Shirtless Farangs

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Why do so many Farangs walk and ride about shirtless off the beach areas?  Okay, if you  are lucky enough to look like Adonis on a good day then maybe you have some justification and pride in your own body ( although I would save it for the beach and pool)  but the ones I  inevitably see are old, fat and  look ridiculous. I saw one in  SCG yesterday and  another two in Tesco the day before.  I could hear the Thais talking about them and  their appearance in the most derogatory terms.  I just dont get it.

On these forums many times i have read about guys not getting "respect" from Thais ,well i have never been disrespected ,overcharged ,asked for a bribe (well once by a cop in BKK) and my wife and i always seem to be treated with curtesy .

but then we both dress quite nicely and speak politely .

i reckon if you walk into Tesco in a pair of shorts with your belly hanging out and with a very young girl in a pair of shorts showing her bum cheeks ,its not only Thailand where you will be laughed at or be spoken about in derogatory  terms .

Equally as bad are the ones walk with an open bottle of beer... :coffee1:

Because they are devoid of decency & respect for the culture and the people of that culture....

Odds are good these people would represent themselves badly/cluelessly/carelessly anywhere....

It sad when they dress worse than the Thais + stick out like sore thumbs....Makes all of us look bad....

Still, I object to characterizing any human being as "quality" or not, based on what they wear in the tropics on holiday.  While I'm appalled at the appearance of some of the nicest, most generous people I know, it's easy to separate the person from their quirks.

They may have different standards of dress than I do, but that doesn't make them less than me, or anyone else walking the planet.

Maybe we should be  challenging them and saying something ourselves.  But I guess all we would get is abuse, or worse.

Folk on holiday probably dress the same here as any other holiday destination where it maybe the norm.

A holiday guy won't give a toss at what the locals think because they know nothing about how LOS folk think, but for sure if one is talking about the sex pot areas the locals there don't give a toss because they are used to it day in day out..

Ok - which one do you take off to swim? Must be the long pants? So, you swim in a collared shirt and socks?

No, clothing does not necessarily make for class of an individual, but I think wearing a shirt in public places is surely considerate of others who might not want to look at the the mole on their back while eating dinner... irregardless of having a good build or not.

I could ask, why do Thais in my soi walk around shirtless? They even go into 7-Eleven. So Ok they are local and only 100m or so from their houses.

But i doubt they leave the soi shirtless so same should apply to tourists . On the beach or 100m away in nearest 7-Eleven OK. But downtown in Tesco supermarket, NO. But then Walmart gets all sorts of weirdos.

Much the same can be said about walking around in BKK wearing a "wife-beater shirt, shorts and rubber thong shoes. It is after all the capital city.

Why frustrate yourself so?  Thailand is almost heaven for us in the IBTC.

I'm a sucker for pretty eyes, which is another perk of living in Thailand...

At home around the house and land I wear cargo shorts but no shirt as it is where I live and I dress as I please here.

If however I go out, even to my neighbour I wear a button up shirt and shorts again. If I am going to Immigration I usually wear a button up shirt and long trousers.

The few times I wear shoes instead of sandals is when I go to funerals.

I don't think I am going out on a limb here to say that you prefer to see the big boobs on a woman, more so than on a man...

On a rare visit to Jomtien, I was sitting in a restaurant, across from the Gulf, enjoying my view of the gently rolling surf, when a shirtless fellow with a hairy back and large moles, sat in between me and my view of the sea... it did not help my appetite...

Well yeh, unfortunately when guys get older they perhaps do not look like Arnie, so it is just the way us humans end up and should deal with that fact...Perhaps forget about the folk on tele and films but what most actually end up looking like...:stoner:

The worst is these skinny 50ish western guys dressing like they are 30 with some damn awful "prison style" tattoos. Not the ones you see on bikers/tv shows but the amateur tats their cell mates must have done for them. Cargo shorts reebok classics that must be 10 years old and some scrawny looking t-shirt. Reminds me of a painter and decorators garb minus the paint. Walking around a shopping mall like they don't know they look like a complete tramp.

Simple principles of time and gravity - what happens after the air bag inflates.... shoulders can become boobs and chests sink into the stomach... and for that I say, thank god for oversized tee shirts, everyone should have one.

I've been in with a group of Thais when shirtless farangs are about...

Many times they're pointed out with much laughter....At other times they are more discrete (if the farang is in hearing range)....

I don't think these people realize just how bad they really look + are a subject of ridicule....

Especially in a society where looks are everything....

Love it critics and fashion police on TV. So bored you must critique

A. Peoples dress or appearance

B. Act all superior and self righteous

Double standards abound on here is so funny.

"Walking round Tesco's with no top on with a bird half your age in arse crack shorts" is terrible.

"Walking round Tesco's in long sleved shirt and Long Trousers with a bird half your age wearing non arse crack shorts" is somehow very accetable. 55555.

Who gives a toss what others wear its all  about choices our own choices no <deleted> elses.

looking very good mate.  You dont look bad either

It's all a bit of common sense...I always wear cotton Tee's around the house....Day shirts during the day, & casual(+) as needed for the evenings....

Why? I could go shirtless around the house - but, it's hot here & I sweat.....

I don't want to leave a sweat footprint everywhere I sit - that will soil in over a period of time/repeats.....

I also do not  want to caught up in the wallow of somebody else's unsanitary "sweat footprint".....

If you look at most of the people that walk around that way hygiene is definitely not very high priority on their schedule....

We can't walk around bubble wrapped, but we can be a little more conscientious & courteous toward our fellow men & people in general....

Yeah, but at least put a shirt on.

At home i use i suppose what would be classed as a sarong in western eye's. Typical village mens dress at home. And a t shirt.

If i have to go out i subsitute sarong for shorts. I shower usualy 3 times a day. If someone is coming to visit i dress accordingly. But never  formal dressing. When out and about shirt short sleeved and cargo type shorts and flip flops. The only reason i dont go shirtless at home is quite simple i am of the age were gravity has taken its toll not fat by any strech of the imagination but not a healthy ripped 20 to 40 year old. Mind im passed the stage of caring what others might think anyway.
