Police have called for the public to show sympathy for a girl who was allegedly gang-raped several times last year.

“As you follow news, members of media and the public should sympathise and empathise with the girl,” Phang Nga’s police chief Pol Maj General Boontawee Toraksa said Thursday.

He said police were in the process of gathering evidence to seek arrest warrants for the suspected rapists.

“If you have evidence or information useful for the investigation, please come forward,” Boontawee said.

The alleged victim, now 15, is reportedly traumatised and emotionally fragile. The sexual crimes against her allegedly took place in a small village in Phang Nga’s Takua Thung district.

A 17-year-old girl who identified her as another victim has denied being sexually assaulted.

The older girl’s testimony has led to speculation that the rape claim might have been fabricated.

Arunroj Sudenson, an imam at the village where the crimes allegedly took place, said officials should determine if the girl’s mother and stepfather had abused or manipulated the child.

Justice or it will never stop as long as thy no there is no punishment for this cowardly and heinous crime.

The victim will no undoubtedly be blamed as a willing participant, the usual ploy in these cases.

We are talking about a Child who was taken advantage of. It is a crime, it appears that the process requires the Child victim to degrade her self in public to get justice. Again she is a minor and protected under the laws. Where are the Child Protection NGO's when needed. No one seems to care.

The poor girl will need a lot more than sympathy. She, and her family, have taken on a bunch of influential locals - they will need physical protection, or even move out of the community - a lot easier said than done.

I hope the girl gets justice that was withheld from her before.

Sympathy? I wonder if justice for the victim has crossed their small minds!

Or, in the case of a fabricated story by the alleged victim, what about sympathy for the accused, alleged, perpetrators?

The girls' story is rather strange.

I think we can foresee the outcome here "influential figures involved" story must have been dreamed up by the young girl, nothing happened, must be lies, no case to answer! Next.........

Do you really believe the family fabricates a story like this against a

whole village which is their home. The other families are not talking because they don't want repercussions.

Strange.... not really.... the Salem witch hunts were strange, with lots of executed innocents, given the main accuser recanted her testimony some 12 years later

improbable perhaps.... but it's also likely that the number of 40 is overinflated, as the girl may have counted incidents rather than identities, bringing the issue back towards probable.

anyway... one persons idea of "strange", may differ from others.... for me, calling for community (or wider) sympathy and empathy, is strange.... it should be automatic in such a small community ( of course the elephant in the room, is that it's hard to be sympathetic towards a girl you have just gang raped)
