DSI recovers nine billion baht in luxury car tax scam

BANGKOK, 3 January 2018 (NNT) – The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has retrieved about nine billion baht in import tax revenues in connection with cases involving more than 1,300 luxury cars tied to a tax-evasion scam.

The Deputy Director-General of the DSI, Pol. Lt. Col. Korawat Panpraphakorn, said his department has been working with public prosecutors to investigate the alleged evasion of tax on imported luxury cars, and proceeded through a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) to obtain foreign-based data. According to information received, there were 9,391 luxury cars from England, 505 from Italy, and five from Japan.

He said the Customs Department had calculated there was overdue tax of 3.49 billion baht on 1,047 cars from England and 5.57 billion baht on 336 cars from Italy.

Pol. Lt. Col. Korawat said the DSI would be able to recover tens of billions of baht after this investigation is concluded. He said cases against tax-avoiding importers will be submitted for prosecution, starting this month.

We're customs officers involved in this scam? If so, will they be prosecuted?

Me think that now that the correct tax was paid for those super fancy

cars, there will be many of them being unsold with the new price on them,

as for the importers and the officials who colluded in the scam, I don't many

of them going to jail, and I don't see this practice not happening again either...

I recall that there was some discussion as to how these cars were "acquired" for subsequent export to Thailand. Suggestions that they were possibly stolen or the fruits of insurance scams (which amounts to the same thing). If so, will they be returned?

If sufficient money is 'refunded' to the taxman there will be no need for criminal proceedings.

Someone is just not listening to Uncle Tu.

"Would be able to recover" and "recovers" : not same meaning.
