webfact Posted November 13, 2017 Share Posted November 13, 2017 Government asks retailers to slash prices By The Nation The Internal Trade Department has organized a meeting with the country’s biggest retailers to try to persuade them to cut some of their prices by up to 80 per cent. The department’s director general, Boonyarit Kalayanamitr, said he had invited representative of manufacturers, retailers, department stores and super stores with more than 13,500 outlets to a meeting with him on Monday afternoon. He said he would seek their cooperation in reducing prices on more than 10,000 consumer goods items by 20-80 per cent in order to boost people’s spending. The aim, he said, was to link this new initiative with the government's “shop for the country” project that is running from November 11 to December 3. The project allows taxpayers to claim rebates on their personal income tax, provided they keep their shopping receipts with the Value Added Tax amounts listed on them. Boonyarit said he expected the overall shopping project to boost spending by Bt30 billion nationwide. With household debt at an alltime high and no end in site this is the best they can come with? Non performing loans AKA bad loans are in a similar situation. But the Government wants the Thai people to go out and shop till they drop and dam the consequences??? Oh please oh please Mr. Businessperson lower your prices, it will be good for the Thai economy and save us a loss of face by being able to tout how much the people have spent. As I don't think it is considered that the retailers will sell at a loss, it becomes clear that this is pure greed and rip off, if a business would be able to reduce prices with 80% and still make a profit. Bears no relationship to the individual business's needs to clear stock but is determined by the amount of discount the suppliers will allow. And the shops that always have 70-80% off sale signs up give me a laugh, as well as this "SHOCK PRICE!" nonsense. Yeah, shocking alright! 555! Typically just wait until the next trip to the US to refresh the wardrobe, accessories and electronics. Most malls are good for Arab customers, that is going to be terrible soon, since Saudi Royals are cracking down corrupt people. What about Tom-Yam/ any other popular dishes sold for 250-300 Baht at big malls ? Better keep away from big malls, they big polluters, and looters. Similar stuff can be bought for 1/5 of the price somewhere outside, or order online. Better keep the money at bank, buy 199 stuff for your use. Spent money will never return back. Jump! and they won't jump because their action is determined by market forces and confidence (or lack of) in the economy. This is the problem when you have someone who is so incompetent running the show. Sound economic policies, strong confidence in the economy are what they are looking for.
