Japan submits study on high speed train project to Thailand

Japan has recommended Thailand construct the first 380-kilometre section of the 672km Thai-Japanese high-speed train route, says Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith.

 

Japan has finished the feasibility study of the first 380-kilometre section of the 672-kilometre Thai-Japanese high speed train route and the Japanese Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Mr Takao Makino submitted submitted the study to Mr Arkhom on Dec 14.

 

Mr Arkhom said the first section is from Bangkok to Phitsanulok, covering a total distance of 380 kilometres with an investment cost of 280 billion baht.

 

The study along with investment recommendation will be forwarded to the cabinet for approval in three months.

 

He said that the 380-km route would be split up to shorter distance of 50-100 kilometre sections so that construction could be started early.

 

He expected that the ministry could issue bidding conditions or TOR (terms of references) by the end of next year.

Japan politely excusing themselves for the first section?

Japan don't believe Bangkok is going to benefit from the investment, or can even afford it.

 

Meanwhile, the Chinese high speed.......zzz

means they recommend thailand as a country begin construction.

I wonder how many of millions-of-passengers-per-year it would take, to justify the capital-investment in the Japanese-designed Bangkok-to-Phitsanulok high-speed passenger-only railway ? :whistling:

 

P'lok must have grown somewhat, since I was last there, twenty or so years ago? :wink:

Not sure who exactly will be paying 1,100 THB for a trip between Bangkok (exact terminus TBD) and Phitsanulok? Shades of the SARL Express Line.

 

One assumes there will be a somewhat limited schedule, so depending on your schedule it might be faster to walk.

 

There are not enough amulets in creation to get me on that train, assuming it's completed by what, 2030? Heck, they might even hold elections before that.

The "other" newspaper quoted the official that the cost for the entire route - Bangkok/Chiang Mai - would be slightly more than 1000 baht.

"investment in the high speed route would be in the joint venture pattern with breakeven point in 50 years." 

What is Japan's ownership share of the 280 billion baht project and is the Thai government borrowing funds from Japan to finance its own interest in the project?

There seems to be minimal transparency for this project financing.

Even though the feasibility study has just been submitted, according to unmentionable publication the environmental impact assessment has already been approved.

Suspicious timing.

I don't recall any public disclosure of the impact assessment nor any public hearings - at least mentioned in TV.

Suspicious rush.

I wouldn't speculate too much on this. The timing of tender is one year, whats supposed to happen in Thailand in one year.?

 

The Tendering will also be a closed door for Japanese company MHI Mitsubishi Heavy Industries experts in the Shinkansen slab track system. MHI use their own sub-contractor Fujita

I suspect that MC would be Mor-Chit  (Northern bus-terminal & BTS-line)  while  DMK is well-known as the airport-code for Bangkok (Don Muang) International Airport ?

 

Work on extending the BTS is currently well-underway on extending the BTS through to Don Muang.

By my reckoning, this will give the country six different totally incompatible rail systems in and radiating from Bangkok

BTS, MRT and Airport Link, which could be described as suburban lines, and the present metre gauge system, the Chinese High Speed line to Nong Khai and beyond, and the Japanese High Speed  route to Phitsanulok and eventually Chiang Mai.

Mind you, they've been planning a branch line to Chiang Rai from the existing Chiang Mai line since the 1930s...
