Britain's Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to marry on May 19

Britain's Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle will marry on May 19, Kensington Palace said in a statement. Jacob Greaves reports.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Prince Harry and his American fiancée, Meghan Markle, will marry on Saturday May 19, his office Kensington Palace said on Friday.

Queen Elizabeth's grandson, fifth-in-line to the throne, and Markle, who stars in the U.S. TV legal drama "Suits", announced their engagement last month with the marriage to take place in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.

"His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle will marry on 19th May 2018," Kensington Palace said in a statement.

The couple said they had chosen to marry in Windsor, west of London, because it was "a special place for them", having spent time there regularly since they met in July 2016 after being introduced through a mutual friend.

Harry's 91-year-old grandmother, Elizabeth, will attend the ceremony. However, the date they have chosen clashes with English soccer's FA Cup Final which is usually attended by Harry's elder brother Prince William who, as President of the Football Association, awards the trophy to the winners.

"The couple of course want the day to be a special, celebratory moment for their friends and family," Harry's Communications Secretary Jason Knauf said last month.

"They also want the day to be shaped so as to allow members of the public to feel part of the celebrations too and are currently working through ideas for how this might be achieved."

The wedding is likely to attract huge attention across the world, as did the marriage of William to his wife Kate in 2011 which was watched by an estimated two billion people.

The royal family have said they will pay for the core aspects of the wedding, such as the church service and reception.

Markle, 36, who attended a Catholic school as a child but identifies as a Protestant, will be baptised and confirmed into the Church of England before the wedding.

She intends to become a British citizen, though she will retain her U.S. citizenship while she goes through the process.

The Gothic St George's Chapel is located in the grounds of Windsor Castle, which has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1,000 years. Within the chapel are the tombs of ten sovereigns, including Henry VIII and his third wife Jane Seymour, and Charles I.

On Wednesday, Kensington Palace announced Markle would join the queen and other senior Windsors for their family Christmas celebrations at her Sandringham estate in eastern England in what commentators said was a break with royal protocol under which such an invitation would normally only be extended to Markle after the wedding.

Good 'ole Harry, always thinking of the serfs.

Despite the TV coverage of the wedding likely being massive, there's alternative viewing, the FA Cup final, which will be infinitely more interesting.

Strange to make it clash with a truly national occasion. I know what I'll be watching.

Crossy when have the Windsors ever thought about the serfs?

Answer never, we are important, you serfs dont matter to us.

Thanks for letting me know when NOT to go to Britain. All the hotels will no doubt be booked out for months before as the adoring royalistas go over to have the privilege of standing for hours just to have the opportunity of seeing the couple et al drive past. I can see the news reports now "she waved at me and her dress was sooooooo lovely"

Of course, not to be missed will be the follow up stories of her pregnancies and babies. The other one is probably happy not to have to produce any more just to keep the media ratings up.

guess harvey spector will be at the wedding...lol

And what exactly is Harry's claim to fame? Working hard to get born into the royal family? His b-grade appearance? At least she got somewhere in an insanely competitive industry? I think it say all we need to know about your view of women that it's the wrong half of the couple that you chose to discredit.

Persona non grata ...

"Harry has made it clear he wants the Obamas at the wedding, so it’s causing a lot of nervousness,” a senior government official told The Sun. “Trump could react very badly if the Obamas get to a Royal wedding before he has had a chance to meet the Queen.”

Trump can come and present the FA Cup to the winners. All the royals will be in Windsor.

Not unusual for the groom and best man to sneak off to watch footie on TV.

But in this instance as they have tickets for the Royal Box I expect there to be a helicopter involved.

Nice photo of of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at Sandringham yesterday snapped on an Iphone, by a member of the public who after posting on Twitter was inundated by the press asking to use the photo, now intends the royalties to go towards her 17 year old daughters university education.

Quote

A mother has been "overwhelmed" by the response to her photograph of four smiling royals which appeared on the front of numerous national newspapers.

Karen Murdoch, of Watlington, Norfolk, captured a beaming Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Christmas Day at Sandringham.

Her image made the front pages of the Sun, Daily Mail, Mirror, Star, Daily Telegraph and Express newspapers.

Has served his country in a real live war zone .. Does a huge amount for charity particularly charities for those injured and devasted serving for their country .. And is a genuinely nice bloke .. And what has '' getting somewhere '' as you put it in reference to Meg' got to do with it .. They're a couple in love , he digs her , she digs him so what's the problem ..

LOL, thousands upon thousands of squaddies have "served their country in a real live war zone" and get no hordes of media pursuing them around the country as if they are important for that.

Good on him for supporting charities, but isn't that his job, now?

A genuinely nice bloke- all good, but all this mob hysteria just because he was born into so called "royalty" ( which is nothing other than having ancestors that happened to survive long enough to become rulers, unless one actually believes they were "anointed by god" haha ) seems a tad excessive to me.

A couple in love- apparently so, so leave them alone to get on with it, and report some real news instead; something that seems to be in short supply given the amount of attention diverted to this high society frippery from the serious problems plaguing the planet.

And interviewed his dad (Prince Charles) and Barack Obama, just can not see him not inviting the Obama's, wounder if Trump will try and gate crash the event, or maybe even order the cancellation of the Obama's passports...

Bet TV wouldn't make the same mistake if another vip was being wed.

Orf with their heads!

Reuters article. On top of that, his official name is Henry. From Wikipedia: "Prince Henry of Wales KCVO familiarly known as Prince Harry, "

"I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot;
Follow your spirit: and upon this charge,
Cry — God for Harry! England and Saint George!"

William Shakespeare's Henry V (info for the peasants)

If Harry ever gets the top job he would be Henry IX. Now that would be fun!
