Why should they not be allowed, they also have a right to live their lives ?...

A bunch of puritain politicians seem to be blocking the issue for years, making Australia is one of the few developped nations where same sex marriage is not legalised. But the Australian people seem smarter and more open then their governance, as the polls show the results.

Come on!!!

Aussies would vote for cyanide in school lunches if they thought they could get their two bobs worth in.

Well done Australia.

Doing what your politicians are too cowardly (and I’m being very generous in my word choice here) to do.

What did they do?  I have never seen something so orchestrated since the last Australia vs USA cricket match.

Anything that’s not explicitly illegal, is legal. For example, on the roads, there are only “stop” signs, and no “don’t stop” signs. Strangely, this notion doesn’t always apply when it comes to equal rights for minorities.

The notion that the majority can decide what rights  a minority should enjoy is fundamentally flawed.

Once the following are established:

Consensual adult marriage is a right

Consensual adult sex is a right

Sexual orientation is natural and not illegal

Then

What two consenting adults of whatever sexual orientation decide to do that other adults are legally allowed to do as a matter of course, should not be subject to majority approval.

In light of current enlightenment, they should automatically have the rights everyone else has and relevant laws (such as regarding joint taxation, spousal benefits, etc) should simply be updated as a matter of course.

In Australia all those rights have been in place for some years.

The current argument has essentially been about the MEANING of the WORD marriage. Which of course is pretty stupid since the REALITY of marriage has changed several times during our lifetimes - with the provision of reliable contraception from the 50s, women's lib & work rights from the 70s, fault-free divorce from the 70s ... Nothing eternal or God-given about it!

Great day for Australia!

My fondest best wishes to all my lovely Oz friends here and back in Australia! Let hope legislation follows swiftly.

With Love from David,  CM LGBT Group Leader.

I personally think that going by way of non binding vote was a politically savvy move because it offers a mandate. Those of a religious ilk are, and will be, the main opposition and will use the most absurd arguments... most of which this poll has undermined. Good move, very clever because Australia must now legalize same sax marriage and they must do it pretty quickly.

It hasn't happened yet......that was a non binding poll. Wait until the religious nutters get into it. Its a given the let will support it in Parliament....they support anything that destroys national cohesion the world over.

That's not a nice thing to say. In fact it is rather offensive to Australians, Tasmanians and the concerned  communities. I'm sure that the Ausssies are wise enough to make the right choices.

The vote is in.

The intolerant and bigoted lost.

By Christmas equality will be achieved.

Well done Australia.

Err mate I am Australian and in their Greenie fueled urge to legislate same sex marriage Tasmania did f888ck it up. They passed a law allowing any adult to have consensual sexual relations. Clear as mud......get it on with mum or dad or granny if you are over 18 and roll that way.    Most of us real aussies know they have been doing that for years...hahaha. I think they revised the legislation subsequently.

If 'we' allow two consenting adults of the same sex to get married then it will obviously lead to non consensual marriage? Slippery slope logical fallacy.
