1TB USB Thumb Drive – Whats the catch

Featured Replies

I'm in the market for a new 1TB external hard drive just to store some photographs on and came across this -

Now Ive not really been keeping up with the USB thumb drive market  , but when I saw this 1TB version I was surprised . 1TB on a thumb drive is this correct , whats the catch ?

It might well be a fake.  A couple of years back I stupidly bought a 1 TB Sandisk USB drive at Fortune Town and it had a very small capacity (16 GB?).  Just look at the specs of that drive and the price and remember the old adage that if it sounds too good to be true....

At that price there are no doubts that it is legit, after all a 32Gb thumb drive cost more.

Likewise was interested but got put off by some of the reviews stating its a scam. Also elsewhere the largest samsung drive I could find was 128GB selling at over US$ 50.

Why pay so much ??  another from China is cheaper at only 311 baht....    https://www.lazada.co.th/keven-store/?spm=a2o4m.prod.0.0.43c454247m1hQv

only looking yesterday wanted a 16GB for the Android Box,  and another 32GB for PC........... noticed 256 GB was 2,790 baht..

Edit:  that was at the 'Advice' PC shop

or for an extra 63 baht you can get 2TB from HP!

Amazon are also showing 1TB flash drives -

1TB $14.78,    256GB $22.98,    64GB $15.99    Rather 'odd' pricing!

66% of the reviews claim they are a fraud.

They also have a Kingston 1TB Thumb drive for $885 and 2TB for $1,409!  A bit more realistic?

DO NOT BUY ! It's a scam.

I did buy a couple of these high capacity USB from Lazada. But they have only minimal capacity.

They're cleverly made. When you plug them in they show the alleged monster capacity.

The worst is that they will let you load up your files like "normal" but only the first files are really loaded.

The rest are just their names.

I did lose a great number of files before I checked and saw that they weren't there..

I didn't bother to complain. Not worth the trouble.

Tons of fake high capacity thumb flash drives for sale....they DO NOT really have the capacity advertised.  This 2013 Ebay article is a little dated in reference to the large sizes (i.e., 1TB) being advertised today, but the article is still on target in terms of how the drive sizes are faked.

As this EBay warning below says, They are low capacity drives and they hack the contrller chip to report to windows etc a higher capacity. An old usb 1-2, 64GB etc, but reports to windows that its usb3 1TB etc. Once you put more data on  than the real capacity they fail, cant read need to reformat etc, even re-formatting windows still sees it as 1TB.

Something just come to mind...I remember around two years ago a certain thumb drive which I think was being advertised as a Kingston  512GB, was being advertised by many Ebay sellers out of China.  However, when you went to the Kingston website the largest Kingston had on the market was 256GB.  (Now of course Kingston has sizes up to around 2TB)  Just another example of a fake thumb drive size being sold on Ebay...or Amazon...buyer beware.

Buying anything on Lazada I look at the seller ratings..  most of these so called '1 TB Flash drive' [+ other unbelievable cheap items] seller are from China and there rating is around 40,  whereas those normal sized Flash drives ones sold in stock in Thailand . the sellers rating is 90 something..   may indicate something ??

So, what would be the best place to buy a 1Tb drive. Not too interested in money, but more in quality and reliability.

Thanks....

Same applies to SD cards on Lazada - there's heaps of fakes, in fact possibly more fakes that legits. Lazada seems to be immune to fair trading laws (or do they not exist in Thailand?) and they definitely seem to have no interest in banning these types of vendors. Lazada is a crapshoot with a lot of types of products in general.

If ever there was a fake its Seagate. I bought a 1TB USB HDD off them last year, lasted a week, they replaced it free of charge and the replacement lasted 7 months with same failure. It did have 1TB space on it but how they are allowed to sell HDD in Thailand is beyond me.

on Lazada on the left hand side are boxes you can tick........  -Location-  I always click 'Local'  also click 'Cash on Delivery'

Why bother with Lazada and E-Bay where you don't know what you are getting and have long frustrating process trying to get things right when they go wrong.

I always use  -  http://www.invadeit.co.th/category/usb-flash-drives/ - where you know the stuff is genuine.

Invadeit is a sponsor of this forum and used by many of its members. It's a local outfit run buy a English speaking Farang that you can call and actually talk to if necessary.

They have an excellent returns policy and take payment in Thai Bhat  so no problem if you don't have a credit card.

Yep, but with Lazada I like where your can pay upon delivery. Invadeit T & C's - "Orders made by the buyer will not be dispatched unless payment is fully received and cleared."

The other problem with Lazada and stuff from China ' No Warranty '  as I said was looking for a 16 GB and a 32 GB flash drive, bought both 168 baht and 320 baht + both with 3 year warranty..  even another case 12" Fan came with 1 yr warranty.
