his decision simply: "Why would I want to join the army and fight and die when I can be in Pattaya having fun?"

Draft dodging isn't just a thing with Russians today.

Remember the Vietnam War.

My mother, b.1935, used to talk about how many civilian men 'disappeared' during WW2. I expect that many were dodging the draft, and probably quite a few ended up in Australia, Canada etc.

Regardless if they are Russians, Ukrainians, Poles, Kazakhstanis, Uzbekistanis, they are violating the Thai immigration law. They are not allowed to work in Thailand and must be deported back to their home countries.

Well let’s see if Mr Anutin has time to. He’s a very busy man at the moment deporting Israelis and French.

I once walked past boyzone and saw loads of people outside looking and laughing. So I nosied up too, inside was a table of 4 Russian ladies throwing money at the boys dancing. They were really drunk but it was funny. It should have been in a film, The Russian Full Monty !

I think the point is, most people in Thailand would much rather they were fertilising Ukrainian Sunflowers, than being criminals in Thailand.

So you would rather they were dead? Going back to Russia will equal death in Ukraine.

"Hi Ivan, welcome home, long time no see, how was your holiday in Thailand?"

"Horrible, the first few days were fine, but then my credit card stopped working

and I couldn't pay for drinks and the bar-girls kept ignoring me, said I was sticky"

"Sorry to hear that, well, I have good news about Ukraine. The army is winning

the fight against the neo-Nazis who were threatening to invade us and take over."

"Are you kidding? I've been watching the war on Thai news and other channels

like CNN and Fox, and we are getting our butts kicked by every man, woman and

peasant who is taking up arms against us. I saw an English-language newspaper

that said tank commanders were deserting their vehicles and surrendering."

"But I just saw the bulletin on State TV that the president of Ukraine had been

killed, and the government had capitulated!

"Not a bit of it, Igor! The western countries and US are rallying round the Ukraine and

giving them arms, rockets and financial help. That's why I didn't have any money, they

are blocking our banks from doing business and we can't sell our goods abroad. Haven't

you been watching the news?"

Igor suddenly realises he has been lied to and listens intently to what Ivan says...

The End...?

What's this "they must be deported back to their home countries". I you were in their shoes would you like to be sent home to become fertilizer in Ukraine. This statement lacks empathy.

They have broken one of the 6 cardinal sins that obligate the new deportation quickly quickly. It isn't about being in the shoes of the victim, else we might have long delaying arbitration.

I actually agree though, chucking someone out, who is not a tourist, but living here or retired here should be considered with compassion.

Thailand and Russia have good relations.

It's standard default in all countries to deport back to home countries.

There are paths to exceptions in some countries but I wouldn't expect that here.

Of course that's horrible in these and many other cases.

No mention of work permits or visas here and, so pole dancing and hotel appearances do not require a work permit, for males or females

How many Russians work as pole dancers on WS? Two, maybe three? It's not like Russian draft dodgers are flooding WS. The flip side of male pole dancing is pile driving and not many are skilled at both.

I don't know about male pole dancers, but it is possible for Russian and Ukrainian women to get entertainment visas as dancers in go go bars. When I lived in Pattaya, three Ukranian women who danced in WS Russian go go stayed in an apartment in my building. I got to know one of them in both the Biblical and social sense of the word. She told me they had entertainers' visas that had been arranged through a "rich Thai" who was a part owner in the go go bar.

So in summary, we now have Russians and other eastern Europeans dancing at these places on Walking Street (female and male), and from another article Indians are taking over ownership of the clubs - and increasingly are the customers. Work permits? Nominee businesses?

If he offered escort services in ruski army he could probably make a lot more money.Ruski generals are waiting for you ,pretty boys.

Same with Thai army. At one camp (maybe moe than one) cute/hot several (perhaps 2 to 10) young Thai no rank soldiers wait at a coffee shop just inside the camp gates. They're waiting for Thai senior officers / officers to come into the cofee shop and 'make a purchase'. Seems there's also short time rooms attached to the coffee shop.

I know two young soldiers who sat around all day doing nothing in this camp waiting for early evening and often got picked up. It seems one young man was very popular and got many 'customers' and big tips, ultimately was given a new luxury car from a very snr officer who then expected the boy to be available whenever he wished.

The other boy tells stories of being hired (with 1 or several young buddies) to walk naked for several hours around a very high ranking single officers house and to do jerk and cum shows, apparently often enough many high ranking officers making up the audience.

Some years back I owned a big condo near the city in Bkk. A very high ranking Thai navy officer had a big unit (many bedrooms) in same condo. He often affived home with 4 or 5 very young sailors, telling the lobby staff and others they were coming to clean his unit.

One young sailor was his favorite, he told my Thai son the 'visitng cleaners were all there to screw the senior officer and to do nude boy-boy oral sex shows for the big guys pleasure.

The twist is that the snr. Navy officer was married to a very demanding Thai lady, she lived on the floor below but often came to her husbands unit, insisted that all the boys present strip and parade nude and she would then select a boy to be sent immediately to her unit below to shower and to remove all his pubic and underarm hair because she loved total smooth young men.

It happens.

Slight difference between a "tourist" being sent home to become fertilizer in Ukraine and a "retiree" deported to his country where, if in the West, the state will look after him.
