Going to the Thai consulate in Vientiane tomorrow for a TR visa. Any pointers to make this process as smooth and quickly as possible? Go early? Go late?

If I decide to fly there from BKK would my GF need a passport?
Your Thai gf need to bring her passport or ID card... If that's what you mean?

But I'm not sure about ID card...but that's what my company says. :)

By air she will need a passport to depart Thailand and enter Laos.

At a border crossing it is not required since she could get a border pass that would allow her to stay for 3 days.

Go late. The visa run companies will be there early tomorrow.

If he goes late it means he will get a later ticket to pick up his PP the next day, it could be 4pm before his ticket is called

OP you have a choice, get there around 6 30 am before the visa run companies arrive and get one of the first numbered tickets to pick up your PP the next day or go late and get one of the last tickets to pick up your PP the next day

FYI, they start accepting applications at 8 30 am and start to hand out PP the next day at 1 30 pm

My GF does not have a passport. Now Ubonjoe says she needs one to fly; you think Thai ID would be OK?

I think it is confusion between crossing by land or air. By air she will not even be allowed to check in for the flight without having a passport.

Enter the info here to find out what is required. https://skyteam.traveldoc.aero/#input

Click "Change Document" under "Passport Information" to see if a ID card will be accepted.

UJ is correct. There is no way your GF will be allowed to check in/board an international flight to a foreign country with just her ID card. She needs a passport for an international flight.

I don't mind going late. But if I choose late and get a late ticket, will I be sure I get my passport back the next day late afternoon?

You will definitely get your passport back the day after the application. I would get to the embassy between 10:30 and 11:00 to lodge the application just in case (very small chance) they are so busy that they are forced to turn some people away at the end of the morning. When you receive your number for the collection, ask them what time you can expect your number to be called the next day. They seem to be able to estimate this within about 15 minutes. This avoids a lot of waiting around, while still allowing you to get your passport back fairly promptly when your number is reached.
