Does anyone know where to buy Canadian maple leaf coins in chiang mai?

Doubtful that you'll find it in Thailand other than via a private collector. Maple Leaf is .999% pure gold or 24 carat, Thai gold is only 96.5% or 22 carat.

Maple Leafs and other bullion coins would be subject to VAT and possibly an import duty. So if you are buying for the purposes of speculating on gold & silver prices, you'd probably be better off to buy Thai gold and silver.

Most Thais will not understand or appreciate the difference between 22 and 24 carat, 22 carat is less soft hence suitable for jewellery. From experience, Thai females will treat any gold they possess as a store of wealth that is to be tapped into as needed, their emotional attachment to gold jewellery is virtually zero and gifts of gold are often sold quite quickly, sometimes to trade up or down or just for cash.

Only if you will be in Thailand when you want to sell.

Its very possible to buy .999 fine bullion in both baht weights (easier) and gram bars, easy to buy and fairly tight spreads. Even easier is baht weight thai gold in small bars.

Western coins are not easy to purchase or sell.. Not recommended here.
