The Online Culture

So increasingly I'm becoming convinced  that the concept of online chat, TVF for example is a source for evil

What is it with the keyboard warriors, typing behind the anonymity of that keyboard that seems too unleash venom, that I'm sure in their real life they would never dream of.

Case(s) in point. There is a certain online journalist (starts with an A and ends with an M), whose work I actually like for the most part, subject to the wrath of lese majeste, who it appears when you dare to offer, what I thought was constructive critism of some of his more extreme anti Thai comments , results in a barrage of insults. Blocked on FB, you go for it Dude

On the other side, I recently made, what I thought was  pretty positive post regarding taking my wife to the US, yet happened to mention some somewhat negative Thailand thoughts, albeit few, some barstool keyboard stud to respond in shall we say a less than positive way.

These people don't know you, they have no insight into your life yet seem to think they are free to insult you in a way, that if you did it in person would be totally inappropriate.

Strange times we live in

Well OK but then you have to question why someone with more than half a brain moves to South Dakota and you did not say why you chose to relocate to South Dakota.

And Yes, here we go, trolling begins.

You guys can't help yourself

So next time you want to post a nice comment about your wife -- which it was -- why don't you leave out the gratuitous BS about how now you are among persons with more than half a brain functioning on your wavelength of preference.

Anonimity can both be bliss or curse. My 17 psychiatrists told me, that the harsher the comments on an anonymus Forum, the more "civil" (even timid) the authors are in real live.
- The reason OP has moved to South Dakota? Compared to North Dakota, South Dakota is pure exitement!
Cheers.

On line communication manifests itself in many different ways . evil being one of them but in many others positive ways.

Right now I am at NYC on a project, wife is on route to BKK , my daughter is at our Florida home, my sister in Italy , my brother in Greece, and god knows where you are, and I am talking with all of you online.

How wonderful is that?  sometimes we might not like the message but such reaction is simply subjective, and before we attack the messenger let's look at the message and our part in it.

Communications online also have some challenges. Face to face communication happens at many different levels, body posture , voice tone, facial expressions etc. etc.  Online  and in a forum you are limited to the written word and care must be taken to stay on message any peripheral issues you open only stand to derail your primary intent.

You are a litle bent because of the reaction you got concerning comment regarding Thai intelligence and yours, For the most part it was a good post only when you decided to veer a little bit on a tangent  that you partly derailed your Thead.

Accept responsibility for your part in this. Learn a lesson and move forward.

Think about this . Your wife is Thai, if you have children. your children will be half Thai.

When you belittle Thais you  are inadvertently belittling your wife and children if you had any.

You might not have thought about it that way, but we did, and even if we did not consciously  think about it  that way, at a guttural level we did not appreciate it.

So don't be surprised if some don't react kindly to you . Apologise for your mistake and move forward.
