5 signs of Cambodia’s ‘descent into outright dictatorship’

IT’S a week since independent newspaper The Cambodia Daily closed its doors. It’s swan-song was a final front page that defiantly read, “Descent Into Outright Dictatorship,” in a stark warning of what the future may hold for the country.

Threatened with legal action over a disputed US$6.3 million tax bill, The Daily was left with little choice but to shut shop, bringing an end to more than 24 years of independent journalism. The pressure from the authorities has left people fearing for the freedom of the press in Cambodia and forced them to contemplate the reality of the newspaper’s parting headline.

Since losing ground to the opposition in June’s local elections, Prime Minister Hun Sen appears to be getting increasingly paranoid that the tide of public opinion is turning against his own Cambodia People’s Party (CPP). As a result, he has implemented a crackdown on dissent and appears reluctant to relinquish the power that he has held for 32 years.

these dictators would rather die then loose power, they always end up as incurable megalomaniacs, I hope this guy dies soon because its the only way out of this situation

Mr phycokiller, these dictators live long lives they don't die that is the problem. Just look through the lists, Mao Tze Tung 90 years old, Marcos (philippines) 70 years old, Suharto (indonesia) 82 years old, Lee kuan Yew (singapore) 90 years old. Pol pot (cambodia) 85 years old.

God send them to torture you if they die young then who is going to torture you?

South East Asian countries will always have their leaders abuse their authority, as they lack a significant minority of the population possessing moral courage and self-discipline. This means there is no effective opposing force to the abuse of state power and state and non-governmental institutions always remain weak and ineffective in comparison to the personal power of the head of state. Result : Dictatorship

well, Qaddafi & Saddam weren't smart enough, they wanted to offend "Uncle Sam" but they didn't do their maths.

Saddam didn't even know that years back US already had plan to get rid of him.
