PHUKET: A 31-year-old man from Khon Kaen was killed when the pickup truck he was driving slammed into a streetlamp in Kathu in the early hours of this morning (Dec 20).

The man, Amnat Sitthisuk, was pronounced dead on arrival at Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket Town after rescue workers recovered his body unconscious and unresponsive from his wrecked Khon Kaen- registered pickup, which was wrapped around a large spotlight pole on the central reservation on Phra Phuket Kaew Rd.

Capt Nipon Temsang of Kathu Police was notified of the accident at 1:30am.

Jeeze!  From the photo of that truck, he must have been flat out flying!

Yep, definitely doing some serious k's, lucky no one else copped it.

Leave it where it is as a message to others, just like the one in  Thalang the other week which is at the cop shop now. Mind you it wouldn't have an effect- just natural selection.

At least he didn't (or won't) kill anyone else.

Obviously the best way to stop idiots killing themselves in this manner would be for an actual police department to do their real job and enforce the traffic rules.

However, placing immovable objects in the divider or near the roadside is not a proactive way to reduce the road toll. Even non-speeders can lose concentration or be forced over the curb and come into contact with the concrete pillars constructed close to roads to, ironically, provide light for safety reasons.

Breakaway lamp posts, as used in the civilized world elsewhere, would save many lives here.

^^^^^ To be fair I prefer the natural selection route- he is no longer a danger to others. If he'd survived and had another crash with 20 people in the back how would that be?  Maybe a bit callous to some but if he'd hit me I would not be sitting here typing this.

The full pictures were on the rescue site- no seatbelt and looked like he broke his neck on impact. Truck was basically torn in two.
