Buddhist organisation objects to ‘Fight of God’ video game featuring warring deities

A Buddhist organisation has called for a gaming company to stop selling a street fighter-styled game titled “Fight of God”, in which depictions of Jesus and Buddha battle each other, saying the game engendered misunderstanding and entailed disrespectful acts in regards to Buddhist symbols.

Withdrawing the game would not only prevent disrespectful acts towards religious symbols but also raise humanity’s sense of self-respect, according to a letter sent by the Knowing Buddha Organisation, a non-profit organisation in Thailand, to the Taiwanese developer of the game, Digital Crafter.

In “Fight of God”, deities from different world religions battle each other, including Jesus fighting Buddha and Zeus taking on the Viking god Odin.

Digital Crafter developed the game in partnership with the UK publisher Pqube.

A trailer for the game states “The son of God is back, and he’s cross” and “Your prayers have been answered”.

Manat Chareekote, of the Knowing Buddha Organisation, described his group as a Thai non-profit agency seeking to protect Buddhist symbols from being subjected to disrespect by spreading knowledge about the proper treatment of Buddha images and statues. The organisation’s website is knowingbuddha.org.

In the letter to the gaming company, Manat said the Buddha image had been wrongfully appropriated in the game. “It desperately saddens us to see the image of our respected father used in such a role in the game like this. It really breaks Buddhists’ hearts all around the world. How could you and your team hurt and offend others’ beliefs?”

Religious and historical images were meant to be respected, he said, adding that it was inappropriate to use them for entertainment or commercial purposes.

Manat also said Digital Crafter’s goal was to entertain people, but the game instead spread a misunderstanding about Buddhism. “This game, on the other hand, spreads disrespect and disparages Buddha for millions of people in various countries. Should the game be supported?”

His organisation proceeded to request that Digital Crafter cease selling the game in every country where it was distributed.

Malaysian authorities have also said the game degraded religions and religious leaders. The country blocked the digital platform that it was being distributed on, but access was eventually restored after the platform disabled access to the game.

I looked it up. They didn't have the cajones to put Muhammad in there.

So the game which basically mocks people's beliefs, is made by cowards who, like the Islamists only attack those who won't fight back.

If they were equal opportunity offenders they may have had an argument against censorship.

Muhammad blew himself up accidentally during the opening video.

Oh, when people get offended. Makes them feel all poweful like they're part of some special and privileged group.

The greatest trick religion ever pulled is not making people believe in a god or the worship of ideas - it's making people believe you can't question it. Can't sit down like adults and ask questions that they don't have answers for.

"If there is no god or next life, then what's in it for me?"

It's called freedom of speech and expression. You don't have the right to not be offended. You telling me you're offended by something is like me telling you my back hurts. Who cares?

Yes, it should be freedom of speech and ideas.

Religion is a personal choice which should always be open to debate and ridicule. If people don't like that, then prove the 'naysayers' wrong.

Watch what you say about Ridiculism and freedom of speech temples.

Why not? This is where cartoons belong. In video games. If man were truly made in Dog's image than fighting is what these confabulations should be doing. It would be the first time in human history that actual extant characteristics had been attributed to a 'deity.' Add Mohammed into the mix and let them all symbolically rip each other's throats out and free the human race from the grips of absurdity, once and for all. And don't preach to me or anyone else about tolerance. By what logic should nonsense should be condoned? It is time for the species to grow a set and deal directly with cause and effect as it has clearly been revealed through the sciences. We are not even analogous to, but rather are a cancer with the apparently useless ability to self-reflect. Instead of viewing ourselves as some sort of end-all, we ought to view ourselves accurately. The time for unearned self-aggrandizement has come to an end. We are no better than any other aggressive parasitic infection and if we are ever going to change that, it will be a monumental undertaking, akin to a leopard changing its spots.

And the genocide by the Turks in Armenia, etc? The precedent of telling people what they can say and think is the reason we have Donald Trump. Let people speak. Sunlight is the best disinfectant to good ideas coming out and bad ideas being ridiculed.

Don't confuse inciting hatred with people having ignorant views.

Those who deny crimes against humanity generally have an agenda based in hate.

So expose them for what they are with facts and good ideas. Telling people they can't talk about something and hiding it away just manifests itself into something even uglier and more dangerous.

It's regressive and will lead other people to bring forth what they think shouldn't be allowed to be discussed or thought. An awful precedent. Religion seems to be another thing that we can't criticize of question.

Not generally, always. There can be no other excuse. Also mods, explain to me how the <deleted> do you talk about this sh*t without swearing?

Oh yes we can. And do so we must. Regardless of the consequences. We owe it to posterity. More importantly, we how it to our kids. Silence makes us consignatories.

I do agree to expose them.

However I also do believe that hate speech is not a right.

It's not the freedom of speech because if the game included Mohammed it would be banned from being sold.

Freedom of speech is the right to say as you please (without inciting hatred, etc) Just cos you include one fictional character, doesn't mean you have to include another.
