BANGKOK: -- Chulalongkorn University (CU) on Wednesday (Sept 6) issued a statement to clarify its decision to remove student activist Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal as the president of student council of the university over his improper conduct during the oath-taking ceremony of first-year students held on the campus on Aug 3.

The clarification was in response to widespread criticism in the local and foreign media against the university’s decision to take disciplinary action against Mr Netiwit and three other members of the CU student council.

The CU assured that it had adhered to the procedure and normal regulation in its consideration of the disciplinary actions toward Mr Netiwit and three other students.

Chula should be demoted heavily down the international rankings, then.

You wanna call yourself a university then act like one. Same can be said about many universities in the west, too.

University is supposed to teach us to think for ourselves. Have our own opinions and thoughts and respect the fact that other people are allowed to have theirs too. This is what debates are for. Let the best ideas win.

Once you stop people from speaking and debating you create a monster just waiting to gain momentum and be unleashed. Suppressing feelings and ideas isn't natural or healthy.

" and this belief and traditional practice has been inherited from generation to generation."

It's easy to get ourselves into a rut and probably not even understand why we do what what we do. We just do it just because we've always done it. And God help anyone who tries to take issue with us.

Sure we can have our traditions but they should never be a burden that must be carried into the future.

CU: "You need to listen to Satya Nadella  if you ever want to become a world class university: 'Our industry does not respect tradition. It only respects innovation.' "

Your right Rki, especially third year is when your critical thinking becomes more serious.

Unfortunately suppressing feelings is a cultural norm in a lot of Thai's thinking. Its not encouraged. You are supposed to smile and say sweet things. Being direct is seen as being ugly.

But good on the young man for stepping up.

So sad, this is the future for Thailand.
" On 14 August 2017, Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, President of Chulalongkorn University’s student council, posted on his Facebook account [Netiwit Ntw] an email from Noam Chomsky. Chomsky wrote to express his hopes that the persecution against the activist will soon end so he can continue his mission to promote democracy.  "
Chulalongkorn University should be proud of having students such as Mr Netiwit and his fellow council members who care for the plight of ordinary people.
