The Netherlands' world-famous dike system is facing an unexpected threat as an intense European drought dries out the peat foundations that help keep the country's flood barriers stable. While rivers across the continent shrink to record lows, Dutch authorities are racing to detect weaknesses before cracks become a serious flood risk. The prolonged dry spell is already disrupting shipping, damaging agriculture and exposing the growing challenge of managing water in one of Europe's lowest-lying countries. Dike Patrols Hunt for Hidden Weaknesses Teams of inspectors and volunteers are now carrying out regular patrols along Dutch dikes, searching for signs that drought has weakened the embankments. Armed with metal probes and digital mapping tools, they are identifying potential leaks and sending real-time reports for repairs. Peter van Duijvendijk, a flood defence manager with the Schieland en de Krimpenerwaard water authority, said 140 volunteers monitor around 100 kilometres of dikes. Although no major failures have been detected so far, officials remain on high alert. The concern centres on peat, a material used in many inland dikes that must remain moist to retain its strength. As the ground dries, the peat shrinks and weakens, increasing the risk that water could eventually penetrate the barrier. Rhine Crisis Spreads Across Europe The drought is also crippling Europe's waterways. Water levels on the Rhine have fallen below previous records in Cologne, forcing cargo vessels to slash loads to avoid running aground. Port operators warn ships that normally carry up to 2,500 tonnes of freight can now transport only a fraction of that amount, creating severe disruption across supply chains. Elsewhere, sections of the Waal River have dried so extensively that houseboats are resting on exposed riverbeds. Farmers Face Mounting Pressure The impact is spreading well beyond transport. Dutch authorities have restricted irrigation in some areas as freshwater supplies tighten, leaving fruit growers bracing for smaller harvests and rising costs. Growers describe the season as exceptionally difficult, while western parts of the country are also battling increasing soil salinity as drought allows saltwater to encroach on fertile farmland. Race to Adapt Before the Next Crisis Scientists say the Netherlands does not lack water overall but struggles to retain enough through the summer after rapidly draining excess rainfall during winter. Researchers are now studying ways to transform landscapes into natural water "sponges" by slowing runoff and improving groundwater storage.
