Bangkok Infrastructure Faulted

Bangkok airport infrastructure is deficient, having failed to expand fast enough to cope with staggering traffic demand.

 

Bangkok is one of eight cities highlighted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for aviation infrastructure shortcomings.

 

IATA director-general Alexandre De Juniac has taken governments to task for not doing enough to meet aviation infrastructure needs, calling for greater urgency to ensure infrastructure matches demand.

When successive governments, legitimate and otherwise, haven't had enough time or interest to make airport expansion planning on the table, it's not really surprising. Really disappointing that the current occupants of the big house are hell-bent on farcical high-speed passenger rail building while ignoring the lamentable state of affairs where upwards of 80% of domestic freight is shifted by road.

 

Meanwhile, Singapore Changi can already handle almost twice as much as Bangkok's expansion alone is planned to handle. They also have the vision to make their new T5 expansion equal to the whole of the existing T1, T2, T3 and T4. This is all based on passenger figures that Bangkok simply can't comprehend because there's just too many 000,000,000's for their fingers and toes.

It is surprising since Suvarnabhumi Airport expansion has been planned since 2011(hardly what I'd called successive governments) to an annual capacity of 65 million passengers.  https://centreforaviation.com/news/aot-plans-for-bangkok-suvarnabhumi-airport-expansion-118195

Since then the expansion has been on track with the exception of the third runway. I believe the plan for the third runway and a satellite international terminal (aka third phase expansion?) will meet the 60 million annual passenger load and air traffic congestion issues. Haven't seen any start date for these infrastructures. But what "aviation infrastructure shortcomings" means is not identified.

What is apparent is that the junta government has now given funding priority to high speed rail service throughout Thailand instead of completing major airport expansion.

? and just yesterday I was reading a posters comments about how great the junta was regards infrastructure development.

 

oh well... that was yesterday... I wonder what tomorrow will bring.
