My thai wife has a 1 year fixed term deposit with Bangkok Bank (branch MBK) which is due shortly. Since she is staying in Europe with me, she called the bank and asked them how she could cancel the deposit and have it transferred to her local account in Europe.

The bank employee told her that it could only be done by herself at the branch. For her to fly to bangkok just to cancel this deposit seems like an expensive pain in the youknowwhat...

Anyone know if there is another way to do it???

Thanks!

Going through the same thing right now with Bangkok Bank. Moving money out of Thailand is not that straight forward. You must have a financial reason to move more than $20kUSD backed up by hard documentation and forms filled out and delivered by your wife in person. Bangkok Bank said the same thing to us, she had to be there. However, they then went on to tell us there are a couple of options. One is to give power of attorney to a family member in Thailand through an attorney and that family member can get the money transferred (as long as you have provided hard documentation that the money is needed overseas to finance a business, child's education, and such). Second, have the money roll out of the fixed deposit and into one of your personal accounts that has a VISA card on it and pull up to $4000USD a day out (costs something like 400 baht each time) of it until the amount has been pulled out (we are looking to do this one). You can not even e-bank the money out without the same forms being filled out and given in person (so much for e-banking :-] ) LOL

My wife has only 120.000 baht in the fixed term account!
