Win 10 Home New Key? (volume activation will expire...)

Recommended Posts

Posted

Just got a new (used 5 month old) HP laptop.

Beofer I took it I checked that Windows 10 Home was activated and was updated, which it was, it says windows is activated using your oranisations activation service.

But if I check from command prompt using slmgr /xpr it says volume activation will expire 8/12/2017

Never seen this before, should I be doing something about it before I install to much or is it not an issue. (Win 10 keys are cheaply available form ebay).

Thanks,

  1.  Press Windows key + X.
  2. Click Command Prompt(admin)
  3. Now type the following command and then hit enter
  4. slmgr -rearm
  5. Restart the computer.

Try slmgr /xpr again to see if the issue is fixed

PLEASE for everyones sake, let us know if it works..

O dear thats done it...

at command prompt typed slmgr /rearm (not slmgr -rearm). could not reach it with windows X, but windows power shell (admin), cmd.

Got a message to restart for changes to take effect.

Restarted and checked activation with slmgr /xpr as before and it said windows is in notification mode

Checked in activation and it is now not activated, "we can't activate windows on this device as we can't connect your organsisations server".

Ok a few minutes later and it has changed back to windows is activated using your organisations activation service.

Checked again with slmgr /xpr and its back to windows core edition: volume activation will expire 08/12/2017

So back to how it was when I started.

I'm just trying to work out what will happen when it reaches that date, and if I shoud be doing anyhting now before I load this new computer.

I did call microsoft earlier (Thai toll free number forwarded to Vietnam) terrible line took almost an hour to get anywhere. They did not seem to know what will happen when this date comes, they said my copy is not really illegal but not the correct key for home use.

So could I just buy one of those ebay keys and update the activation key, without having to reinstall anything again?

Thanks.

I have no idea why you chose not to follow my suggestion slmgr -rearm and chose instead slmgr /rearm To my knowledge the command you have chosen to use CAN NOT WORK.

FURTHER: -rearm (No space between the "dash" & rearm is vital.

There is no point in me commenting further, this will be my last post.

Sorry, I just thought you had just typed it wrong as I saw it written as slmgr /rearm elsewhere and it accepted that command, if it did not accept that command I would have tried slmgr -rearm. Thanks I will give it a try.

Tried again using slmgr -rearm, it seemed to work the same as slmgr /rearm

slmgr /xpr again showed "windows in notification mode", and upon checking activation it showed "we can not activate windows...".

Left it a few minutes and then its back to the original "windows is activated using your organisations activation service." and in slmgr /xpr it shows "windows core edition: volume activation will expire 08/12/2017"

Thanks anyway.

You should have listened to the very knowledgeable user who gave you the answer already. No idea why you decided to type in a different command.

Please perform the steps mentioned below and see if it helps.

a: Press Windows key + X.

b: Then click Command Prompt(admin)

c: Now type the following command and then hit enter

slmgr -rearm

d: Now restart the computer.

Please report back if it worked.  And do it as the Admin !!

See post above. (yes performed steps as admin,  neither of my Win 10 pcs show Command Prompt using Windows X, so I used Windows Powershell (admin), then cmd, then slmgr -rearm).

No idea why you can't get to Command Prompt? If the Windows- X doesn't work, type it at the search box, then right click run as Admin.

If that doesn't work ( please try it twice, buy a W 10 key your choice and upgrade your machine. Here are the steps you have to follow and you will see how to upgrade.

Just read this "build 1703 you may find that Command Prompt is missing from the context menu when you press WIN + X shortcut keys. Microsoft has replaced it with PowerShell, "

Its the same on both my Win 10 pcs,  the old pcs Pro veriosn and new pcs Home editions.

Thanks, I will try it again tomorrow to be sure.

There is a  product key/change product key option when I look in activation, will I just be able to put in a new key without having to reinstall Windows (ebay / amazon have them for sale mostly oem). I guess the other option is to use a new key that updates to Windows Pro, but don't think I really need it so easier if I can just change the key without installing anything new.

What does typing  slmgr /dli  reveal?

image.png.753c6bdfffae65e893e5eee7afdcd745.png

Slmgr stands for Software License Manager. Slmgr/dll ( display the current license information of Windows with activation status and last 5 characters of partial product key)

Slmgr dlv reveals a lot more information, see photo

P.S. The second is from mine

When I asked you to post the full model number of the machine on your other thread, you didn't even bother to reply.

Would have been easy to ascertain as to whether Windows 10 was pre-installed. By the looks of it, the answer is no.

It looks like the usual Thai style hack. In this case KMS activation(used in schools and businesses, not for individuals) which usually needs reactivating every 180 days. Rearming won't help, so don't waste your time. They will just use a KMS emulator to activate the machine and leave you with the problems you are facing now.

Buy your own licence and run a clean install of the OS.

Win10_1709_English_x64.iso   Download and save within twenty four hours.

That is the English US version.

https://notebookspec.com/notebook/7506-HP-15-ba005ax.html No looks like no pre installed copy of windows, my last 2 new laptops didn't either the shop put on a copy, but when I check on old laptop it says The machine is permanenty activated, no expiry date like this new one.

Can I check somehow, look for an activator or something on the machine? If I do nothing will this hacked version just reactivate automatically on the 08/12/2017 expiry date?

If I do this won't I lose the other software on the machine. (What if I did an updgrade instead from the installed Win 10 Home to Win Pro, many sellers have an activation key that claims to do that).

Thanks for advice.

(PS Will try slmgr /dli & slmgr /dll and report back result later).

Your problem (one of your problems) is that your machine appears to be running using a VLK (Volume Limited Key). Unless you actually work for a company or, the computer has come from a company, this is a good heads up that your OS has been cracked/activated using 3rd party software. I don't think you will be able to change to a retail key without a reinstall, but I could be wrong.

I think the same would be applicable to any upgrading but again, could be wrong.

Spoke with the seller of the used laptop, sure they were also unaware of this expiry date as I would have been if I didn't come across slmgr /xpr.

They got it from a large chain of computer retailers (not sure I'm allowed to mention name), paid an extra 500b to have the OS installed. Not sure its any help but will try to contact them to see what they say.

Also waiting response from a couple of online Win 10 Pro key sellers to see if their keys will allow me to upgrade this Home version I have without a new install.

Thanks that interesting.

That key he is using in the video is the same one that my old Win 10 Pro laptop is using which was a free microsoft upgrade. He does say near the end this does not activate your windows Pro you will still need a Win 10 Pro key, but his screen is showing Windows is activated. Have I misunderstood something?

If something fails or goes wrong will I be able to go back to how I am now, with Win 10 Home?

Regarding the Powershell or Command prompt selections which appear when right clicking on the Windows icon, Win 10 now defaults to showing the Powershell commands in the menu...but you can change it back to show the Command Prompt and Command Prompt (Admin) by just turning off a certain Taskbar settings.  See circled area in image below.  With the circled selection turned off the Command Prompt selections replace the Powershell selections in the Windows menu.

Nope, it will change all and upgrade to pro only,. You won't be able to get back to your current system.

Almost two years ago now I bought two Win 10 Pro licenses off Ebay for around 10 to 15 USD each.  Used one license to upgrade my already installed Win 10 Home to Win 10 Pro.  I just entered the Win Pro license number in the Win 10 Activate Change Product Key area....after about 5 minutes as Windows did it thing the upgrade was finished.

Used the other license to do a clean install on my second computer I had just bought.  Both installed just fine...and remain activated to date.  When using some of the various slmgr commands to get info on the licenses the command say the licenses were "retail channel" versions and are "permanently" activated....none of this Volume activation key/KMS/activation will end on date XYZ" crap.

Thanks, Yes it sounds like the way to go, very cheap Win 10 Pro keys on ebay  (I guess they are all the same, but not all say multilanguage).  So changing the key will hopefully just update from Home to Pro and then show permanently activated.

I'm waiting to hear if any of the sellers reply back, if they don't by tomorrow I will just give it a try anyway.

Posted

When I bought the first key it was specifically for updating Win 10 Home to the Pro version.  I asked the seller before buying would the license work OK for that, or did I have to do a clean install to get the license to activate.  The  seller didn't know for sure because the instructions he provided with the license was to do a clean install.

But hey, I figured I'm only spending around 10USD for the license....if it don't work to upgrade the Home to Pro version by just entering the new license number I will just use the license to do a clean install on the another computer I was getting ready to buy.   When it worked by simply entering the new key, I emailed the seller back and told him as info only...that way he would have the answer for the next potential customer who asks the same question.

HOWEVER, BUT, just because it worked for me, I'm not saying it will work for everyone due to all the license/region variations of Windows.

The install was performed by an idiot.

Why someone would use an RTM Home key for the install before using the KMS system for activation, I have no idea.

The should have utilised the correct key for the KMS;

Windows 10 Professional = W269N-WFGWX-YVC9B-4J6C9-T83GX

It is not some secret key, nor is the key used on your system;

Windows 10 Home  = TX9XD-98N7V-6WMQ6-BX7FG-H8Q99

These are keys used in the initial installation set-up. i.e. Some installation images will contain both Home and Professional. For the install, you enter a generic key in order for the install to continue with either Home or Professional, dependent on the key you enter. The keys do not work for activation, only for the install. Then you can enter your activation key or utilise the KeyManagementService for activation.

So for the time being you can enter the KMS key above to install the correct edition. It should upgrade without affecting your files

Then you can renew the KMS activation until your new key arrives.

That will give him 90 days to activate, am I right?

No. If you renew the KMS activation, 180 days.

You perhaps are confusing it with the Windows 10 Enterprise evaluation.

Posted

You can also change the edition to Enterprise and it's evaluation version. The Enterprise version will work even without being activated. You'll just be prompted to do so at a point.
