Yes I know we are each preaching to the converted, sometimes I try to think what would be needed to fix the problem as Thailand isn’t the only country with corrupt  and incompetent police Australia has had its share in the past, but then I think it falls in the category of mission impossible and despite being an optimist I give up !!

I don’t really blame the Thai people because human nature being what it is they do it because they can I remember that a lot of people in Australia for example used to drink and drive until it was made a criminal offence with huge fines etc and sadly some still drink and drive

Its an embedded culture that is difficult to understand for falangs because we approach it with our knowledge and experiences of how it should be done . Somewhere recently I read that Thailand does not want to be like the western world with rigid enforcement's  despite the facts and stats . I cannot explain it for you but we are amidst an alien nation with a different mind set to our own often based on superstition , luck and  " what will be will be attitude " . We cannot help those who do not want help and we live here with  . Frustrating as it is and as long as you can understand that this place aint going to change some time soon  ,  take off our western hats , keep a low profile and accept that this is the way of life here , other wise it will drive you crazy

  • I used a pedestrian crossing this morning on Beach Road and everything, including motorbikes, a coach and a baht bus, stopped when the light turned red. I was pleasantly surprised.

what i never understand, is why not having a drivers license, or failing to register the verhicle or not having an insurance,  does not result in the confiscation of the vehicle.   They just

Thanks for those comments don’t worry I don’t think about it too often I learned a few years ago to go with the flow.

The other side to the topic is that sometimes I think in the West we have become too regulated a comment made by others who have visited here, certainly Australia has in my opinion become a Nanny State

It is perfectly fine for me that the police put the prices up, but there are some things I would like them introduced so it is enforced everywhere in Thailand.

1 /
Cleaning all traffic lights. This should apply to everything in Thailand.
As well as road repairs and roadblocks and others. All road signs are visible from trees and shrubs. The police receive a lot of millions of Thai baht at national level, so it is also true that this money should go to ???

2 /
Rules introduced will also apply throughout Thailand. The fact that you can do something in a city does not apply to others.
It is better that traffic laws apply everywhere and in all of Thailand.
In Surin and the surrounding area, there are no rules that are in Bangkok - Pattaya, etc.
I would like the police to focus more on this area.
:sorry:

They'll have a field day with the helmet laws if enforced. How many are bumbling around at home because they didn't want to mess their hair up?

Cheap cheap.

Red light in Socal USA, 15,000 b.

Reckless maybe 30,000 b.

Running the red the light just laughable Yesterday traffic all stop at red light waiting Just watched in awe as 3 bikes 2 cars just went straight through red light Me me me cant wait attitude Where are the keystone boys? No where to be seen  That is Thailand problem THE POLICE  It is there no1  problem and if they did something about it the road toll will come down You can have plan 777, 111, 666 any plan number you want but if one minister had the balls to get out of his office and said ok we are going to reform the keystone cops by recruiting police trainers from overseas and then make the police actually do there job i make a prediction in 10 years the road deaths would halve Its is called changing the culture of Thai drivers But in ten time the road deaths will 40,000

At a thousand baht a pop for running a red light....there is an astonishing amount of money to be made by the police.... millions daily, if they do it properly of course!

Is this the real official fines list or the somewhat unofficial bribes list?

Not being cynical, but I would suggest the latter.

How would you set a fine that would be appropriate (and an effective deterrent) for both a Thai billionaire, and a Thai farmer making 300 baht a day without taking income into consideration?

You can't.

In UK, the fine for driving over the limit is 1.5 times your weekly income. Wonder what Ant, or was it Dec, got fined.

As most of us know, when buying a car in many countries, it must be insured before the keys are handed over.  However, in Thailand, such thinking is redundant and counterproductive to the well being of the new owner as they appear to believe it is their right to drive not a privilege.  Insure the vehicle before getting the keys and maybe, just maybe, but doubtfully, things may improve, if only minimally.

Except that you must be insured in Tailand. That's the road traffic act cover.

Now whether you consider that is sufficient or not the car must have it yois register.
