Windows 10 Update to 1709

My PC just updated to the latest Creators Fall Edition tonight, anyone else had theirs do the same? Took about 20 minutes, 5 restarts and it knocked out my Nvidia graphics driver and replaced it with an WHQL driver. It hasn't scrubbed any programs as far as I can see, and seems to be working. Nothing new shows up immediately apart from an annoying icon at the bottom of my Taskbar that says "PEOPLE" despite me having turned all of that junk off in my preferences a long time ago. ( I just found out you can turn it off , it appears on the taskbar but is neither the People App,  it has something like " Turn Off People Icon. - After turning it off I have lost virtually all of my taskbar program icons, so this is not a good start!)

I am going to run a few things like Edge, X-Plane Word and some of the more familiar programs, see what happens eh!

Anyone find anything interesting? - It is currently downloading on my laptop at the minute and is driving the fans crazy, the laptop sounds like it is about to fly out the window.

After 2 more restarts both of which I did, it now seems to have all of the icons back on my desktop pc and actually looks OK. The laptop is a different matter, it is taking about 2 minutes to boot instead of 15 seconds, the fans are howling like the Hounds of the Baskervilles, but it still looks like it is doing something - A new Edge page to welcome us to the Fall Creators Update.....Mmmm this looks fun!

Hasn't hit either of my Win 10 computers yet...I'm still running 1703...and on one of them I forced an update check a few minutes ago....came back saying no updates...checked again that I was still on 1703.

A person can force the update to 1709 vs waiting on it to show-up and show-up at a bad time.  Just go to this Microsoft webpage click the little button to get things going.  I'll probably click the little button tomorrow when I have time to do the upgrade, but first I'm during an image backup of my two computer just in case the update to 1709 goes south and a rollback can't be done...I'll just reload my image backup.

But so far all the major Win 10 updates over the last year or two on my two Lenovo laptops have went without drama.  Knock on wood...hoping I don't experience any drama.

It wasn't available this morning, but now it is. One PC has already downloaded all the setup files and is installing it. The other PC and my notebook I'm writing with, are both downloading the setup files. You can get them when you press on "check for updates".

The good part is that you'll be asked when you want the setup, even when all files have been downloaded already.

I haven't heard bad things yet and hope that it's an easy part to go back, should something not work out.

When the download is complete, something pops up on the right lower side and asks you when you want it to install.

It's cool, because I had some issues with my weather application, showing that The Trial would be expired"!

I hope that this threat will be open a long time, as there seem to be quite a few cool changes. One Drive is different and much faster to access, and many other goodies. Let's hope that all drivers can be replaced, even on older machines.

  Best of luck !!

Just check on updates and you can download it. It took hours for my PC, but that might be because I've got plenty of programs installed. Altogether a 110 GB file to backup.

All in all a great first sight. An easy to handle porno website filter, unfortunately, not lockable with a password.

My PC is way faster, you can create a 8GB memory stick as your 'recovery drive", what I'm currently installing.

If that's all the information to fix problems and start the PC with it, really a great job. But I'll still make my Macrium copy to be sure.

The taskbar shows two people and you can add your friends that you can reach them pretty fast, still have to figure that out.

All programs seem to work well, but I do see a higher memory usage that would perhaps make a 2GB, or 3Gb machine very slow. Please

The One Drive Folder is much easier to handle and opens immediately.

"Groove Music" has changed a lot and it's quite nice to sample your favorite music here.

My two accounts, one a guest account, work perfectly. I hope that you've got the same positive experience and wish you a lot of fun !!

Here's some interesting stuff on how to download and how to do a clean install and many other things to consider before you're doing the update.

All in all a lovely job, Microsoft.

I forced the update to 1709 by using the MS link I gave in my earlier post.  Forced it on my secondary Lenovo laptop with i5 CPU, 8GB RAM, and 500GB SSD.   I have an AIS Fibre 200Mb speed internet plan.   I watched the process fairly close and jotted down the major processes and start-finish time of each major update process.  But before I began the update I did an image backup just in case things don't go well.

9:53pm: Downloaded the little install file/program from the MS website by clicking the Update Now icon at the website

9:53pm: Clicked on the little install program downloaded which started the download process of the big update file(s)...don't know how large.

9:58pm: Download of big update file completed

9:58pm: Verification of file completed

9:58pm: Started "Getting Update Ready" process.   This process took a while...going up to 75% was a steady pace....but from the 75% to 86% of the process it went really slow... and then from 86% to 100% it went quickly.   I hate it where a portion of a process like the 75% to 86% portion goes so slow...starts you sweating a little.

10:34pm:  Getting Update Ready process completed and the Rebooting starts...it will reboot 3 times.  1st reboot goes up to 30% and then begins the 2nd reboot that goes up to 75%...then the 3rd reboot goes up to 100%.

10:45pm:  3rd Reboot completed and we are into the final few minutes where big text banner/short statements appear on the display saying such things as this portion will "Take a Few Minutes"

10:49pm:  Final process is done and it opens Edge to offer to show you some of the new stuff in 1709.

So, for me the update to 1709 took 56 minutes.  I spent about 10 minutes opening up and briefly using different program such as Word, Outlook, Chrome, Edge, IE, and a couple of other programs.....they all worked.

Tomorrow I will force the update to my other laptop.  Snaphot from my computer saying I'm now running 1709.

Completed a new system image about 4 hours ago in anticipation of 1709. I got the 1703 patch update yesterday, but no sign of 1709 yet, and I'm on the Windows Insider Program Fast Ring.

Woody Leonhard's website had a couple of entries on it

It is known that all Razer laptop systems are incompatible with Windows 10 Version 1709 Build 16299.15 that is rolling out today. DO NOT UPDATE. Razer has not updated compatibility with their drivers to support this version of windows and it renders the trackpad, keyboard, and USB features useless when waking from sleep mode on battery power.

...

Did EVERYBODY with Win10 update enabled get Fall Creators Update today?

I’m hearing from a lot of people who were upgraded automatically. Today.

Scary, if it’s more than a handful.

I may need to put together an article on “What to do if you were unexpectedly pushed into 1709″

One thing that has changed for the worse on my PC is now the mouse cursor no longer "Auto hides" when playing VLC movies!

I lost all of my taskbar icons until I did yet another restart.

Nothing else seems adversely affected though, but I haven't really seen any benefits either.

Strangely, Microsoft decided to download it and as it was processing the 1709 version, it located another update for Defender for 1703 and proceeded to download and install that.

My update completed yesterday, and I love it already! Also, I started using Edge about 6 months ago and now prefer it to any other browser. Fast and more secure than Chrome, Firefox, Safari or the old dinosaur IE. After many years it seems that Microsoft Windows is heading in the right direction.

And tomorrow has arrived...did a forced 1709 update of my 2nd Lenovo laptop this morning...it's an i7 CPU, 8GB RAM, 500GB SSD.   I'm an an AIS Fibre 200Mb speed plan.

Total time to download/install the update was 56 minutes...started download 8:15am...8 minutes later the download is done at 8:23am and the update/install process starts....all done at 9:11am....as mentioned total time 56 minutes.

The total upgrade time was identical to to my other Lenovo laptop I did last night  which was an i5 CPU, 8GB RAM, 500GB SSD computer which also took 56 minutes.

I've played with my programs since the update to 1709...they all work.   The update this morning on my second laptop went smooth like on my first laptop last night.  Your results may vary.

I didn't have any problem with the 1709 update but I also didn't notice any changes.

Sent from my SM-J710F using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app

A lot of “ under the radar “ changes, here are some you might use .

I didn't have any problems with 1709 except it says the app to link your phone is not available in Thailand.

It might be a great idea to chabge the coun try settings before you update. Also, some other programs do not work when you've chosen Thailand as your country.

I'm really happy with 2 PC's now but will wait with the upgrade of my notebook.

The taskbar has a nice extension, where you can sign into Skype, your preferred email provider, etc..

The 3 D paint seems to be a good idea and a lot of other great stuff. Considering that all my programs, including, Nitro, MS Office 2016, Kaspersky Anti Virus, and many others are working well shows that MS has done a good job.

The phone app is in google play on your phone so no real possibility of changing it.  I'm assuming it works fine on the PC but don't know because will not handle a phone connection in Thailand.  Worthless to me as my 3 main phone numbers are all in Thailand.

My system was only running for two days, then the complications started. Even on the first day, I could see the system freezing for a few seconds that could be stopped by pressing Ctrl. Alt Del to get to the Task Manager.

Last night then the bigger issues, the start menu didn't work and when I booted up today, more freezing in and other bs.

I've then decided to use my Macrium Image I'd made right after the update when all worked well. But I couldn't get the restore running and wasted  a lot of time.

Another issue is the MS promised "go back to the last version of 10" that didn't work. A message saying that it's not possible was all I could achieve.

If I were you, I'd wait a few weeks until they've sorted out all bugs.

I got the latest update and all.went smooth. Only problem I have is Edge opens answer closes in.seconds.

After a Google search there appears to be a number of people with the same problem. Haven't found a suitable fix yet but will keep looking.

I'm back on 1703 after plenty of blue screens. Even after I went back to my former great working 1703, I've experienced the screen of death a few times.

But the promised MS program to roll back didn't work, thanks to Macrium.

It keeps on hanging, freezing in and I'm not happy about the update.

The version 1709 on the other hand, runs good on my older Lemel PC with much less memory, and a slower processor.
