The saddest thing is cons and scams are part of everyday life here and looks to be in the nature, Just remember the so call lawyer a few weeks ago ripping off a young female who was in a wheelchair due to an accident a few years earlier.

I think that's a very sweeping statement. I have rented the same flat from a Thai family for 7 years, and last year when I became unemployed for 6 months, they cut my rent by 50 percent, and when I got another job and offered to pay it back, they refused the money, and told me not to worry about it, just to start paying the full amount again.  You can't tar an entire people with the same brush. 

Bet they don't get that in Turkey!

So the Thai calculators are  10% to 40% wrong.

But in Thailand 40% is still called an acceptable tolerance.

I spoke to the wife about this and she had heard about it .it seems they still did the run and locals helped out with food and water for the runners as some had come a long way to compete. She said when she does local ones many of the people come from other parts of Thailand.

Never ever pay for anything online in Thailand......you run a huge risk of being scammed...at least 95% of the time in my view. The Thai human body contains a "scam gene"...it triggers at the sight of money

It’s in the world news forum. 

 

This forum however is about thailand. 

How would the so called organizers give back the money?  I guess it could be possible they could refund charges on credit cards if those were used, but is it that easy to do that with credit cards from other countries?  Did they take checks (doubtful being Thailand).  Paypal? 

 

Anyway, just another example of how one should raise an eyebrow when paying for anything in advance in Thailand, especially any large amounts.

Yeah.  I agree.  They probably had good intentions at the start and then decided that it might mean a lot of work and planning for them.  Suddenly this avenue was easier once the money was in hand, they found the people due to arrive and nothing organised yet.  Greed and lack of planning are not necessarily exclusively Thai traits,  but perhaps they are not as scrupulous about delivering value  promised after money paid, as some other places.   PS  BTW my wife sells and health life insurance so we have some experience in this.  Get cancer, THEN ask for a health policy, and be surprised when they decline. Everyone's  time wasted.
