Are people who use smart phones smarter?

Quite frankly, you don't actually sound very tech savvy, if you find that is not easy to achieve.

Do you do data recovery, have you run a hospital computer department, repaired hardware, designed websites from scratch etc etc.

I still contend "having a smart phone" does NOT make you or anyone else smarter.

What it does is makes access to information easier, nothing more.

Also I have not had to be smuggled anywhere thanks, as that would make me an illegal immigrant...

It seems obvious that your computer is much smarter than you...

It seems the brain starts to show changes, albeit subtle ones, after just weeks. The scientists believe that the findings of their study indicate that the brain has the ability to reshape and rewire itself influenced by daily activities, such as the use of personal digital technology.
Smartphone users exhibit the same brain development as musicians.

Repetitive tasks and finger movements stimulate the brain.

recent studies have found that heavy smartphone users have increased cortical activities

https://qz.com/363691/using-a-smartphone-may-make-you-smarter/

According to my favorite science source, Bill Nye the Science Guy, smart phones can actually make you smarter, because they help free up memory you'd normally use for mundane information, so you can use it for something else.

4. Smartphones might be improving our nonverbal reasoning. According to a recent study by Psychology Today, smartphones might be playing a role in increasing the overall IQ of our society. The increase stems from the improvement in our nonverbal reasoning skills, which can be attributed to the way our brains process information from our smartphones and other technology.

Quite frankly you strike me as a tradesman with little formal education and not really qualified to judge my technical or  any other capabilities.

They don't need to spend money to call or text me, if you hadn't noticed it comes as part of a mobile contract. What is your point Bill?

Retired now thanks.

First, in Thailand, most of the girls  are on PAYG, so text messages and phone calls cost money. Being smart, they have smartphones using the free wi-fi of wherever they work. If they have any package likely to be a data package eg AIS 89 baht a week so that they can use Line app and other social media outside of the workplace. Ask a girl for her phone number: No hab. Ask her for Line ID: OK.

So normal these days where arguments between expats are resolved by the one with the smartphone looking up the issue in dispute, while the dumb dumb phone user sits there like a useless lemon.

And very telling when the very people claiming to be 'smart' are the ones that resort to rudeness, insults and name calling to prove their point.

AIS and DTAC cost money.  I guess you don't live in Thailand.  My wife gets upset when I use a paid SMS instead of Messenger or LINE.

Allow me to express my opinion.  The question, "Is it raining."  Valid answer, "Of course it's raining you idiot, look outside."  Non valid answer, "You don't have enough sense to know if it's raining."  You see the difference.  Both are insults but only one is on topic.

I don't remember what year the elephants disappeared from Pattaya and surrounding areas.  Not more than four years ago because I remember walking my dog and her seeing her first elephant.   I used to rent one to cruise down a soi with bars.  It was an impressive entrance.

BTW, it's illegal to have elephants in the city.

Either you are indeed very clever and are deliberately flaming ( which is against forum rules ), or your machine is making you think insults are a substitute for reasonable dialogue.

I stand by my earlier claim. You're a troll. Not here for meaningful discussion, you're here to wind people up.

That was not written to you.  Why would you change the meaning of the quote by cutting it?  It was a response to a smart phone tech illiterate whom I asked to solve a simple problem (listen to a TV broadcast in Thailand in both English and Thai at the same time).  He didn't know how and he insulted me instead by writing, " Quite frankly, you don't actually sound very tech savvy, if you find that is not easy to achieve."  I would have told him how to do it as it comes in handy if you have a Thai family and want them to listen in Thai while you listen in English (especially documentaries as it is good education for a history starved country like Thailand).

I get that a lot.  You know the kind of guy who says "the question is too stupid for me to respond to" because he doesn't know the answer.

You wrote, " Ever tried being an anonymous troll on the internet making a crap load of claims that can't be proven or disproven? " Could you explain to me why that should not be construed as an insult not contributing to meaningful discussion and an attempt to wind me up?

Participating in a meaningful discussion is exactly what I was trying to do until you indicated that your mind is completely closed on the subject and then called anyone who is anti-tech a 'nutter'. The other guy backing you up said anyone using a dumb phone is 'dumb'. With those points I realized a meaningful conversation with you isn't really possible. I disagree with your point of view, but still try to have an open mind. Never say never. Some day life without a smart phone might become too complicated and I'll be forced to get one to travel or collect my pension. In that case I'll use it as needed but I won't worship it.

I already explained it in the above post. You are the one that started way back with the insults and snide remarks towards anyone that disagrees with you. You've lost all credibility in my book to continue trying to discuss anything with your closed mind. Enjoy your blog, it will be the perfect platform for you to praise yourself and worship your smart phone.

My definition of anti tech nutter was a person who said any technology will eventually go out of control and become harmful (or close to that).  That's nutty.  In this world we simply cannot dismiss all technology.  It's impossible and nutty.  Was not you btw.

A friend of mine here in Thailand who speaks next-to-no Thai was communicating with his Thai girlfriend who spoke next-to-no English using Google Translate and LINE (?) on their smart phones. He sent her a message that she had to be more patient with him. She sent back a worried message to him wanting to know why he was in the hospital (as a patient).

My wife is the only one in the family with a smartphone. The rest of us are happy with a mobile. The grandmother does not own a phone as she has trained relatives to do such.

Who is smart?

Since I'm a retired guy I don't do anything that's not fun.  That's why I moved to Thailand.  My smartphone use is at least 60% for pure unadulterated entertainment and sex - so I'd say your wife is the smart one.

I use a phone to read books.  I have a girlfriend who uses her phone to make money (she is a model and gets paid for letting people watch her on her smartphone).

My phone is always on and I watch my house, kids and dog.

So while you watch the house, kids and dog on the phone your girlfriend is online modeling for all the porno watchers getting click revenue generated from some perverts.

Sounds intelligent, I guess that pays for the wide screen TV, rent and your toys etc???

But sounds as illegal as you status wherever you live having been smuggled in.

You say you are retired, but you seem to be a mental juvenile...

So you have free wi-fi ? Pray tell how you get that...

You live here legally now and not in a nanny state.

Are you really in Thailand or Cloud Cuckoo Land?

Wife or girlfriend: "I have a girlfriend who uses her phone to make money (she is a model and gets paid for letting people watch her on her smartphone)".

It is hardly surprising that a dumb dumb phone user doesn't know how to get free wi-fi notwithstanding their touch of the vapours.

Smartphone used for sex? That sounds kinky but I guess it takes all kinds.

Okay, explain.

I will forever be grateful oh mighty intellect...

Any free wi-fi signal available for a laptop is equally available for a smartphone. Examples might include your apartment, restaurant, cafe, gymnasium, massage shop and so on. One of the joys of life for many is attending to their smartphone communications while having a foot massage. Look inside any massage shop window and you will see.

You really have lived a sheltered life. Phone sex in the UK and the US on dumb phones and land line has been around for years.

I guess so. Per Woody Allen:

“Don't knock masturbation. It's sex with someone you love.”
